Finally got around to watching Manchester by the Sea. Damn. Just damn. What a beautiful movie. Basically flawless.

Agreed.
Also really liked Arrival but I feel like everyone has probably already seen it.

ww2 type propagandistic caricatures may occasionally work on morons but mortensen is prob the only one left in lp that could be drawn by something like that

"Manchester by the Sea" was great.

I am in need of movies but I also have some time to give back. Here are some movies Loco suggested that qualify for this thread:

2001: A Space Odyssey
Un homme qui dort
Persona
The Seventh Seal
Teorema
Stalker
3-Iron
Before Sunset
Dogville
Fargo
The Tenant
(I just thought of The Apartment)
Manchester by the Sea
Mommy
Quatre nuits d'un reveur (Four Nights of a Dreamer)
Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux (My Life to Live)
Seven Samurai
Oldboy
25th Hour
Apocalypse Now
Before Sunrise
Eyes Wide Shut
Inglorious Basterdsd
The Lobster
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Oslo, 31. august
Shawshank Redemption
The Shining
There Will Be Blood
WALL-E
Whiplash
Blue is the Warmest Color

The whole list is expansive and I have not seen a lot of the movies especially many of the foreign ones but these are ones I have seen and really enjoyed.

Ok I wont allow any more derailing from the towns idiot or any other comment related to allucinogens/politics, make a thread if you want to talk about it

Irreversible is a really great film. Part of it is I love Monica Belluci and Vincent Cassel but it is the camera work and the story. I also love Thomas Bangalter. It has parts depravity, brutality, and existential artistry. The camera work takes some getting used to but it is an interesting way to get some cool shots. The brutality there is likely no getting used to it but it is important to the film. I think I might be getting on the Gaspar Noe train. I want more cinema like that.

500 Days of Summer is pretty good. Just a nice casual watch. It does some things a bit differently that make it interesting.

Seul contre tous (I Stand Alone) is another great existential stroll with Gaspar Noe. It is about a tilty guy who has about had it with people and culture. Many humans are simply surviving. Surviving means to fight. We are all alone living in dark tunnels. Will our hero find any salvation?

Irreversible is amazing, the "rectum" scene is so claustrofobic and frantic, the sound makes all the difference, also the rape scene is so brutal and long but its important because it makes you also want revenge

Oh and if you like Memento you will love Primer if you haven't seen it.

Once Upon a Time in America is a great Epic. Make sure you watch the correct version; the theatrical release was a disaster.

A very recent movie i liked worth a watch was "Shot Caller"

Your mention of Primer reminded me of this fairly unknown (?) movie I really liked called Coherence..
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2866360/

Loved it.

Also have to recommend the very recent Korean movie Taxi Unjeon-sa (A Taxi Driver), it is really good.

Some other korean movies that are more/less known, but I would recommend:
Amsal (Assassination) - set during Japanese occupation of Korea. This is one of my favorite Korean movies ever, just super stylish with interesting characters and pretty much no dumb or boring parts.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3501416/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Busan haeng (Train to Busan) - more famous I think. Zombie movie set on a train. Not super special but solid genre flick worth watching.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5700672/?ref_=nv_sr_1
EDIT: Korean characters not showing up -.- I guess I'll romanize the titles.

I need the hookup. To feel it in my veins... in my being.

Where can I watch "I am Cuba" (1964)?

I can ask the same question for a lot of foreign films. I need my hit.

How the hell has City of God not been mentioned once in this thread... I assume everyone has seen it but there's a decent number of recommendations in here that are also 'everybody should have seen this already' movies.

I've had The Lobster sitting on my computer for quite a while and finally got around to watching it because of this thread. Enjoyed the movie quite a bit; likely Colin's best role (In Bruges is good too but he more plays himself in that)

The Intouchables is actually the only meaningful comedy which I think I've ever seen and should definitely be in the thread. The french version, as they are making a Hollywood one, which will most definitely suck balls

Also +1 City of Gods, that's supposedly based on true events, which I believe considering the things that happen in the ghettos in Brazil.

I watched Amour (2012) last night. It is a movie about life, strokes, and death and really well done. I think some people will be interested in a film like that and others just won't be. I really liked it.

What about Deathnote the tv show?

One film I am sure you all missed, but it's 10/10 in terms of a psychological message. Main theme from it:

I rewatched it after many years to see how it holds up. It's pretty good, you have to suspend your disbelief in many occasions though. At some point, + Show Spoiler +

around episode 25 I believe, the show becomes realllyyy bad and I had to stop watching soon after.

I also rewatched Monster. It's very good.

I feel like Eraserhead could be a really good watch for some people. I was in kind of a tired, crummy mood last night that didn't really jive with watching that kind of movie but there were a lot of parts that were pretty priceless. Just the whole feel of the movie. You are not going to find that in Hollywood. David Lynch was like let's make a fucking movie and he most certainly did.
