Since the tech threads usually get a lot of attention and good advice thought this would be a good place to ask:

Which monitors are worth considering for poker?

notes:
- not for gaming so I don't care about >60hz refresh rates
- higher resolutions are better but I'm not married to getting 4k if there are high quality good value options at lower resolutions, although 4k is preferred
- viewing angle is important so only the best panel types (IPS only I think?)
- no budget but not going to buy something obscene and still looking for good value:quality ratio
- will probably buy 2 of them
- sometimes I put monitors in check-in when travelling so the huge ones (40"+ are out), ideal size is unknown probably 27-30' range

I wouldn't discount higher refresh monitors just for gaming. Been using a 144hz monitor as my primary monitor for a while and feels so much better to grind on than playing on my secondary monitor or on my laptop. It just feels laggy and a lot more straining to my eyes on 60hz. You have a lot of people that will buy really comfortable chairs that they work on all day long but they don't invest in higher refresh rate monitors at which they stare at all day which I think its just as important imo.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1384767/official-the-qnix-x-star-1440p-monitor-club these are quite nice for the price, and overclock to 90-120 hz

I'm happy with mine and seen them recommended here before.

Hm.. Off-suite socks..

Arent higher refresh rates designed for moving objects on screen? Seems like looking at static imagery wouldnt matter what your refresh rate was.

Personally I use a 27" 1080p 60hz LCD monitor by Asus. I game on it (not knowing what >60hz even looks like) but it certainly provides the screen real estate I need. Think it cost me less than $200. Good viewing angles, good response time (1ms) so there's no ghosting of objects on screen.

Honestly if you're still planning a BW return I'd look at a laptop. Probably 15". I'm always sad when people lose 20+ APM to big screens.

Higher refresh rates are a lot more noticeable in games but even for something more casual like poker grinding you can still definitely feel the difference. For example if you shake around your cursor you will see it teleporting around and multiple instances of your cursor, but on higher refresh rates its a lot more smoother.

heres a vid that shows what I'm talking about when I said that it feels laggy.

I'm skeptical if I'd even be able to tell the difference under normal usage. The monitor I have now was accidently set to 30hz for a while and when i noticed I was just like "oops lol" and put it back to 60hz. I didn't look for a difference but I didn't notice one either.

I've also seen tests of people sitting down at random computer and having to guess if it's 60hz or 120hz and guessing wrong more than 50% of the time. It wasn't a huge sample size but it goes to show the difference is at least not obvious to the average user.

For arguments sake, let's say we can tell the difference though. Or let's say it doesn't matter if we can tell the difference we can still receive the benefits of higher refresh rate.

Does this really effect anything? What are the confirmed advantages?

the conditions of that video were rigged to amplify the differences in refresh rate by using conditions that don't exist in the real world (fliming at 240 FPS and using different colored backgrounds for each monitor)

this is obvious when you put your cursor on an empty desktop on a 60hz monitor and move it across slowly, is it laggy like in the video? no, it's fine and moving across as smooth as it ever has.

I see what the video is demonstrating. If I swing my mouse back and forth quickly across my 60hz monitor I can see it "skipping". I feel like I can almost count how many instances of the cursor I see instead of seeing it actually just smoothly flow back and forth. It looks something like this

I think 28 inch 4k may be the sweet spot for you. Although I don't know about having two of them, that is a lot of space. But whatever floats your boat

Here is a good looking one for value from Samsung http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product...mputer_monitor-_-24-022-246-_-Product

Here is the full list from Newegg of 4k monitors bigger than 27inches http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product...171%20600416631%204814&isNodeId=1

Also, if you aren't planning on gaming, and aren't ocd, then you don't need more than 60hz. Chill out dudes.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product...mputer_monitor-_-24-022-246-_-Product I'm using one of these actually, I like it, but the base comes out at a 45 degree angle fwiw and isn't removable if using while traveling. I'm pretty paranoid it's going to snap off, but it's made it over two flights so far and I like the monitor

I think I'm sold on 144hz after everything I've been reading. I was crushing it in overwatch as mccree and someone asked what my refresh rate was, I said 60hz and they said I reaaaaaalllly need to bump it up if I'm that good at 60hz.

Gonna get a 27" ASUS 144hz for about $300.

i'm personally using a 144 FPS 1440p monitor, and honneslty, if you don't game at all, i would not get 144 FPS. For poker, 1440p is a lot more important imo. Yes at 144 FPS your cursor moves smoother, but 1440p is way more important imo. Getting both of them AND a high quality monitor is very expansive and really not necessary for your needs.

I'm not at an expert for non gaming monitor but i think i would recommend getting this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZFFN656?tag=pcpapi-20&pldnSite=1

The image for this screen should be stupid good. Its IPS, 1440P, 24 inch. Smaller screen + high resolution = greater pixel density. The reviews are also really good on newegg.

Yea dude once you start gaming on a 144hz monitor you won't go back, its night and day.
If you have the money, i recommend my Acer Predator, its really nice. The problem is you need a beast of a machine to maintain 1440p 144 fps at ultra settings in newer games.

how do you find the viewing angle on this? like if you're slouching or the monitor is off to one side quite a bit (like in a dual monitor setup) is it harder to see the image? Or certain colors?

I ask since the panel type is TN

Here's another alternative: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PC9HFNY?tag=pcpapi-20&pldnSite=1

4K Screen
Choice between 24 and 27
Good ratings
IPS panel
Viewing Angle 178° H x 178° V

almost went with that 27" dell but seems to be having problems when waking up from sleep mode; windows resizing and/or having to unplug/replug in the power to wake it up

looking for something similar to the 27" dell floofy just linked, maybe LG-27UD68-P?

https://www.amazon.com/LG-27UD68-P-27...4/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

4k as well all around similar specs and similar price

not sure how much i value 4k over 2k (1440p), don't think it matters much for poker since you can just rescale tables to fit as many as you want on your screen anyways, does anything really look that much better on 4k to make it worth prioritising?

I think anything bigger than 27" is going to be too hard to transport and anything under will be too small so 27" is the sweet spot.

Smuft   Canada. Aug 26 2016 10:13. Posts 633

the dell that floofy linked P2715Q does have wake on sleep problems but other than that looks really good, I found out that the latest revisions of the monitor fixed the problem (so if anyone else wants to buy those, ask for revision a03 or later)

however I like the LG-27UD68 better, it's pretty much the same as the dell except the margins around the actual screen are smaller (the bezel), so it is nicer for a dual monitor setup IMO, it's also about ~20% cheaper in Canada atm

gonna ship 2 of those today

GG ty nerds

Keep in mind how it looks depends of pixel density. 4K on a 35 inch screen will not look as good as 4K on a 24 inch screen.

As a test, put your currently resolution to 720p to see what "low pixel density" looks like....

I recently bought a 144hz monitor and if you do any sort of gaming whatsoever I would highly advise that refresh rate comes first above all other considerations. It's so shocking how much smoother everything is. Think of it like watching a 60fps movie compared to the standard 24fps movies you are used to. That super silky buttery smooth effect is outstanding for gaming. Thing is, I got used to it pretty quick. I had to exchange my monitor for another one and for a few days I was stuck back on my "old" 60hz monitor, and my god I practically found the experience unusable. I got gotten so used to the high refresh rate that anything less looks like ancient garbage now.

I mean it feels like I am playing games on some super outdated PC with a choppy ass framerate. Even normal stuff like web browsing feels "off", since now I can see text skip as I scroll down the page whereas before everything just slid like silk around the screen.

bye now
