Yea well, after this little session (guess were I started today?) to calm my nerves I guess Lady Luck owns me good questions on the exam. I feel that I might sometimes be sitting in unnecessary hard games when I play 5/10. There's only like maybe 6-7 really bad regs there for my standards so now when I'm supposed to "go pro" or whatever it's called I think I'll try to play exclusively 3/6 for maybe 100k hands or so. Would be fun to actually get make sure that I win every month again rather then having swings of 20k every 2nd month or so.

“This bill is the most important legislation for financial institutions in the last 50 years. It provides a long-term solution for troubled thrift institutions. ... All in all, I think we hit the jackpot.” So declared Ronald Reagan in 1982, as he signed the Garn-St. Germain Depository Institutions Act.

He was, as it happened, wrong about solving the problems of the thrifts. On the contrary, the bill turned the modest-sized troubles of savings-and-loan institutions into an utter catastrophe. But he was right about the legislation’s significance. And as for that jackpot — well, it finally came more than 25 years later, in the form of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

For the more one looks into the origins of the current disaster, the clearer it becomes that the key wrong turn — the turn that made crisis inevitable — took place in the early 1980s, during the Reagan years.

Attacks on Reaganomics usually focus on rising inequality and fiscal irresponsibility. Indeed, Reagan ushered in an era in which a small minority grew vastly rich, while working families saw only meager gains. He also broke with longstanding rules of fiscal prudence.

On the latter point: traditionally, the U.S. government ran significant budget deficits only in times of war or economic emergency. Federal debt as a percentage of G.D.P. fell steadily from the end of World War II until 1980. But indebtedness began rising under Reagan; it fell again in the Clinton years, but resumed its rise under the Bush administration, leaving us ill prepared for the emergency now upon us.

The increase in public debt was, however, dwarfed by the rise in private debt, made possible by financial deregulation. The change in America’s financial rules was Reagan’s biggest legacy. And it’s the gift that keeps on taking.

The immediate effect of Garn-St. Germain, as I said, was to turn the thrifts from a problem into a catastrophe. The S.& L. crisis has been written out of the Reagan hagiography, but the fact is that deregulation in effect gave the industry — whose deposits were federally insured — a license to gamble with taxpayers’ money, at best, or simply to loot it, at worst. By the time the government closed the books on the affair, taxpayers had lost $130 billion, back when that was a lot of money.

But there was also a longer-term effect. Reagan-era legislative changes essentially ended New Deal restrictions on mortgage lending — restrictions that, in particular, limited the ability of families to buy homes without putting a significant amount of money down.

These restrictions were put in place in the 1930s by political leaders who had just experienced a terrible financial crisis, and were trying to prevent another. But by 1980 the memory of the Depression had faded. Government, declared Reagan, is the problem, not the solution; the magic of the marketplace must be set free. And so the precautionary rules were scrapped.

Together with looser lending standards for other kinds of consumer credit, this led to a radical change in American behavior.

We weren’t always a nation of big debts and low savings: in the 1970s Americans saved almost 10 percent of their income, slightly more than in the 1960s. It was only after the Reagan deregulation that thrift gradually disappeared from the American way of life, culminating in the near-zero savings rate that prevailed on the eve of the great crisis. Household debt was only 60 percent of income when Reagan took office, about the same as it was during the Kennedy administration. By 2007 it was up to 119 percent.

All this, we were assured, was a good thing: sure, Americans were piling up debt, and they weren’t putting aside any of their income, but their finances looked fine once you took into account the rising values of their houses and their stock portfolios. Oops.

Now, the proximate causes of today’s economic crisis lie in events that took place long after Reagan left office — in the global savings glut created by surpluses in China and elsewhere, and in the giant housing bubble that savings glut helped inflate.

But it was the explosion of debt over the previous quarter-century that made the U.S. economy so vulnerable. Overstretched borrowers were bound to start defaulting in large numbers once the housing bubble burst and unemployment began to rise.

These defaults in turn wreaked havoc with a financial system that — also mainly thanks to Reagan-era deregulation — took on too much risk with too little capital.

There’s plenty of blame to go around these days. But the prime villains behind the mess we’re in were Reagan and his circle of advisers — men who forgot the lessons of America’s last great financial crisis, and condemned the rest of us to repeat it.

Day 2: 2.6.09

As I wrote yesterday today I had volleyball tournament so I didn’t have time for poker. Tournament was good. We had nice sunny weather and our team finished on 4th place. Tournament finished in the evening and after that we went to pub to drink some beers with friends, but every body was very tired so we went home early.
Tomorrow I want to play cashgame session and watch some more videos.

The cash game has been quite swingy for me as well. Lost 800 the first day at Rio's 2/5 6max, up about 2900 from 5/10 and then proceed to lose 2200 the night before I came back to LA.

I don't know if I remember all of the big pot or interesting hands but I'll try my best.

5/29 Rio's 2/5 6max.

Players were just incredibly horrible, just as any other live FR players who are loose/passive/weak. They use their "FR standard" to play the 6 max. An old guy sat directly to my left is a total non-believer, literally playing 90/5 style. After my 85o cracked his A4dd on 8s 5d 6h Jd Xs board where he flat my flop cbet and shoved on the turn, he went on tilt against me. So this hand happened just few orbits after the hand. I opened utg to 20 w/ JJ, he flat, btn flat and bb flat. 85 to the flop. Flop came T84r, I cbet 60 and he flats, turn a 6, I led 160 into 200 and he shoved for 200 more, I obv instant called. River T and he flipped KTo. wp sir.

5/30 Rio's 5/10 FR.

Sb led out 200 and pfr instant jammed for 1k, I snapped and sb folded. turn and river bricked off and pfr turned over 78dd and my AA incredibly dodged trillion outs and held up. pfr started to berate and said something like..you called that?!?! I was like..yea, ez call sir, snap and fist pump. He's like..do you call if I crai? I replied, even faster sir, I never fold there. He then went on tilt and I left the very next hand cuz my friend was here for lunch (First time ever that I hit and ran somebody)

5/31 Bellagio 5/10 FR

down 2k right off the bat (don't really want to talk about the hand that I　ｓｔａｃｋｅｄ　ｏｆｆ　１５００　ｗｉｔｈ　ｂｕｔ　Ｉ think it was okay) Anyway..I kept grinding and grinding and finally after 7 hours of sitting on the same table, I was up 100. One interesting hand was that a new guy who just sat down couple orbits ago opened to 40 and co and btn both called. (btn had eff. stack of 4k and I covered him) I flat in bb w/ J5cc. flop 67c9c...I decided to play this pot cautiously. It was checked to btn who bet 100 into 160 and i tanked and flat. pfr then announced raise to 350 (leaving him 650 left) and btn folded, ez decision for me then, I then announced all in and pfr called. turn 5 river J...I turned over my two pair and pfr said it's good and I shipped a decent size pot which brought my winning to about 1700 for the night.

2nd interesting hand I played was that utg opened to 45, 2 callers and btn (4k eff stack) called and I flat T8ss in bb. flop AsKs7 and was checked to btn who instant bet 200 into 225. I tanked for 30 secs before calling (didn't want to make it too obv that I was drawing), everyone folded. Turn 6c which gave me 3 extra outs. I checked and btn instant bet 300 into 625 (weird size...but he's a live donk so he probably doesn't know how bet sizing works). I tanked and called, river brought an offsuit T (damn, for 1 sec, I thought I got the miracle offsuit 9!) I checked again and btn instant bet 500, I tanked and folded. Spent 500 on a draw hoping I can ship his 4k over..sigh...

3rd hand I shipped 1200 w/ my AA and bb's AK on K44 board.

the last hand of the night which totally killed my mood was that I opened 45 utg1 w/ two black QQ and got 3 callers.
$180 to the flop and the board was Qh79h, I obv didn't really like the flop that much but still can't complain about the top set. Given how cordinated the board was, I led 150 into 180 and got one caller who just sat down few hands ago. After he called，　Ｉ　ａｓｋｅｄ　ｈｏｗ　ｍａｎｙ　ｂｉｌｌｓ　ｈｅ　ｗａｓ　ｐｌａｙｉｎｇ　ａｎｄ　ｈｅ　ｒｅｐｌｉｅｄ　６　(makes it 1500 to start with). Turn brought the ugliest card in the deck: 8h. I thought for a little bit and decided to go for a check/raise. So I checked and he jokingly asked me how much i had and i said I had him covered. he threw out his bills and I crai and got snap called and he turned A5hh for the nut flush. Needless to say, I　ｎｅｖｅｒ　ｂｉｎｋ　ｗｈｅｎ　Ｉ need to.

No graphs or session stats, since I'm recreating my HEM database, so here's a pretty lame blog post. Dropped roughly 2bi due to bad play (3betting some people too much and not keeping track of it) and a bit of run bad, but it really wasn't a big deal. I also had no HUD, and it made me a bit uncomfortable to play. I think I played about 1200 hands or so.

Will have updated graphs tomorrow.
