The much anticipated kickboxing match between Team PokerStars Pros Lex “RaSZi” Veldhuis and “ElkY” Bertrand Grospellier has come to a conclusion, with Veldhuis winning the bout by knockout.
The knockout occurred in the second of five scheduled rounds. The first round, by most accounts, was nearly dead even, but the Dutch pro was able to get the better of the Frenchmen in the second round when Veldhuis kicked Grospellier in the head. “ElkY” went down with the kick and, when Grospellier failed to regain his footing immediately, Veldhuis was declared the winner by knockout.
The fight, which took place in a Marcelena, Spain bullfighting arena had a few pros, including Eugene Katchalov in attendance, who tweeted “, "Leaving Greece today and flying to Marbella, Spain to watch elkypoker fight RaSZi . Super excited as I'm sure it'll be a great match!" The match will be available for viewing at some point on Veldhuis’s website.

edit: surprised it ended in the second round. from what was said about elky training so hard, thought he definitely would have had a relatively big advantage.

After watching the fight, Elky did very well, relative to the fact that Raszi definitely has natural talent and does understand how to fight. You can see it in the rhythm and movement.
The fact that Elky takes a massive kick right at the jaw and gets up is extremely impressive on his part, I think that would have been a knock out for most of anyone else. While I think both fighters we getting tired, Raszi kept his form and Elky had expended more energy to keep up.
All in all, a great effort on Elky's part, but Raszi's skill was evident. Good job to both, it was an exciting fight. =)

Here's my take on the fight: I thought it would have gotten real ugly for Raszi in the early-middle of the fight when elky started slinging a lot if most of those strikes landed cleanly. I think he just threw a lot of awkward strikes and gassed too quickly in the process of trying to end the fight asap. Raszi's kickboxing was very sick though and when he landed that first head-kick you notice that elky went into guard then took off his guard as the kick was in motion, really unlucky lol. I thought the 14 min video that webjoker posted was very good quality for something that most would expect to have a poor video of. Good shit on the camera crew and what not. I'm too much of a pussy to ever get into MMA sparring or fighting, because I'd be so afraid of obtaining a serious injury.

one sided fight, elky had a poor fighting posture, akward footing, and poor striking(swining to slowly with to much motion) and his biggest weakness was his blocking, every strike elky landed it was on the body because raszi had his hands protecting his face effeciently.

LOL yeah he was telling me to bet all the money I had on Elky. Watching the fight now though. Haha, this looked like it must have been a blast.
After watching the vid, looks like Raszi had the edge from the start. Mad props to Elky for taking those wicked kicks like a man.

This is why I try to avoid fights. Fighting is not for everyone, training only helps very little if you don't have the proper mindset for it. Fighting is different, what you know and train for vs what you can actually do is not automatic. As you would notice, after being hit and nerdrage sets in, Elky goes batshit nuts with the girly punches (not even looking at what he's trying to hit), while Raszi sticks to his gameplan keeping the distance with jabs and kicks and just pick his spots before slowly setting up his stronger strikes. Im pretty sure Elky had a good training camp and he probably did well there, but it's so tough to think and execute while trying to avoid getting your ass kicked

Sweet fight, seemed like RaSZi had the upper hand even in the first round.
This was just crazy sick. I still can't believe this was so well executed. It wasn't some halfass fight it was a real bout. Very impressed and congrats to raszi.

imo raszi was the way better fighter in both rounds - he had the upper hand in pure technical skills and execution and as whamm said the stronger mindset for this. mad respect for elky too, he stood up AMAZINGLY fast after that first kick imo
Enjoy the game

Awesome fight. Thanks a lot for sharing it, i can definitely see how you would want to make this private.
Elky fought with a lot of heart and he did land quite a few punches, he looked really fit aswell. Raszis kicks to the legs really hurt Elky imo. It makes you lose your feet and this translates into your punches and defence aswell. Super amazed at how much beating you both took. Can you give us more inside info like which punch or kick really hurt and what went through your mind during the fight ? Elky you deserve respect. Keep your head up high. No glass jaw, real Frazier material.
The rage into respect transformation was really obvious from the video aswell. You kicked him in the face real hard, contrary to common belief i think its not easy to go in and finish him when you have a big advantage like that.
What next ? A 3h 30 min tennis match on clay ?

Yea imagine being up against someone who is so comfortable inside the ring like Anderson Silva where he can execute/time his plans to perfection. So sick how the elite strikers can do it and make it look so easy coz its really not.
I hope Idra and Huk do something similar at TL lol
After watching a lot of amateur kickbox fights at my Gym and watching a lot of people
sparring for bouts you could definitely see from the technique what was about to happen :/
I wanted ElkY to win but come on :/, those "what-are-those" strikes, his frivolous posture,
not keeping his hands up, holding Lex at every opportunity (you're not allowed to hold someone's leg in kickboxing.... ... ... not 5 times either)
not throwing a single legkick nor knee in a kickboxing match, BACKING, a TON.
You can't win when you're backing that much.
Maaad props to both of you/them for going through with this though.

i love these type of fights. while watching them i always picture myself in there. strangely enough, despite having more training elky fought more exploitively and lex fought much more by the book with tight defense in close and loosened up on the outside. perhaps it was because elky learned more boxing and MT while lex learned dutch kickboxing.
elky was bum rushing in, dropping his hands just unloading at times with more regard for offense and less regard for defense than is optimal. but if i was in there i would just get completely overwhelmed by that style by trying to fight optimally cause im terrible at it. it really can be compared to something like .5/1 NL back in 2007. if i was a horrible nit id get torn apart by a decent player who played like a reckless maniac.
very cool fight. both of you definitely picked up some good skills in your training. elky had nasty clinch work to the body and lex had really nice leg kicks, even a nice front kick, better ranged boxing and the headkicks were perfectly timed.
lex, how were you feeling physically before the first knockdown? the flurry you had in the first round definitely had elky hurt so that might have given you an extended high to not feel hurt, but you got hit with a lot of body shots and you were probably getting a little gassed by that point. how do you think you would have felt if the fight continued the way it had with no knockdowns into the 4th round?

Lex fought as i imagined he would, good technique and quite composed, Elky was worse than i thought tbh, his punches are just terribly awkward, clumsy haymakers without much weight into them landing always on Lex's guard, but it was awesome that this fight actually happened, thought it never would.

^ What type of fighting is that? (Edit, after looking at one of the tags and another video in that guys collection it seems that it's MMA in Japan, but you cant do a lot of stuff on the ground like you could in the UFC during 1996.)
I see some wrestling, judo, kicks while wearing shoes, and open hand hard slaps to the head.
There doesn't seem to be any submissions even though the guy in blue mounts Hands twice within the first 3 minutes, and Hans is able to grab the rope if he's in a bad spot like in pro wrestling/WWE.

seriously what a good video, watched it with a load of mates who have no clue about poker and no idea who either elky or raszi are and they all got well into it too! good standard but enough "amatuer adrenaline" style fighting to make it really interesting to watch!
and congrats raszi clearly deserved that win, though the guys slating elky id love to see you in the ring!

didnt watch but that sounds like either pancrase or rings. neither allowed strikes to the head, so it basically turned into a grappling match with shots to the body

im taking baal in that one.
tutz brags about his accomplishments so much, if he was something like a purple belt he would never keep that a secret. we would all know already. baal is tougher than he looks and less tough than he thinks but hes still tough enough to beat up a gymrat pretty boy. [no offense tutz ]

nah man. i think tutz will beat baal. i agree baal is tougher than tutz. but tutz is fit and looks like he can beat almost anyone here on LP if he undergoes some training.

I'm brown belt in judo (1 before black...), unfortunately judo doesnt help that much in a fight where you can throw punches and kicks unless wresling is allowed (afaik elky vs raszi fight didnt allow wresling, I didnt watch the video yet).
my weight is 180! the idea of the winner getting a full package or something like that in a spa in las vegas is great! I would go for it
edit: also it has been like 2 years since I stopped judo

judo may not help directly but being brown belt in judo is definitely a huge advantage over someone with no martial arts/fighting background at all. balance, co-ordination, toughness, strength etc
that said i have no idea if baal has any background (do you?) so hard to pick...

The bet im talking about is if you dont use an arm as you said , id just have to get some cardio back to whoop your ass.
If it were a regular fight i wouldnt do it unless it involved at least a 50k profit if i were to win, im very out of shape now and ive never fully recovered from a hell fracture i had nearly 2 years ago, but if that were the case id take 6 months to prepare, i dont have much of a background, a useless blackbelt in taekwondo as a kid, 1 year of MMA about 4 years ago and i used to hit my punching bag every day for 1h for 8 months about 2 years ago.
Anyway its unlikely the fight happens, id rather do this challenge against nanonoko, now that would be awesome

In short, Elky showed up in a bathrobe and Lex got too much action at 1-1. All those talks of injuries, dgaffing, and Elky training in Thailand for a month were a sick level.

great writeup raszi, thanks
especially liked this part
Fighting in a ring is an incredible experience. It takes a lot more than I would have thought at the start of all this. The tension and the adrenaline is like nothing I have ever felt before. You're whole body is working in overdrive and you go into survival mode. You hardly feel any pain and you can barely think. It takes a couple of fights for people to be able to think more clearly. People who tihnk everything should be clean and that training level should be equal to fighting level just have no clue what they are talking about. I don't mean to sound snobby, but if you have never done a fight, you just don't know. Everything takes over. You see in the warmup video I punch so much better technically, but in practice you're not fighting to survive.
im a regular at nl5

By the way, seems like Raszi applied his training into the fight as much as he could. He seemed a lot more composed than Elky, who just seemed to go into French Mode and throw as many punches as he could in 14 minutes like he needed to break the world record or something.
TheHuHu4 coming soon :)
