Hmm I really ought to study the advice in this thread. Tbh I might have been avoiding it cause its not easy to see it. Honestly think I'm prone to make the same mistake.

I feel like my problem is I really can't get a grasp of his calling range at all.

What I worked out so far is that...

Assuming he plays any suited card, theres 10 spades left in the deck. So 9+8+7+...+1=40. Assuming every 2 pair is in his range, 6*9=54. No one ever makes sets so I'm not even going to bother. J8 = 16. KJ = 8.

I might be able to see what beats me next time if I work on it...But what I DONT see is his calling range...and how to approach being able to see it the next time around.

Assuming he plays 80% of his hand preflop...his preflop range will be 80*13.26 = 1060. So I guess thats a good start to see exactly how wide he is.

But I have no idea how of that wideness...to evaluate wtf he is willing to call me with, and how the original denominator changes as the cards get layed out.

Lol actually I kinda see now...Any 7 and 9 any T and Q Random spades...Yea it seems crazy wide. But seeing that is really just at an intuitive level.

What Id like to know is how Tom is able to know its "about 60%" so confidently.

Alright so Tom's calling range is kinda more accurate.
Pair + Flush = 4*3*10 = 120
Pair + Straight = 4*3*6(no spade J+8) = 72

Bit inaccurate cause I don't account for 9s but Yeah. It seems to be a pretty legitimate basis for a calling range. That + Tx being calls usually makes it alot more than his hands that beat me.

And being that we can sometimes cross fingers and pray random 7x 9x and Qx calls I guess its a pretty standard shove.
