I'm in graduate school for physical therapy (doctor of pt program), caught an acquaintance of mine cheating on our last exam. Our faculty is very trusting (to a fault, apparently). Long story short, + Show Spoiler +

100% dude was cheating. He then has the audacity to say "easy exam" to my friend and I afterward. So what do you do?

additional background info, if u need it

update: program is competitive, clinical rotations are done by lottery, with the highest GPA's being most likely to get their top choice. Additionally, there are competitive clinical sites which require you to be in the top 5% of your class in order to apply/attend.
Poll: Game plan?
(Vote): Let it go.

lol fuck kinda messed up to let someone like that become a physical therapist O_O

Usually I'd let it go (unless it was an extremely competitive program/class then fuck him burn the motherfucker) but it seems morally wrong to let someone like that get certified to TREAT INJURED PEOPLE ;o

This is a tough one. I hate cheating/cheaters but I also dislike ratting people out... I'd prolly let it go just cause it's the easier thing to do. But I'm sure if I really disliked the guy I'd rat him out.

If you have concrete proof, like something really solid against the guy, I'd tell the teacher. (I'm on good terms with all of my college teachers, so I wouldn't have a problem saying something if I had proof.)

But I can say this, if I found out someone was trying to ruin my future in any way, especially when it comes to trying to get me in trouble in the most important test in my life, I'd do something crazy to that guy, and I don't mean just beating him up.

Just think of what you would do if a fellow classmate were to do something that decided whether you made millions of dollars or working for minimum wage for the next 20 years at McDonalds. (example)

you cant go through your life telling on people's indiscretions especially those which don't affect you. Though in saying that I would probably tell the guy I was aware just to see how he reacts.

idk, if this was a competitive field, i'd have him burn and laugh when he flips burgers later.

I dont know, I really don't want someone who cheated their way through school to be helping me through therapy after I break my leg, or something. It shows he's incompetent and doesn't take it seriously enough. Idk, I don't like the idea of cheating.

Because of his cheating, he will get a job where someone who didn't cheat and tried harder won't. Idk, I'd rather have a therapist who actually tried in school than someone who didn't.

Some other points

-you dont know what is happening in his personal life (depression etc)
-you will have to live with telling on him for the rest of your time at uni ->people will know what you did and never trust you again
-you dont know when you will need to copy someones assignment or do something similar. Fuck... Time at uni will prob be the most degen part of your life. Going out drinking/hangovers are super standard
-you have nothing to gain from doing this apart from asserting your own power

I don't give a fuck, it's just a test, not a big thing in life, especially if it's pass/fail basically. Tests are almost always useless anyways as a form of testing intelligence in a field. It matters more how they preform in real world situations and with the plethora of information that comes with our lifestyle now, it means more how you can apply that available information. The less you worry about others choices, the more you can focus on yourself and bettering you. In the end that's all the matters. So fuck it. You are getting fucked harder by your legislation at present, if you wanna piss on something, go piss on your states peeps on SOPA/PIPA.

seems like he makes it quite clear that its a competitive class, with top students getting better opportunities in clinical rotations, so it does affect him, and the whole class, to have some kid cheating.
and its physical therapy so theres a chance a person might actually suffer as a result of this guy having cheated, as he will be qualified without the relevant knowledge.
and he said "easy exam" so hes obv a huge cock sucker.

his personal life is fucking bullshit, schools have systems in place for people to cover people with medical problems, bereavement etc. You dont just get to fucking cheat your way through and tell everyone the exam was easy.

man, fuck that guy.

Id rat him out and not concern myself with a motto used by prison inmates.

I'd watch the movie 'School Ties' if I wanted the answer to this question. But seriously, this is a tough situation. Kind of amazing he's able to get away with this in the manner in which he did. Furthermore if you have to cheat on an exam in which the study guide covered 85% of the test then the kids an idiot anyways and will more likely than not get caught cheating at some point. However, if you really feel compelled to let the teacher know I might write a letter to the faculty or something letting them know this sort of this is going on and hopefully he ends up getting caught. Also it's clear that you work hard and are passionate about what your doing otherwise you wouldn't care. So good luck with your decision and with school.

Although it's kind of sad... That being said, I've basically cheated my way through uni so far (getting a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics soon). I'm talking about all the math theory stuff, it's basically impossible to cheat on math problems. No big deal, though. I won't ever use 99% of this stuff anyway.

Most universities have a very strict honor code. For example, lying, stealing, cheating, are all insta-expulsion. The schools do this to uphold their reputation of being a good university.

I took a class one time at a University overseas, and it's retarded how much cheating goes on there. At my own University, cheating was NOT done. But here at this European University, the professor would leave the class during the exam, and everyone would talk about the answers. One time the fucking Dean walked in, and no one got in trouble. He looked around, threw the exam in the trash, and the next class period we had the retake the exam. WTF?

In USA, cheating is NOT done. I don't know how it's done over seas, but in USA, it's frowned upon at the collegiate level.

Seriously, this guy is a fuck. If you're too afraid to tell the teacher personally, write him a note, or an email from a new email address, telling him you noticed cheating on the previous exam and you wouldn't like to say who but they had the study guide with them during the exam.

You don't have to rat him out, but the professor will be smart enough to keep it quiet to look for the one cheating. Especially for a doctorates... a bachelor is one thing, where half of your credits don't even really correlate with your major (core classes). But for a fucking PhD? This guy is going to be a Doctor, and that requires a ton of respect. I don't want a Doctor, to be a cheater.

I'm in agreement with Whoosel mostly.

At my Uni well over 50% of the student population cheated. Some of the cheating techniques were so absurdly advanced that if they put the same effort into studying they probably would have ended up with the same grade. It kind of made me sick given how much we paid to go, but I'm fairly certain most professors were even aware how many people cheated and just didn't give a flying fuck. I think the professor mentality was "well they're really only hurting themselves in the long run" or something who knows.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS FUCK that guy cheating in a competitive environment, especially when you're learning how to fucking treat injuries and shit that directly effects people

its fucked that anyone voted not to call him out

this shitty nerd goes out and starts treating people's injuries down the road, or tbh he'll end up becoming a chiropractor after no one hires his incompetent ass (but he'll still have a degree), and end up paralyzing someone doing one of his bullshit adjustments etc

Bigbobm   United States. Jan 18 2012 12:56. Posts 5511

i probably wouldnt care up until the point where he started bragging about it being an easy test. once he said that id have no problem calling him out there on the spot. of course its easy you faggot, you cheated.

that said, i know about half a dozen people who are physical therapists as my best friend was in the program. they definitely over prepare you, as most of them dont use 90% of what they actually learned, since they tend to specialize on different body parts. so not memorizing every bone, ligament etc in the body doesnt automatically make you bad

Your decision here is not difficult, but it depends on what you want to accomplish.

But first, the absolute last thing you do is confront the guy. If your first course of action is to confront him, he's just going to deny it and have plenty of time to think up an excuse in the event you turn him in. You don't have any concrete proof, so it's as easy for him as "deny til you die" and never cheat again since now he's aware he's in the crosshairs. If he knows you have this information, who knows, he may even go as far to lie and turn you in for cheating first to ruin your credibility. This is how these type of people think, he won't be remorseful, he will try to save his own ass by any means necessary. If you actually want to get this guy caught/in trouble, blindsiding him would be the best avenue.

Get Guy in Trouble:
Seeing how you do not have solid evidence of his cheating, I would not directly go to the professor. If you do report him directly, you put your neck out there and risk your own reputation in your professor's / peers' eyes. Instead, I'd recommend you send the professor an anonymous email / letter in mailbox detailing what you saw and explain your suspicions. If you're detailed enough, the professor won't doubt the seriousness of the allegation. As you said, he has cheated on exams before and was even retarded enough to ask a girl for an answer during the exam. This guy will no doubt cheat again and if your professor has any spine, he'll be ready next time and take the appropriate action.

Ignore It:
This route is obviously the easiest and requires no effort on your part, you just keep quiet and maybe the guy digs his own grave now or in the future. fwiw, I would not turn him. If you've ever cheated at all while in undergrad / grad, you've committed the same offense, are equally punishable, and would be acting completely hypocritical if you ratted him out.

Instantly call him out on cheating next time he brags about passing/results (which will probably be in a group of people probably classmates). I wouldn't condemn you for ratting the guy out. By letting it go you will not be helping anyone, even the guy who cheats, so i feel some sort of action should be taken.

I'd take this stance if it was a degree for like philosophy or some shit. But this guy will be directly working with people with serious life changing injuries. Do you really want a therapist who didn't try hard enough in school to actually learn the material to help you walk again or be able to hold a glass of water without spilling all over yourself after you just had a close to death experience in a car accident or some shit?

Cheating in this field is absolutely wrong, especially in a competitive market. Going for a doctorates, means you are taking this field extremely serious, and he appears not to really care about how not learning the material will affect his future patients.

This happened to me before on my last semester at Univ.

I was on huge life-tilt at the time (no excuse to cheat obv). I took a lower division class I didn't need for fun since I already filled out all the requirements to graduate. I already knew pretty much everything they were teaching and rolled through the midterms easily. Then on Finals (funny enough, this class was my very last final and I had already walked), I encountered a multiple choice problem that I couldn't remember the answers to so in a stroke of retardation, I took out my phone and tried to cheat. I'm still not sure why I did this since I probably would've still gotten an A in the class anyways and I didn't actually need the grade regardless. Long story short, some probable Freshmen guy and a girl decided to tell the T.A and then write to the professor about me scrimmaging through my phone. Afterwards, I had to go through multiple Student Judicial Affair meetings and talked to the professor. Thankfully, the professor and the SJA understood that I absolutely do not need the credit or the grade for the class and decided to give me a community service hours (lol) + F for the class instead of a suspension.

I can't make excuses b/c I did cheat obviously. But I was under pretty big psychological stress about other shit in my life and did something retarded that wouldn't have help or hurt me regardless of outcome. What I'm saying is sometimes consequence of the action could be a lot greater than the significance of the action itself.

We obviously don't know his story. He could easily not deserve the extent of punishment he might receive if you report the guy to the professor. If it really bothers you I think the best course of action is to confront him about it and observe his reaction. I'm sure you can figure out your next move from there.

Basically, try your best to not be "that guy".

For all those people saying cheating is bad, or cheating doesn't matter because everyone else does or lastly the talk of super advanced cheating. One of the biggest things about going to University is to learn to think for yourself even if most courses are garbage study guides/cheat sheets/memorization. You learn to figure out wtf is important, that is bullshit, what matters to you and how the world really works.

There was a study that taking the time to cheat/devise a strategy to cheat/get better grades can have as much Positive impact on your learning/development as those of you who are "bookworm super studiers"

An almost identical situation:
What if you were 100% sure him and a friend were colluding in poker at a table you were at? They are breaking the rules in order to benefit at the expense of you and the rest of the people at the table (because you said the class was competitive and the relative grades make a difference). I would guess that most people here would do something about that, although I could be wrong (and I personally don't know what I would do in either situation).

This is also removing the idea that he might do damage to someone if he ends up with a medical degree that he shouldn't have.

with all the resources available nowadays it's pretty simple to not cheat and do well.

.... nobody likes a snitch but if this guy is going to be super obvious about cheating then try to claim in front of a bunch of people that the stuff is easy i'd definitely call him out in the group and make him look bad in front of everybody. would never "tattle" to the teacher though, that's a bitch move.
