Thats very libertarian of you, nice.

The only way to 'regulate' social norms is through social 'pressure'. Obviously strong worker laws should be in place e.g. most of Europe has quite good ones and the US has 3rd world employee laws. But it's not like you can regulate human behavior up to high standards through laws, it's a mixture of having your needs met (meaning you need strong social systems) and seeing your work as valuable (even if you don't enjoy it). Once a company's image is tainted they ll have hard times finding quality people.

Easily the most absurd police shooting video I have ever seen in my entire life. Tuscon police officer shoots an elderly man in a wheelchair in the back about 7 times because he had a knife.

well, not sure if there's a news thread, and everyone reads this so may as well post it here, but here's a list of poker players that died recently.

Letherass (today)
ADZ124 (a few months back)
Nutsinho ( a year or two ago)

Are they all suicides?

Just did some research:

leatherass had a bad heart. No tellin' yet how he died though.

adz124 jumped out a 29 story window. He was dealing with mental illness like illuminati stuff.

nutsinho allegedly "accidentally" over-dosed on prescription pain pills.

I didn't like any of these people but it is sad they are dead. RIP.

I disagree with the Adz comment about mental illness.

I saw a video on YouTube during this whole joeingram1 AWAL saga recently where he is on a podcast with Doug polk and he just starts getting emotional talking about his mental health and how his depression is likely from losing his bankroll in Australia which he never got over.

Doug then tries to tell him yeah that sucks but it happens and its OK and how at one point he had a 500k roll and was down to a few k or something.

Whether its joeingram, Adz, or you its plainly obvious that losing your bankroll is highly correlated with depression and this so called "mental illness".

You can either make the case that
1. There are 2 types of people, the type of person that can deal with something like that and the type of person who can't

Or

2. Its just not something anyone can really get over. (I.e. Doug isn't depressed only cause he was able to make back his roll)

Its hard to say which is true

Bankroll = basically your life. You need to be honest with yourself whether you can deal with losing it or not and make decisions accordingly. If I am being honest I'd have an extremely tough time dealing with something like that.

I think its bs / very fishy that you bust your roll and suddenly the illuminati is after you or you are now some bipolar guy making robot text on liquidpoker. 0 accountability for being a dumbass, 0 blame placed on dumb communist / anarchist ideas ruining your life. Its basically like that movie Shutter Island. Its much easier to pretend you are crazy than it is to deal with your reality.

I don't know adz at all personally but to just auto place blame 100% on his mental illness and not him being likely very dumb is a total load of crap.

Take group of 100 normal people.

Have them lose their bankroll in a devastating way. Over time you will see way higher levels of supposed mental illness than population arising out of nowhere...

Sounds like a bunch of bs to me...

stupidity can often be a side effect of a mental illness, not sure what your point is.

What?

I think my point is very self explanatory....its clear that the triggering event is the loss of bankroll...not some ghost illness

Some of these guys their stupidity helped them run up a roll in the first place (id say thats the case for rikd, adz, and joey).

Doug is a very intelligent guy. Intelligence and rational decision making was probably a key factor in being able to fight through something like that. I don't think Doug running up a roll was because he was a risk taking dumbass.

"I don't know adz at all personally but to just auto place blame 100% on his mental illness and not him being likely very dumb is a total load of crap."

Mental illness can make people say and believe really stupid things, which can end up with them committing suicide. At least that's what I've observed in people with schizophrenia and depression for example.

It's not being used as a code-word to excuse someone's behavior, it's just a descriptive term to explain why someone would jump out of a 29th story building.

What I'm asking is why do all these ppl magically have their mental illness only after they have gone bust?

It's interesting because you keep talking about mental illness like it's this thing that people are born with and it's a thing that is believed to be uniquely responsible for XYZ behavior.

Mental illness means you are not well mentally over a significant period of time. It can develop at any point during a life, based on a certain set of circumstances. Genes create a predisposition not a destiny; they are very rarely the unique cause of an outcome. That outcome is based on different triggers in the environment.

You're obviously right that losing a huge bankroll (or going bankrupt in the business world) is going to affect someone's mental health and some people have learned resilience and can get over it, while others will just sink. It's a huge event and a trigger for some people to develop mental illness or worsens an already existing illness or fragile mental state.

You didn't actually know any of these people and what they were going through so I don't know why you feel so comfortable speculating that they were fine before they lost their rolls. Especially when we know that they didn't lose their rolls in one simple decision, but probably a cascade of decisions, over some period of time, which is a lot more likely to stem from mental instability than simple "stupidity". When you consider that it obviously takes some intelligence to build such a small fortune in the first place, your assessment seems even more ridiculous.

To answer your question directly: it probably was always there, to different degrees in different periods, but they never made a show of it, so it was impossible for us to observe it. It only became visible at critical points where it caught people's attention due to its extremity. One such critical point was losing a lot of money for them, but it could have been a break up with a girlfriend, an illness, or something else.

I don't have time to respond to all that right now.

But I imagine if alot of those same people won the lottery they would be magically cured lol. Very strange...

I think the point is, anybody, mental illness or not, will not feel well after losing 500K obviously. But someone who already suffers from depression could sink into the abyss from an event like that, while someone who is well mentally will definetly feel bad for a while but will recover from it.

well yeah obviously...

but my point is that people in generally wayyyy too easy place all the onus on mental illness and disregard everything else. ADZ was a person that was egotistical and materialistic and probably was a big factor in why he wasn't able to handle the transition from black friday very well. BUT is anyone going to just point these things out? NO. They place ALL blame on mental illness. Which is a load of TOTAL CRAP!!! This happens WAYYYYY too much in society. Its just so easy to use mental illness as a cover for all forms of dumb behavior and personal responsibility. I'll say this a million times, in the case of RiKD his main downfalls are his dumb communist and anarchist ideas which no one seems to want to point out. Just like they do with Venezuela, the dumb communists in this forum dont want to admit that following these crazy ideas leads to a country/person's life getting ruined.

IMO my take is very important and adds value. I am a person muy sabioso, k1ng of independent thought, top 10 power r4nk1ngs in life experience, etc. my takes are original and add a ton of value. your take is very basic and adds no value.

dude just linking a dumb study by some god damn OMG PHD is the most annoying thing ever.

These dumb studies are what ppl like Stroggoz blindly follow because they are supposed to be SMARTZ ... BUT what actually is happening is there are alot of dumb ass people with 0 common sense pencil pushing also spreading propaganda depending on which type of person (usually communist) supports the academic department.

Obv money isn't everything and maybe you are taking some stuff out of context. I'm not going to do a "STUDY WAR" and just link random shit like "STUDIES SHOW WINNIng the Lotto isnt as much as a high as it is losing 500k networth" or something. That's not really my style and I think its dumb. Yes I value money more than the average person but I think I am reasonable.

As far as what we are talking about though, clearly in the case of ADZ, RiKD, Joeingram these are ppl all very much affected by the financial loss they experienced.

There are also researchs that says that money absolutly does increase well being: https://www.pnas.org/content/118/4/e2016976118
But i would agree with you that people usually over estimate how big of a difference it makes.

But obviously, it is only one variable, and you absolutly can be unhappy with money or happy with a lower income.
However i think that what is worst than being poor, is a rich becomming poor, since he was used to the perks of being rich. Humans often don't "miss" stuff they never had or never knew they needed. 200 years ago nobody was "sad" not to have electricity and plenty of people lived happy lives, but today we get quite frustrated even just 1 day whitout it.
