This is for music lovers. not just lovers but fanatics. maniacs. Addicts. obsessed people. i'm constantly on the hunt for the next hot track. Any genre, i just wanna find that gem. So if you're like me, i have a request;

I WANT YOUR PLAYLIST.

i maintain really really well organized playlists in 26 different genres. Almost daily I browse through my roughly 90k songs library and i individually select each song that i really really like and classify it into one of these categories ( or i add one if it doesnt fit anywhere, so yes its an ongoing process). It makes listening extremely enjoyable and efficient.

I like every single genre...but this is where im at so far.

i'll put (###) next to them to show how many songs each list has.

1. Five Stars. These are my all time favorite songs ever. any genre. These are the songs i consider masterpieces and i'm very very demanding before including a prospect in this list. this is the cream of the crop. (393)

2. 80's (439)
3. Ballads and Pop (392)
4. Christmas (9)
5. Classical (73)
6. Country (39)
7. Disco (252)
8. Eurobeat (172)
9. Eurodance (1034)
10.House (116)
11.Italo-Disco (114)
12.Latin (20)
13.Makin' Love (43)
14.Oldies (100)
15.Punk (61)
16.Quebecois (40)
17.R&B (200)
18.Rap (898)
19.Reggae (129)
20.Relaxation (23)
21.Rock (202)
22.Striptease (63)
23.Techno (106)
24.Trance (151)
25.World Music (8)
26.Zouk (317)

So, a huge playlist can be saved into a very small m3u file which can be read by most media or audio players. (40 songs = 3kb....900 songs = 80kb) This file directs your media player into playing each song using the file path info contained in this m3u file. Even if you dont have the songs on your harddrive, you can read a playlist m3u file by choosing open with -> notepad. So, assuming that many people have really great and diverse tastes and assuming that some work has been put into it, a playlist can be really really useful to find new things in this huge musical world and this is precisely what im looking for.

I'm willing to trade those m3u files by email or whatever.

However;

1. im not interested if you did not select each song individually
2. you must have done some work. each song must be there because you really really really like it..meaning dont just put a rap song in your rap playlist just because its rap
3. im not interested in lists compiled by companies or torrent sites or other third-parties. it needs to come from YOU. you compiled your list yourself.

Cheers, i hope to find some of those gems.

I still love Goldie, i listen to Timeless regularly, but sometimes his work gets a bit oldschoolish (i.e. clear sample pitching etc), so not quite Timeless^^.
Fav track is probably last track on Timeless, You and Me.

If you are only a casual music listener , like most people i guess, then yeah this thread sucks.
If, like me, you're an addicted music maniac in search for the next hottest track, then yeah, this thread has mad potential.

Having people copy pasting a few of their favorite tracks in here is not really what im looking for.

i just wanna know what other people consider their gems, classified by genre. my library is already huge (90k and growing) and my media player has a very fast and precise search function that enables me to scan my entire library so im sure i would already have lots of songs on my harddrive in each playlist i receive. takes 3 seconds to check. Also, i use really extremely powerful P2P's so it wouldnt take me a long time to gather the ones i dont have. Like i said...im an addict.

As for Last.fm, im already using it and its really good. I also have the Last.Fm plugin in my media player and this is really nice if you wanna browse stuff rapidly. You can even listen to other people 'loved tracks' which is close to the purpose of this thread but in a far less efficient way.

Nothing will beat the straight up trading of those small m3u files im talking about. Assuming those have been compiled with care and that the author has great tastes. For as little as 80kilobyte, i can send you the hottest 900 (insert genre here) songs out of the many thousands of the same genre that i've listened to. It might not work as well for very subjective genres ...say metal ...rock etc....but its very well suited for more objective genres such as trance and techno. (a good electronic song, my friend, is a good electronic song) The point is..its still great for most genres.

Im just disappointed that so few people use playlists though. Doesn't matter, i've already found people like me and we traded those m3us already so its all cool.

... it is truly great that you are passionate about music but you're acting in a ridiculous way. A true music lover - a student of music, listens to an artists' whole works. He doesn't shuffle through tracks like a 15 year old would do with her pop CDs. If you're making playlists of ALBUMS then by all means that's fantastic, but giving crap to people who aren't building some 'elite tracks' playlists is just beyond stupid. If people aren't posting those files that you ask for here it doesn't mean that they don't love music to the same extent that you do, it only means that they aren't using your technique to listen to music. That would be incorrect. Zouk is the finest Caribbean music out there. It's one of my favorite styles. It's amazing to listen to when you're on the beach.

And Loco... i'd say about 75% of my 520 gigs are made up of full albums. Playlists are not just for individual tracks. So yah, im not a 15 y-o pop whore ^_^

From what you said in this thread you were more interested in having a 'loved' or 'elite' tracks playlist, so I don't see how telling me how many albums you have on your hard drive is any relevant, sounds like you're just dodging the point that I made there. You're still shuffling a lot of music, even though it's not randomly. And that's fine, like I said to each his own but don't dramatize and say we aren't smart and/or music lovers because we don't do it.

I'm not going to lie though and that is my opinion on it: an artist's works should be listened to as a whole. I think shuffling is a flawed and juvenile (for lack of a better word) way of listening to music. If the music is shallow and manufactured then who cares the tracks stand on their own (because they're at their base the same tracks), and there are also tracks in other genres of music like electronic that stand on their own and that don't necessarily fall under those judgments but in general an interesting artist's works is something personal and often has a concept or can/has to be seen as a journey through the mind of the person who created that work of art at the time, and by just listening to a few tracks from it is not taking the artist and therefore his music seriously no matter how much you like those tracks. That is obviously assuming that you have made an habit of listening to music this way more often than not and not just doing it sometimes. I'm using 'you' in a general way here, I'm not saying you personally do.

But going back on the playlist subject, if you're using playlists for your albums too, then It's quite pointless considering all good music software have a built in search function. Unless for some reason you cannot access the search feature for a given amount of time (lol what right?) I don't see why it would ever be useful to use a playlist system for albums. What tells you that after having listened to an album you will want to listen to the next one you put there initially? Unless you're basically working by listening to new albums constantly I see no reason to do so. I mean I could see how it makes sense for a person working for a review site for example, to help him organize the stuff that he *has* to listen to. But even then, assuming the person isn't reviewing only one type of music, it sounds like a pretty bad idea to me to force a certain order unless current mood is not something important/a variable in the process for the person listening to the music, which sounds ridiculous to me because it should be.

OCD? Kinda looks like it. Or too much time on your hands?

iTunes (and I am sure other players) will organise all your songs into whatever way you want them to (ie style, artists, times played, etc..). So its not really about making playlists, its just making sure that your songs are all properly tagged with the correct genre information.

Anyway I am an ex-music student, and I appreciate all sorts of music. But as has been said before the attitude you are implying is that, we, are all insignificant music listeners because we dont have a 90k music library that is perfectly organised. I have about 8k songs, which are reasonably organised, but not perfectly. I am sure there are a few gems in there that you have not listened too, but if I were to list a few, what would be the point, as its not up to your standard of perfection, with your crazy playlists.

Alot of people here have given you some songs, which they feel are worthy, yet you dont seem to acknowledge any of their suggestions. I would say 99% of everyone else will not have these perfect playlists, and simply listing a few is the most easiest way to let you know.

I guess what I am trying to say, is stop being so stuck up and appreciate some of the suggestions.

I am a degen. Do not believe in any of my advice.

Loco   Canada. Feb 04 2009 18:29. Posts 20963

I doubt he meant that we are all insignificant music listeners, but there was definitely a condescending tone there - no doubt about it.

And yeah, I personally use foobar which has a lot more features than iTunes and is highly customizable, and I can't see how using his supposedly superior playlists method would ever make a positive difference in my listening habits, and I am a true music maniac, which he seems to think is not possible unless we adhere to his method.

Ok so post some of some songs that you your self wrote as a music lover you want to create your own right?

Judging others just cuz they don't spend hours and hours organizing music files and saying they don't love music is absurd. I'd much rather play my guitar or do some sick jam session with neighbors than sit in my room and organize some goddamn music files.

I agree with what Loco said I believe most creative (not just commercial) artist create their albums based on concept. After a while I really don't mind picking my favorite songs or just be selective because after listening to anything a thousands time your ears seems to not like it as much. And yeah you should probably use something like pandora (not sure if this one is still working) or last.fm would save your ass some trouble.

You guys are completely missing the whole point. I don't wanna impose my so called 'method' of organizing music upon you. What i was asking was whether we could trade those playlists. Either you have playlists or you don't. My method is not superior. I may have more playlists than you and they might be better organized but who cares. I don't care how many playlists you have or how you label them. As long as you have one good one that we could trade, that's fine. I'm sure some dude out there created a playlist of say, his favorite metal. Even if his mp3 database is organized horribly or not organized at all, as long as he has that one good playlist of metal , i'd be happy to take it.

About the artist's work, me saying that 75% of my data was made up of full albums was just to demonstrate that i do care about the artist's entire work. That doesn't mean i don't use playlists for individual tracks. But yes, playlists are almost exclusively for individual songs even though they work for full albums as well.

And Loco, you use foobar as well so presumably you know just how powerful that program is. That being said, i find it hard to believe that you don't see the potential in m3u playlist trading. And guys, please stop telling me about last.fm and pandora. I'm already using those and they're really nice, but no, these are not even remotely as good as straight up playlist trading.

If i could boost your self-esteem a little bit, i posted the same topic at teamliquid and quickly found out that these chobos aren't using playlists either

That was my point exactly, thanks.

Yes I know how powerful foobar is. So powerful that I don't need to use playlists. I consider myself a 'serious' music listener though so I use sites like rateyourmusic and last.fm to be in contact with people who have similar interests as mine to recommend me good music, good albums - not individual songs. I know that they will recommend me good stuff because I see what they listen to, so I don't need to go around on random forums to ask for playlist files from total strangers who don't share my tastes in music nor my listening methods.

You also haven't shown much modesty in this thread, calling yourself an obsessive maniac etc and boasting about your music library. You might have 90K songs and a well organized library but how's it relevant? To be honest in those 90K tracks I feel very confident that you wouldn't have anything of interest for me. So it's not like your some kind of music Guru because of those things.

Loco, it's impossible to argue with you because you distort the conversation so much.

My thesis is that m3u playlist trading is a superior method of discovering good music when it's done properly.

Your response to that is a strong; NO it's not a good way. You back up your argument by saying that my idea would be inefficient because of ;

1.my supposed boasting of a having a large and well organized music database
2.the importance of listening to full albums
3.the existence of sites such as last.fm and ratemymusic.com
4.the scarcity of people using playlists

Number 1 is garbage. 2 is offtopic. 3 might be an alternative but i've explained that it wouldn't be as good.
4. You're right, but there must be some people out there that have taken the time to build at least one good playlist. It's not like the masses are my target audience here.

@SpasticInk from Sweden; man...Jazz is horrible lol...pretty much the only genre that i hate.

and yeah, i can send you my classical stuff..by email or something. Just use foobar and Soulseek and you'll be a happy man.

I don't see how I'm distorting the conversation. I've only given my opinion on my method personally, and asked you what made your method better than mine or anyone's. To which you have never responded. Did I ever clearly state that mine was better or the best? No. The only thing that I did is mention how serious artists would like their listeners to listen to the music they put out and why. You said, on the other hand -- and I put it in bold when I quoted you -- that you didn't think your method was superior, yet here you are claiming that m3u playlist trading is a superior method of discovering good music like you did initially. So which is it and why did you deny it after we called you out on it?

My response is not a strong 'no'. I initially said I didn't get it, you didn't give me details you simply said that it wasn't hard to get. I went into details about my method and asked you what made yours better than mine, and how implementing into mine would make the listening experience any better, once again for some reason you haven't answered me and decided to decorticate everything that I said and disregard it. Am I really the one distorting things here? It doesn't seem so to me and two people agreed with me and another person said that you were also not very humble and respectful towards us as music listeners.

spotify is a program that allows you to stream music
its legal, backed by most major record companies (which means you also have access to the music published by these major record companies, I don't have any statistic but it becomes something like most of the music published in the last 50 years)
it doesnt give complete discographies for the more far-out bands there (for example ive been listening to lots of canterbury-prog recently, and it has complete discographies of well, few bands from there. but it also has some songs/albums of most bands there, so its amazing to check things out.)

if you have an account its for free, supposedly theres some commercial breaks every now and then, but so far that has been something like 10-15 seconds every 2 days for the month+ that ive had it. ;p
im sure thatll increase as the userbase grows, but then ill easily just pay the $16 a month to get it for free. its seriously wicked cool :D

Louispgagne   Canada. Feb 07 2009 16:01. Posts 32

a user can stream music to himself? and somehow choose from a large database from the record companies? seems a bit vague.. i wonder how this compares to pure mp3 download and last.fm . I guess i'll have to try whenever it comes out for us freakin' Canucks

about Jazz, we have the International Jazz festival here in Montreal and im sure all of the hundreds of variations are well represented but it's horrible. I have yet to hear a good Jazz song. Yeah nothing more monotonous than a Charles Mingus song.

You don't like everything except Jazz either. You haven't even heard of most of the music available in the world in the first place... how can you say you love it all is just beyond me.

People who say they love all music just want to appear as eclectic, knowledgeable and cool open-minded people, but they just appear as fools with very little if any musical knowledge.

Loco...your online personality is really strange.. its like a mix between weird, bizarre and funky, especially the way you structure your arguments in a debate. You seem to have a high propensity to unconsciously circumvent the core issues. yet there's something inside me that actually seem to like you.

and about Jazz...well, i guess we have different tastes. that's life.

Loco   Canada. Feb 11 2009 02:05. Posts 20963

if that is your perception of me then it's fine and I respect it but I'm afraid I don't agree. I may be drifting off subject in an argument but I'm not ignoring the core issues at all, quite the opposite I put quite an emphasis on it, even people tell me that all the time so I don't see how even if I'm inflating the whole thing it could ever change that much. that's really interesting, you barely post on this site but you know what my internet personality is like? are you basing this only on this thread? just wondering, I don't think I've been weird/bizarre in this thread, although I can definitely see why you would think that if you've been lurking this site for a long time. but if that's the case I'm not the same person that I was before so you might be seeing two different person and believe it's just one with two distinct personalities, that would explain it. I don't think you should dislike me or anyone just because of an argument. arguing doesn't make people enemies, or at least I've never seen it this way and I have the utmost respect for the person I'm arguing with unless they are being ridiculous like you have gotten in this thread on the Jazz subject, but even if I poke fun at you and your ignorance on a certain subject it doesn't mean I don't respect you as a person.

I must say I find it a bit ironic that you tell me this though because you've dismissed some of my posts previously and tried to put everything in your favor by stating that I'm using some sort of imbalanced strategem for arguing that made you unable to reply to me, I mean even if that was possible you could've still been quite clear on the subjects that I have touched instead of dismissing the whole thing. and now the only things you have found to say about jazz is that I had proven your point (I didn't so that sounded quite juvenile) and that we have different tastes and that this is all there is to it. In the first case you were wrong and just showed how musically ignorant you were on the subject (that is fine, look at your quote: you should learn from it) and in the 2nd one well I guess you just didn't know what to reply. It's not because we have different tastes, and it's not because you dislike Jazz that you can say that the whole genre is 'horrible' and 'monotonous'. The music has certain intrinsic qualities to it that you cannot take away from it, and by saying it was monotonous you did exactly that. It boggles my mind that someone can actually say such a thing, especially a self-proclaimed music maniac.

just read OP, and i got to thinking how amazing it is that 2,000 yrs ago we were literally trying to invent a wheel, like what 70 years ago we were inventing something that scratched a disk and made noise, then music over the radio, then 8-track, 30 years ago casettes, then we were listening to music that was played by simply pointing a laser at a CD, now 90k+ songs on music files...

Huge Muse Fanatic. Saw them live and my life has never been the same since. They are the only band that i've heard that sounds literally 10x better live. Here's 4 of my favorites

Muse - Map of the Problematique(cant find a good quality verson on youtube atm)

Muse - Bliss

Muse - New Born

Muse - Starlight

hey guys iu didnt read the thread but i guess ill ask some input cause i listen to all sorts of different music. my ipod is mostly alternative/classic rock, my car radio is on a pop station and my pandora is mainly rap so i can cover all diff stuff throughout the day

so for rap i was never a fan until recently and just listen to pandora. they have a lot of repeat to it but heres what i like/dont like so i can get some more recommendations:

REALLY like: biggie, ice cube, eminem, dre, snoop, bone thugz, warren g
like: nas, kanye
meh, kinda like: jayz, 50
dont like: tupac

havent heard a whole lot else cause pandora literally just repeats songs over and over and doesnt branch out a ton, and i was never too into rap before so i never listened to a lot of stuff you guys prob think is blasphemous. anyway, recommendations for new stuff i havent been listening to?

also here is a very diff band ive been listening to lately, they are called Era. MMA fans will recognize the first song, its fedors walkout song and the band is a really interesting mix of gregorian chants, made up language, english, etc etc:

this is fedors brother aleks' walkout song:

this is my favorite song by them. the chick who is dancing and lip syncing is not a singer in the band, shes just in most of their videos and is a dancer for them and shes super super hot. her name is irene bustamente and shes fucking awesome:

this last one is a diff kind of song and shows some variety in their music. would be a good base for a house song:

nobody said anything about his music being superior than anyone else's... only the method of listening to music.

but ya now that you bring this up i'm gonna say all music is not created equal.

It was quite an emotional moment for me.
