a lot of the atheists that i know/have known go out of their way to express their beliefs and belittle the beliefs of those who differ to the point of causing conflicts. as far as i'm concerned, organized religion is bs, but i dont feel the need to belittle those around me who think otherwise.
imo, agnosticism is the way to go. you may not be right, but you can never be wrong :D |

post-(a)theism is a more intelligible position than agnosticism if you ask me, but i'd say that yes, unless you know a whole lot about religion or philosophy, you're better off an agnostic |

I suppose Empiricism would more accurately reflect my views. Call myself an agnostic mainly because you cant discount something just because there is no proof. absence of proof =/= proof of absence |

I give a free pass to attacking and belittling those with religious beliefs, since their beliefs have encumbered my lifestyle and affected me in one way or another at some point. An atheists beliefs have never once restricted what someone else is allowed to do. Fuck religion and anyone who has one. |

It would be sort of interesting to see a poll on LP on everyone's beliefs haha.
As a Korean American person, it's nearly impossible to find other atheists around myself. (everyone's Christian or claims to be one..) Interestingly enough, a religious studies class I've taken last year had more atheist/agnostics than religious people O_o
As ppl get smarter, it's probably well expected to see atheism grow in number. |

funny how people think the absense of religion would get rid of so many of the worlds evils, like people aren't naturally greedy, bigoted and selfish already. especially funny that some people think bush went to war with iraq because he thought he was on a divine mission.
as for fairy agnosticism, im sure 1000 years ago people would lol at the tiny invisible creatures that could kill all humanity with no understanding of what bacteria is. or lol at a giant rock falling from the sky and wiping out a world filled with gigantic monsterous lizards. the funniest thing from both sides of the argument at how tiny little feeble specks of matter with tiny little feeble specks of understanding/perspective about the world around them understand so much about the universe.
so yeah, huge lol to anyone that parades their beliefs around like they actually know for sure whats going on, especially if they think that makes them better than anyone with different beliefs. |

it wouldnt get rid of evils but it would get rid of the strongest manipulation tool in the arsenal of powerful people and it would improve the world overall, and i agree lol @ people went to war cuz he thought it was divine, he simply said that to manipulate the religious idiots, he went for economic reasons.
Well does that means we should be agnostic of the flying spaguetti monster? i think its quite a safe bet to say that a spaguetti with meatballs is not ruling this universe dont you think?
And it does indeed actually make you "better", at least in the area of critical thinking if you were not born into atheism. |

Since the divine comment is prob intended at me obviously I know there were ulterior motives, but him stating it's a "divine mission", is, like Baal said, a tool for manipulating the masses. It's obvious my initial comment meant to show that religion ruling America wasn't for the greater good.

this isn't an issue of the evil people in power manipulating the ignorant innocent masses, it's an issue of humanity itself. people naturally want to believe in things, especially if it makes them better than others...whether it's superiority of race, government, or religion. those in power aren't manipulating people with "religion" so much as they're manipulating peoples natural tendency to want to believe they're better than everyone else. people will do ridiculous things because of that, especially if it makes their lives even a little bit better.
this is a silly argument, the only thing i am "sure" of is that 1000 years from now, if humanity is even still around, most of what we think we know will be rewritten/changed and the outlook on ourselves/the world/the universe will be very different. progress is about the search for understanding, not the acquisition.
i agree with the last statement in maybe 1 in 1,000,000 cases. this certainly is an indication of a minute few individuals that are willing to look at the issue with an open mind, for the vast majority it's only a small insignificant variable in a huge equation or a new thought to latch onto or an easy way to rebel against parents/authority or a reaction towards religious injustice etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. |

the questions we have about god will always be impossible to approach via probabilities, and such an argument like the deity-probabilities one does nothing other than denote the obvious, because what we use the word for encompasses many different things and has different meanings to all of us. the word itself has a transhistorical meaning, whereas the spaghetti monster is just that, the spaghetti monster. unless we speak of god AND define it as a deity of some sort, then i say don't even bring it into the picture if you have any certainties whatsoever about 'it'. any certainties non-instrinsic to vital belief is just a show of ignorance and arrogance. genuine inquiry about god and our existence is much more complex than such a reductivist, logical positivism approach can ever reveal to us, and it actually requires us not to have our heads in the sand to do so, which it seems most people have a really hard time with.
i'm going to quote cioran here: "I feel safer with a Pyrrho than with a St. Paul" i relate to this because i definitely like the atheist/skeptical crowd more than the religious super-dogmatic crowd, but sometimes i just can't help to find both sides arguments almost equally pathetic. |

I love this debate. You can never prove God. Contrastly you can never dispove God either. Even if He was looking you in the face you couldn't understand anything about Him because the very essence of God is uncomprehendable.
Religious nuts are annoying because they know in their hearts that they're better than you (even though they'll never admit it) because they know you're going to their version of hell while they won't.
Athiests are annoying because they're adamantly swearing on nothing. It's basically like the guy who's so quick to prove you wrong. Catching you saying the wrong thing and calling you out in front of everyone. It's like yeah ok, maybe I misspoke, but you're still a dickhead.
Agnostics are just lazy, but it's better than being a passionate asshole. |

I hate how people who don't believe actually uses believer's belief that God is good to make a point. Whatever that point may be. |
