So, maybe we aren't all experts but I think most people enjoy films. I am running a bit dry on film inspiration at the moment and thought a thread could be interesting. I don't want this thread to really be favorite movie ever but more so films you think may be a bit different or unique and that you really liked.
The one that is on my mind is:
The Lobster
Memento also came to mind but that maybe a bit too popular for this thread but maybe not. Foreign films, independent films are really what I am looking for.
had to watch and rewatch memento to get it. right now, i have to rewatch it again to remember.

I highly suggest you check out some iranian filmmakers if you want something original.
Though not really an awesome film per se, Close-up (1990) by Abbas Kiarostami is really thought-provoking and it questions the movie format that one has become so used to seeing. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100234/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Synopsis:
The film tells the story of the real-life trial of a man who impersonated film-maker Mohsen Makhmalbaf, conning a family into believing they would star in his new film. It features the people involved, acting as themselves. (think about that!!!)

Cool stuff so far. I may have been a bit too stringent in my first post. It is kind of a hipster topic but if someone has a cool movie just post it who fucking cares if no one has heard about it or not. Of course I don't want mainstream bullshit. Posting Iranian movies is sweet as I would never seek that out and never come in contact with it if it were not for some connection. I am really just looking for something to look forward to and unwind when I get off of work.
I watched "The King and the Mockingbird" last night and thought it was pretty good.
The Party is kind of a goofy one. Lighthearted and made me laugh a lot.
The Elephant Man
The Great Dictator

I have been listening to some NIN lately and could go for a David Lynch so tonight it is going to be "Lost Highway." I'll let you all know what I think in a bit.

i wouldnt waste my high by watching a movie. on weed maybe, not acid.
Well I once did it and watched Fantasia 2000 and there was too much "noise" and couldnt concentrate, wasnt the best idea , perhaps a low dosage like 1/4 would be better or shrooms for a movie like that one.
Koyaanisqatsi isnt a regular movie, its just music and images

"Lost Highway" had some moments but overall it was pretty meh. I would not suggest it.
I'll have to get to some of these other movies but first I will have to figure out how the heck I am going to watch them. If it is not on iTunes or YouTube I am currently out of luck.

Which brings up another point about IMDB ratings. I would never rate "Lost Highway" a 7.6/10 but these angsty teenage nerds love the shit out of it. It's why "Fight Club" is off the charts and the "Lord of the Rings" movies. I am still pretty angsty and also nerdy in a lot of ways but I think I have grown out of my teens. "Fight Club" is a great movie that I enjoy. I don't like the "Lord of the Rings" movies. I just wanted to say something about IMDB ratings and I maybe kind of wish I just would not have gotten into it.

the lord of the rings is crap, the mythology is amazing and interesting overall but the movie is awful, cliché and for kids, like superhero movies, we are all nerds but come on, have some fucking taste

Right i'll name some movies that very few have seen but are very good.
IMO this is the best war movie ever made-or that i have seen, yet almost no one has heard of it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/ 'come and see'
Pretty interesting reading up on it, apparently the main actor was hypnotized for one scene so they wouldn't be traumitized, and they used real bullets in the shooting scenes. Utterly horrifying movie that makes schindlers list look mild in comparison, and it will make you question all hollywood war movies a bit more, even if you do already.
Recently saw http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0285861/ 'owning mahowny.' Box office flop but the acting in it is 10/10. Good movie about degen gambling, byrnesam recommended it to me about 6 years ago but i just got round to watching it now.
The human condition, a 9 hour movie made in japan in the 1950's, about a japanese socialist who gets put in charge of a japanese concentration camp in manchuria, ww2. ; he is constantly conflicted over choices between humanity, survival, and moral principles. Another very good war movie.
One of 3 non decent human beings on a site of 5 people with between 2-3 decent human beings

another good philip seymour hoffman is "before the devil knows your dead" - prob shoulda been nominated for an oscar but it was a strong year with no country and there will be blood so it was overshadowed in the genre.
of course The Master is another great PSH (and phoenix) movie.
Inside Lleweyn Davis is one of my favorite movies; I really vibe with the main character.
Hell or High Water was the best movie last year. Ben was amazing
so many others. I'll think about it

Oh and if you like Memento you will love Primer if you haven't seen it.
Once Upon a Time in America is a great Epic. Make sure you watch the correct version; the theatrical release was a disaster.
A very recent movie i liked worth a watch was "Shot Caller"
