Although he's exagerating a bit, Loco has some valid points throughout the thread, while you people mostly prove that you can't tell an implication from equivalence, just to name the 99% thing.

Someone mentioned that African tribe members love music. Well, maybe some of you saw them sitting down, banging their hands and while listening to music, in my tv experience they were extatic about DANCING, using anything to make rythmical sounds. Just a thought came through my mind, that maybe the word music means something way different to each one of you? That would explain why Loco is so pissed at 50 cent fans who claim to love music, and you can't understand why someone is calling your beloved music a 4/4-uptempo-no-melody-or-variety-piece-of-shit.

I am actually pretty interested in what Loco listens to from genres i might find more appealing than deathmetal (just an example, i don't really enjoy classical music either)
Kind of having someone do the lazy work of filtering music for you while going through a LOT more songs/albums.

i recommend good things to people who recommend me good things as well, that's the beauty of last.fm. so if you are interested in that and listen to a decent amount of music on your pc or ipod, sign up, it's the best thing to discover great new music. i might not be the best person for your tastes but you will find a lot of people you share tastes with

if you're interested in what i listen to you can see it all on last.fm, but as for genres i listen to a lot of things ranging from pretty much all sorts of extreme metal(and this i know the most about, the rest i really am a hugeeeeee student of), classical, minimalism, jazz, ambient/dark ambient, drone/noise, progressive rock, psychedelic, post-rock, sludge/stoner rock, post-metal, post-punk, lotsssss of avant-garde and experimental music, some electronic stuff (mostly breakcore/idm) some folk and some blues, underground hip-hop and abstract hip-hop(some old school hip-hop as well but i'm quite difficult hip-hop wise), some hardcore, post-hardcore, grindcore, mathcore... yeah this sums up my interests atm

It occurred to me that I had something meaningful to contribute to this thread before I read Loco's post and decided to watch the fireworks...

I used to play pretty basic classical guitar and was starting to get fairly good with it (mostly technicals like fingering/endurance. Weak on the sheet-reading/songwriting bit). About 2-4 years before I kinda just got bored and started doing a lot of other stuff.

Seriously, if you want to play guitar, the best advice I can give you is to play. Don't bother with lessons if you're not used to learning that way: I know many guitarists who just love music (in the most general sense...) and became fairly skilled (by recreational standards) after a couple of years. Look up the tabs to songs or parts of songs you'd like to learn how to play. Start simple, etc. If you don't think you'd enjoy learning how to read music, don't for the time being. Have fun with tabs/experimenting and the rest will come.

Oh, and get in touch with friends who also like playing guitar or another instrument. Try shit out. 2nl is like trying to piece together your mangled representation of "Stairway to Heaven". 5nl is trying to play the solo in broken 3-note parts. Run with it. gl.

Think about all the great guitar plays and how they learnt....getting tabs from the internet....I don't think so (can you imagine Jimi Hendrix using a dodgy tab web site??). Ask any good player how they learnt and the chances are that they listened to a lot of stuff and worked out how to play what they liked on the guitar (or any other instrument for that matter). Everyone has some lessons and we all have to learn scales and stuff but developing your ear is what usually sets the good player apart. So as a first point, great guitarists learn by transcribing.

i wasn't going to reply anymore but i think this is somewhat interesting that you think it can be seen/compared this way

we have to realize not everything can be compared crown, but i will try to do with what you've given me here

try to see poker and texas hold em as what it is to gambling while what genres and subgenres are to music

the guy loves poker and will stay away from other sorts of gambling, he doesnt love gambling
someone likes rock n roll and will close his mind and stay away from anything unlike it, he doesnt love music

i cannot say the guy doesnt love poker when he tells me he does, but i can say he doesnt love music when he makes the mistake of saying he does but likes only one genre

i know it sounds really silly that i can say someone doesn't love music but doesn't it make sense to you given those examples and the way i think about music? that's the way i see it and you can clearly see how i see the word music and it's the only way i can present it to you with what you've given me here but i dont think it can be properly compared to poker

what we're talking about here is totally different than the examples of the person who listens to britney spears/tokio hotel and doesn't love music though... i think i have to mention it cuz it would be really confusing to mix up both.. that person simply doesnt understand at the point where she enjoys it that what she was fed isn't good music but in fact a manufactured scam that she fell for. and it doesn't make me an elitist or a snob because i'm aware of this, it makes me informed.

that's a pretty harsh statement

one's taste has always got to do with his experience (even his bodily functions one might add) Loco,so it can never truely be objective (you can have similar but never identical experience with someone).
Surely two huge literature fans will agree that Dan Brown sucks ass,but that doesn't mean for example that they'll agree on their best writer or best novel ever.
I think it's a bit more complicated than saying that the appreciation/evaluation of any form of art is truely objective and you just asked me to kill myself I believe
