This forum should rank in the top 99.9th percentile of all forums on the internet because of how
used we should all be at reading 7-15 varying (and tiny numbers) and reacting to them after thinking about the optimal decision when we are multitabling poker,
how are you having to take 1-2 seconds to read and type the answer?

Also: 52 but fuck this, most mass tilt inducing thing in the world to be running hot and then getting a frustrating one that takes 15 seconds and fucks everything.

The scoring algorithm must give you more points for harder calculations. I've just surely beat my personal record for the most answers, yet haven't broken the score record, cause I had been given a ton of easy ones.

EDIT: OK, it probably. I changed the setting to some super easy ones and I got 108, lol. Let's just keep them default for comparision purposes .

Really impressssed, since I can't calculate fast. It's like my brain goes in slow motion, I see a hand stop me, and go "uh uh", then I have to wait 4-5 seconds before it fires up and lets me being to do the equation.

LP are scoring pretty high but if you let random people on the streets pass this test, you would probably see many really bad scores.

I'd definitely beat Stephen Fry at this test but he's still orders of magnitudes smarter than I am.

Your arguement is totally invalid. Being extremely good at mental calculation IS a sign of intelligence. That obviously doesn't mean every smart people are extremely good at mental calculation, or that everyone who's extremely good at mental calculation are very smart people.

Agreed, 90 seems impossible. 90 Questions/120 Seconds = 1.33 Seconds Per Question.

The time to read the question and to type the answer should take around about a second. Leaves you about 1/3 of a second to figure each question out.

I am not a savant and I could probably do around 80-100. There are certain techniques, little things to do to increase your arithmetic skills.

F.E. any easy one. any 2 digit number by that number (squaring) that ends in 5. will end in -25.
then you take the second number, the one in the hundreds place, and determine the next consecutive number, then multiply.

35^2= 1225
3*4= 12 ends in 25 = 1225

85^2= 7225
8*9= 72 ends in 25= 7225

There are techniques for almost all basic arithmetic equations. I can multiply 3 digit and 4 digit numbers in my head as faster than you can calculate them using a calculator. And thats just multiplication.

some of my tricks to improve speed on this test


for big multiplications: something like 88x12. i just do 90x12=1080-2x12=1056. it does take a little bit of time and it requires im fast at the basic time tables but its easier than carrying digits and such.

for the tough subtractions: i figure out the ones digit first then estimate. so for example something that takes a bit of time like 164-96 i see ones digit is 8 and then i estimate the other and start guessing. type in 78 then 68 then 58. you get the answer at 68

for big division: i chop off a digit to estimate what its close to and then work back from there. so for example if i got 1056/12, i would chop off the 6 and do 105/6 and notice its close to 9, so i know the answer is close to 90x12 which is 1080. i know its 24 less than that so its 2x12 less than 90x12 so its 88x12.

these tricks can help make things faster but you still have to be very fast with computation to make them work because often you are doing more steps but with rounded and smaller numbers.

and in general a good technique for squared numbers comes from factoring

(x-1)^2 = x^2 - 2x + 1
(x+1)^2 = x^2 + 2x + 1


so say you have 40^2, this is 1600

41^2 = 1600 + 80 + 1 = 1681
42^2 = 1681 + 82 + 1 = 1763

it gets hard after a little while, but starting with something easy and working forwards or backwards isnt too bad

50^2 = 2500
49^2 = 2500 - 100 + 1 = 2401
48^2 = 2401 - 98 + 1 = 2304

another way to look at it is, you add up that number and the next number. so 60^2 = 3600 61^2 = 3600 + 60 + 61 = 3721


factoring in general can help you with all sorts of stuff.

i.e., say you want 46*34. notice that this is the same as (x+6)(x-6) for x = 40. this factors to x^2 - 36. so 46*34 = 1600-36 = 1564. any time you see numbers on equal sides of one number you can do this


57*23 = (40+17)(40-17) = 1600 - 289 = 1311.

it really helps if you know your square numbers up to 30. try writing them out and you will be able to do a lot with it

now you can use that factoring trick for much bigger numbers

I dont really know what you're trying to do there jubert but I find subtracting easier to do from left to right (ie. the opposite of what you're suppose to do/what they taught you at school)

9-5 = 4
0-5 = 5
So I get 35 since we cant do 0-5 therefore the 4 must be a 3

Alternatively you can just think 55+x = 90 if you're a faster adder.

Here's a decent trick.

take any two digit number (you can do it with 3 and 4 digit numbers, I 'm just not 100% sure on how to do those) that you need to square.

Everyone knows 15^2, it equals 225. But hypothetically if you only knew your times tables 0-10 it would be much harder given that you would have to carry numbers in your head (unless you do it a different way, 15*10+15*5, but who cares, you get the point).

So 15^2 = 225

Now to make it easier.

Take the number you are squaring and multiple it by 2 or add it to the same value once again

15+15=30

Now, take that number 30 and break it up to where it's easier to multiply.

20*10 = 200

You went +5, -5 from 15.

So square the difference 5^2, and add it to the 200 (the 20*10), which equals 225.
So, 15^2 = 225.
15+15 = 30
(break up 30 to digits that sum to that number) 20*10 and add the difference^2
20*10+5^2=225

Here are some example if my writing is not coherent enough for you to understand.

52+52=104= 50*54 + 2^2 =2704

36^2=1296
36+36=72 = 40*32 + 4^2=1296

When you multiple any 2 digit by 11, you add the to digits together and place in the middle of those two digits. If the addition is greater than ten, you carry the 1 to the tens place and add.

Examples:
11*22=242

2+2=4(put digit in middle), now you get 242

11*33=363
3+3=6, put in middle
363

11*67=737

Now the easy way: 6+7=13
put 3 in middle, and add 1 to the digit farthest left. In this case it's 6.

so, 6+1, 37 = 737

11*87= 957
8+7=15

put 5 in middle, add the 1 to the 8, you get 957

Why not just mutiply by 10 and add the number one more time? Seems a lot simpler. 11*22 = 220+22. 11x73= 730+73.

I disagree. For example 58*11, 5+8 is a lot easier to add than 10*58+58
