So this guy Will Molson made a thread on 2p2 saying that Chino Reem pretty much stole $40k from him. He explains that met Chino at a hotel room in London to play some poker. During the meeting Chino asked him for $20k on stars for both him and michael mizrachi, saying that mizrachi would make the transfer for both of them on ftp later (that was last year). Chino needed the money to directly buy into a tournament. Stars ended up transferring 40k to each by mistake instead of 20k each. Chino placed 3rd in the mentioned tournament for $150k and after some time Mizrachi transferred 'his' $40k back to Molson. On the other hand Chino never did it and still owes the guy $40k. After a long time Chino sent Molson a msg saying that he is broke and couldn't pay it back.

Now other people, durrrr is one of them, are coming out and saying that Chino owes them money too.

what a piece of shit this chino -____-

Sucks but not a "scam". This is just the common risk involved in lending money.

see there's a reason why banks do credit checks and even background checks when dealing in large sums of money in loans, mortgages etc etc.

so the scum bags can't fuck them hard.

[vital]Myth    United States. Aug 12 2011 14:35. Posts 12159

apparently all those guys (mizrachi, rheem, etc) have really major pit game problems and pretty much any money they ever win goes right back to the casinos

that's what a lot of dealers/floor people report

maybe it's because my exposure to chino was mostly before his WSOP ME score when he was the epitome of broke, miserable, angle-shooty sick asian gambler but i have no idea how these people could spend any amount of time w/ chino and think loaning him money would be a good idea.

i guess if you are eating w/ him at nobu and he's got $20k worth of bling on it's misleading but come on guys.

that crew is probably hurting pretty bad now that they aren't subsidized by ivey/antonius/interest free loans from full tilt poker so they are now going after new targets.

those guys biggest strengths and part of the reason they are good at those big event, live tournies is their mtt celebrity and charm. it works off the tables to take advantage of naive and/or pumped up guys too. it's shitty and i'm glad it's getting outed.

http://www.fuzionpoker.com/poker-gossip/david-chino-rheem-trouble-with-law/

And then this week Rheem made it to the final table of the WSOP 2008 Main Event. This assures him of at least $900,000 in prize money, which could go all the way to $9.1 million if he wins.

And then the news broke. Rheem has an alive warrant for his arrest. Sun Sentinel, which came out with the news, says that Rheem has multiple convictions to his name in Broward County, including convictions for felonies. The charges include dealing in stolen property, burglary, larceny and possession of marijuana. All this happened eight years ago and Rheem was sentenced to four months in jail with 30 months probation. Then in 2003 he was slapped with a misdemeanor trespassing charge in Hollywood. He did not appear in court. Therefore the court was compelled to issue a warrant for his arrest, which is still active.

This should be a lesson for all the young onliners that have to play live now. Casinos are full of shady people, scumbags, angleshooters and plain criminals, I should know because I've played a lot of live and I imagine it's not so different, if even worse in the US than here. Don't be too naive.

Most casino guys have a problem, lending them money is hugely -EV. We think because we are poker players that they also are, and play just poker but this is almost never true, casino people play all kind of games, this is why they are broke all the time. If they see young guys with a lot of liquidity they will try to capitalize on it for sure.

I think the 'scam' part was that Chino said Grinder would vouch for him, then when it came to the crunch Grinder said he hadnt said anything about vouching for Chino.

Its a scam in that Chino obviously didnt have the money in his account to transfer and used Grinders name to assure payment and then seized the opportunity to not only take that money to buy the tournament, but also to steal the additional funds that were shipped accidentally.

$20k was loaned
$20k was stolen

I'm sure he gonna pay everyone back, I've met him once when I was the PS regional director and the first thing he said to me was that I should considering sponsoring guys like JC Tran and Nam Le cause they are really good guys and they really deserve the sponsorship more than he ever would. I think like others, he got the gamble disease...

If you read some of the stories in 2+2, he downright scammed people on purpose and sometimes mocked them for it. I'm not sure how that fits the description of someone that's going to pay everyone back...
It might be a good thing that he just binked the 1st place in the Epic Poker tourney. He's probably going to HAVE to pay back some reputable people like Joseph Cheong, especially since Cheong still seems to consider him a friend according to the 2+2 posts and was seen railing Chino at the Epic Poker tourney.

Its worth remembering that the reason these people are able to scam such amounts is because they are able to convince people that theyre a reputable community member. In Chinos case people think 'oh this guy won $Xm he can pay for sure" or "hes friends with Grinder, he must be trustworthy"

Scammers are usually very friendly and seemingly open or extremely generous, their whole routine is build on trust and projection of something theyre not. Scammers are like sales-men, they have the ability to convince people that theyre the real deal and that person should place their trust and money in their hands.

Unfortunately, people are often embarassed after being scammed or worry that outing the person wont get them paid. People who take the attitude of "omg u let him watch u on teamviewer lulz ur so dumb" have it totally wrong, scammers are willing to forge trusting relationships with people over months or even years in order to get paid off.

There was a story from a guy who met Chino and was befriended over a couple of weeks, Chino took him out to dinner, told him about his childhood and all sorts. Then he came to ask for money from the guy and when declined, that was it.

To some people we're nothing more than a mark.

byrnesam id rather think that you are overestimating their abilities - in chino's case you make him look like a genius, adapting emotionally to any given mark he has ... in reallity he s most likely a huge action degen who doesnt have a big enough bankroll and tries to occasionally scam people that posses a lot of money

The problem is in the community itself. Everyone knows that poker players are much more careless about the money they have than any other person

Hes not a genius, but it takes a real talent to owe large amounts of money, still be able to convince people youre getting money and keep people hanging on to the hope that he'll pay them back. Scammers do have a tremendous ability to get along with people and be likeable (good scammers) so it should never come as a surprise to people that someone who is seemingly reputable among a community is a total scumbag.

Incidentally, according to Huck Seeds tweet Chino used his EPL money to pay back a bunch of people, mostly partial paybacks of 10% but apparently Ben Lamb in full.

Why Ben Lamb? probably because hes in the November 9 and come November Chino will need some more spending money for the baccarat tables

By order of the Committee, Mr. Rheem must continue to proactively repay his outstanding debts by, from this point forward, using any and all proceeds Mr. Rheem personally receives from personal poker winnings worldwide to satisfy all of his remaining financial obligations in an orderly fashion. In addition, Mr. Rheem must continue to report to the Committee regarding his compliance with the terms of his probation. The probation period will remain in effect until Mr. Rheem has satisfied his pre‐league formation financial obligations. Failure to do so or any subsequent violations of league policies or the law by Mr. Rheem will result in immediate suspension of Mr. Rheem from the League.

Our Beliefs:
The popularity of poker has been driven by the achievements and personalities of the world’s best players.
The world’s best poker players have created enormous value for poker tournaments and television programs, but largely without direct personal benefit or reward.
The world’s best poker players should play rake-free and be provided with a tournament experience that is first-class at every turn, custom-tailored to their specific needs, and makes winning an achievement of skill above all else.
The world’s best poker players deserve the spotlight more than ever before and they deserve to be part of an organization dedicated to advancing their individual careers and respectful of their individual freedom.
Watching the best poker players in the world compete against each other – and showcasing the strategy, skill and fun of poker – will be inspirational to all poker players and elevate the game globally.

thanks bryn, that was a good read. I guess of anyone to talk about this market DN is at least pretty deep in it. Why he didn't play if he thinks it +EV for the strongest players shows his true thoughts on himself? idk, it's weird that if he thinks there 0 ev for exposure (but he already is 100% exposed), +ev for elite from the free money added...normally Pokerstars wants to jump all over this stuff, and DN is their poster boy, so if DN is bashing it maybe Pokerstars wants it to die too.

the consensus is that the EPL is trying to get a player base and run with that when they develop an online site, which will be in direct competition to stars. so with this speculation DN doesn't want to help start/promote a league that could potentially hurt his future at stars.
