Girl A: "4 letter word, 2nd letter is an i, clue is motion picture"
Girl B: "Hmm... film?"
A: Yeah I was thinking that, but what about "scene"?
B: Huh?
A: CEE EYE EN EE ("cine" ) SCEEEENE

I hope she pronounced it scene and that's the only reason you found it funny.
Cine is a very very very solid option. The joke's on you if I have to tell you why.
edit: if she pronounced it "zine" "sajn" or whatever. IDK phonetic writing. you got SCHOOOOLED SON. |

She also put "wow" under "intimidate".
This wasn't the New York Times or anything, it was the 10 minute crossword from our local shitty newspaper.
Ciné (sometimes Cine) is usually used to refer to one or more of the home movie formats including 8 mm, 9.5 mm, 16 mm film, and Super 8. It is not generally used to refer to video formats or professional formats (such as 35mm or 70mm film).
I get the point, but well maybe you had to be there.
lachlan: they weren't hot, don't worry.
EDIT: I finished the crossword, so maybe it was much more obvious to me at the time. |

I got curious however.
You say movie theatre instead of cinema? Or is that just the States.
edit: sorry for the douchebaggery. but context and getting points across is hard on the internet... |

I personally use both, theatre is probably the more popular choice. |
