honestly i agree with all the criticisms here, especially wrt catelyn. i feel the love between ned and cat was an extremely important part of the early part of the books, you're bombarded with all thats happening and it adds a really important human element to keep things a little grounded. i didn't really feel that here and it seemed to come from cat's end, she seemed to talk to ned more like a servant than a wife in a lot of the scenes.
never the less, it was an excellent first episode. love the actors for pretty much every single role so far except cat and maybe robert (pictured him much taller). |

I agree. I'm monstrously pissed. They better fit every single detail of a 77 chapter book that if dropped off the empire state building would knock the world off it's axis in a 13 hour series or whatever it is.
It's been one episode guys. It isn't going to be exactly like the book because it's simply impossible to due so. Whining about every single deviation is silly.
The first episode was absolutely fantastic. |

No one's whining about "every single deviation." I for one completely enjoyed and support the series. But if the casting of one of the major characters doesn't sit right with you, isn't this the time and place to whine a little bit? Not to mention, the casting has nothing to do with the length of episodes. I mean... we're all fans here, we all love this world and the story to be told. What's a little quibbling over little shit among fans? |

Just picked up the book today. Enjoying it a lot. Can already see how much more detailed the book is compared to the TV show. |

few thoughts on the books
+ Show Spoiler +
i'm in the middle of the 3rd book and am getting pretty sick of reading it tbh....
seems like the writer tries to prolong the book a lot by stalling 20 chapters extra before characters can meet with each other..
the arya escapade tilted me lol... 30 chapters waiting for her to return to her family and then bam they die the moment she arrives
how about enough of the main characters dying? u start to get to know them, like them and then bam they're dead...
is it me or does the author need to get laid more often.. every woman that appears in the book he goes with some description like
"she was the cook.. but her tits they were firm, ripe for baby sucking nipples.. her vagina was good for baby delivering thus could take a good cock etc"
overall the quality of the books i find to be fair.. he has good ideas here and there.. the idea of killing main characters over and over is interesting but annoying to the reader i think ( at least me) and the delayed encounters by what seem like run on situations gets a bit tiresome
i find myself skimming through a lot of the parts as its useless info
i remember someone here saying the book is > lotr and all i can say is LOL.. that book i purposely read every detail as it was a joy to read it and they fit in whatever scene that was going on

Just stumbled upon the first book today while at the store. Will I ruin anything reading the book and watching the show at the same time? Or should I just knock out the book before watching? |

I mean... I don't know what to say except that I strongly disagree with your taste.
I don't know if you're reading it in the English edition or the Portuguese translation but to basically describe some of his writing as:
"every woman that appears in the book he goes with some description like
"she was the cook.. but her tits they were firm, ripe for baby sucking nipples.. her vagina was good for baby delivering thus could take a good cock etc""
is just mind-boggling to me. Sure he doesn't indulge in high pretentious prose, but he has a knack for plain language and direct descriptions. His dialogue is superb. All the rough language and weird blending of old English and modern phrases allow his characters to be eloquent or crass... in other words, expressive.
This is a massive story. It is truly an EPIC fantasy and it's the forerunner of this genre. I understand that people may get tired of reading and feel like skipping ahead. This is just ALIEN to me. I liked AFFC the LEAST out of the 4 published so far and even then, I was glued to the book and could not stop reading or skip a single word.
Every scene and every seemingly innocuous facet of each POV is intricately tied to the greater whole. I can't begin to describe how fucking crazy it is that he has created a story of such epic proportions and not only manages to keep everything aligned and perfectly matching with each other, he also has the flair and time to leave hidden gems for the persistent and alert reader.
If you like Dungeons and Dragons and thought Dragonlance was one of the greatest works of fantasy literature (it's fun, but it's not
great imo), then this series is probably not for you.
Honestly... how can you not marvel at this guy and his work? For example, the Red Wedding was a masterpiece for me. A boy king who was unbeaten on the battlefield made a grave mistake. In this culture, we can already see the solemnity of oathkeeping and the dangers of being a king. Robb cast aside his sworn word as a king and took another to wife. His adversaries were not stupid or clumsy - they were brilliant and lethal and took advantage of his boyish mistake. And he paid the price.
This story is not about a group of plucky heroes trying to fight some villains and save the world. They do not get help from wizards and they do not all miraculously survive every single dangerous encounter to emerge triumphant.
This is an EPIC, in the style of the Illiad or Three Kingdoms. Nations are struggling against each other, factions will stop at nothing to outmaneuver and crush others. Key players arise, like they did in history, but they aren't immortal. They aren't protected by some pussy kind author who sacrifices realism to save his precious hero.

^ u seem to be very convicted on your beliefs here hehe and i won't argue with ya .. i think in the end it just depends on what kind of literature one is used to reading
but
+ Show Spoiler +
i made the comment on the killing of heroes but it really isnt important.. in the end its the authors choice to kill.. it was very obvious from the get go that there was a trap being made by the freys after the wolf wanted to attack as soon as they arrived.. the author has a choice there for stark to get a gut feeling something is wrong and leave/or do something about it or let him be caught in the trap... its a choice and we can see he likes to go on the killing of heroes way which is interesting in a sense but also a bitch for the reader for we spent chapters/books getting to know the guy to see him die and start fresh with someone else sucks
thats not really my issue with the book though
i usually avoid fantasy books because it tends to be a compilation of good ideas ripped off and put together into something 'new' but in a poorly to semi-poorly written fashion.. id say that this book is in the top of the range in terms of quality but i personally feel its a bit lacking and am getting a bit tired/bored of reading it
maybe im just mad they killed the true king of the north FFS!!

Great episode.
This episode flowed a lot better than the first, IMO. The actor playing Joffrey is perfect because he emits the inner bitch.
But was it just me or does Cersei seem a bit subdued? I always imagined her to be a scathing bitch whenever she was angry but I could barely hear her - especially during the scene where Arya was brought to the king.
Oh and Tyrion just owns. Perfect actor to play him.
I wonder how the direwolves will look later on in the season or in the next. They said they are as big as horses when fully grown.
