I think it's been great so far, but I'm certainly happy I've read the first book. It'd be really hard to follow otherwise I think, and as such I'd really recommend reading it before watching.
im starting to miss epic cgi creatures/spells etc. Arent there any wizards in this realm? You can't beat LOTR without these.

I'm about 30-40 pages being done from the second book and...
There is some magic / wizardry in this series and as far as creatures and shit go, not so much (I'm only on second book). Although there is a lot of alluding to mythical beasts and giants and faeries but we haven't seen them yet. And also if you remember in the first episode, Those group of dead people came back alive and they are known as white walkers.
Yeah I bought the books after watching the first episode. Almost done the 1st book now. Really excited to see what the second half of the mini-series is going to look like after the plot really starts to roll along. Having just read the book there are plenty of little spots where dialogue is mixed around or changed for the show. All and all it's pretty good though they seem to cover more or less everything. A couple of things are done in different order or at different times of day to speed up the story but that's to be expected. Checked on wikipedia and it looks like the 2nd season has already been picked up. They intend to call it Game of Thrones all the way through and just make each season. I'm trying to find out how many episodes per season. I was thinking 8 but they could easily do 12 to make sure they get all the content in.
Tagline from Wikipedia is possibly the best way I've heard the series described so far if you're trying to get a friend into it.

Somewhat slow episode, but it was expected at some point. Even True Blood season 3, which was bad ass, had a few slow episodes that were mixed in.
The preview for next week looks good.

Haven't read the book
If you haven't either, I can recommend at looking up who the characters are etc online - stuff will make more sense.

Episode was somewhat slow yet a lot of new characters were introduced which was a nice thing. Didn't expect to see Syrio so early in the season but he wasn't at all what I expected him to be, rofl. I pictured a thin short-haired / crew cut man that had the body of a fencer. Instead we see Baal with a mustache.
TheHuHu4 coming soon :)

Agree with this as its prob a lot to keep track of, I'd recommend using something like the HBO guide though
Something like wikipedia might spoil future events for viewers who haven't read the books, the HBO guide won't spoil a thing that hasn't already happened in the series
