Gotta remember with older generations that they grew up with religion and not many doubting or questioning the church. They were told their beliefs and that is what they believe. Just because you show them some evidence does not mean they will be willing to change their belief system overnight

The core message of religion has it's ups and can actually help bring people together. When it's twisted and used for personal gain or misinterpreted as well as being stuck on the whole "law" aspect of religion it brings headaches and much sorrow.

repeating what carthac already said, ive found most people around my parents age (50-60) to be absolutely retarded with religion. For example my father was a high school math and science teacher in the 80's and yet he doesnt believe in global warming or evolution bc of his religious beliefs. Seriously retarded.

They're like trees, they're just there, and will continue to exist. Probably best to not care. And I mean this in a way where you really don't care. Not in the manner where you think you are better than them because you are a non-believer and try to convince the believers into non-believers. I frown every time I see those who try too hard to spread religion, but I can't see how you are any different if one is to convince others that there's no God.

Last week I caught an email in our filter addressed to the president of our company, about some bible bullshit called Nephalims. It was some typical religious chain letter email forwarded to a dozen or so friends of theirs claiming proof of these giant human beings apparently mentioned in the bible. Check out the following pictures that were included as their evidence:





This email goes on with your standard array of fancy fonts and bold letters exclaiming that this is 100% rock solid proof that these things exist and therefore everything in the bible is true. I've seen this cocksucker send emails to the pres before, and I'm sure half the people in my company would just eat this shit up. Nevermind the fucking eyestrain I get just looking at how fake these pictures are, the very fact that anyone could even forward this without noticing just makes me facepalm the fucking world. This is how stupid everyday average intelligent people can be. These are all college educated people, most with masters in their field, passing bullshit around like this. Really depressing.

It's hard not to care when peoples' religious beliefs directly affect my state of being. Christian groups, amongst others, directly oppose online gambling. My former president went to war in Iraq believing it was a mission from God. Christian groups also oppose abortion, stem cell research, thereby imposing on the rights of other human beings, and preventing scientific progress. The list goes on and on and this is a problem because the majority of Americans are religious.

Religious groups are pretty much the last remnant of people stuck in the past. In a time where broadband internet is readily available to most people, people should be enlightened with knowledge of science, logic, etc. instead you just have the millions brainwashed by their faith, reproducing and spreading the gospel to their kids. Kids don't know any better, so they grow up with the artificial beliefs imposed upon them by their parents, and the cycle continues.

Atheist #s have risen in the past decade though, so that's something to look forward to .

I give a free pass to attacking and belittling those with religious beliefs, since their beliefs have encumbered my lifestyle and affected me in one way or another at some point. An atheists beliefs have never once restricted what someone else is allowed to do. Fuck religion and anyone who has one.

As a Korean American person, it's nearly impossible to find other atheists around myself. (everyone's Christian or claims to be one..) Interestingly enough, a religious studies class I've taken last year had more atheist/agnostics than religious people O_o
As ppl get smarter, it's probably well expected to see atheism grow in number.

Since the divine comment is prob intended at me obviously I know there were ulterior motives, but him stating it's a "divine mission", is, like Baal said, a tool for manipulating the masses. It's obvious my initial comment meant to show that religion ruling America wasn't for the greater good.

this isn't an issue of the evil people in power manipulating the ignorant innocent masses, it's an issue of humanity itself. people naturally want to believe in things, especially if it makes them better than others...whether it's superiority of race, government, or religion. those in power aren't manipulating people with "religion" so much as they're manipulating peoples natural tendency to want to believe they're better than everyone else. people will do ridiculous things because of that, especially if it makes their lives even a little bit better.

this is a silly argument, the only thing i am "sure" of is that 1000 years from now, if humanity is even still around, most of what we think we know will be rewritten/changed and the outlook on ourselves/the world/the universe will be very different. progress is about the search for understanding, not the acquisition.

i agree with the last statement in maybe 1 in 1,000,000 cases. this certainly is an indication of a minute few individuals that are willing to look at the issue with an open mind, for the vast majority it's only a small insignificant variable in a huge equation or a new thought to latch onto or an easy way to rebel against parents/authority or a reaction towards religious injustice etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

the questions we have about god will always be impossible to approach via probabilities, and such an argument like the deity-probabilities one does nothing other than denote the obvious, because what we use the word for encompasses many different things and has different meanings to all of us. the word itself has a transhistorical meaning, whereas the spaghetti monster is just that, the spaghetti monster. unless we speak of god AND define it as a deity of some sort, then i say don't even bring it into the picture if you have any certainties whatsoever about 'it'. any certainties non-instrinsic to vital belief is just a show of ignorance and arrogance. genuine inquiry about god and our existence is much more complex than such a reductivist, logical positivism approach can ever reveal to us, and it actually requires us not to have our heads in the sand to do so, which it seems most people have a really hard time with.

I love this debate. You can never prove God. Contrastly you can never dispove God either. Even if He was looking you in the face you couldn't understand anything about Him because the very essence of God is uncomprehendable.

Religious nuts are annoying because they know in their hearts that they're better than you (even though they'll never admit it) because they know you're going to their version of hell while they won't.

Athiests are annoying because they're adamantly swearing on nothing. It's basically like the guy who's so quick to prove you wrong. Catching you saying the wrong thing and calling you out in front of everyone. It's like yeah ok, maybe I misspoke, but you're still a dickhead.
