Is taste in music subjective or objective? The question of the subjectivity of taste is of a philosophical nature. Unfortunately, it is far too complex to sufficiently explore here, but to briefly answer the question, there are good arguments for the objectivity of taste. It is assumed that taste is subjective because of the vast number of factors that must be taken into account when calculating it, but this is only an assumption. Taste is simply a recognition of quality, so when people claim that taste is subjective, what they are really saying is that 'quality' is subjective. Few people, however, would argue that the quality of a car or an athletic performance is subjective. This is because the criteria for judgment is very clear in those cases. If an effort was made to discover and structure all the factors that make up the quality of music (all the criteria) such as tone, pitch, chord progression, etc, then the objective quality of music could be recognized, and whether or not a person has good taste could be determined by comparing it to that objective quality. In simpler terms, if you define what constitutes quality, then you can use that to determine taste. Many would argue that quality is also subjective, but that is a hard argument to support logically.

Music seems to be the one topic where everybody think they are "entitled" to be an expert. As a musician, it annoys the crap out of me.

If you are tonedeaf, you obviously cant appreciate great music, and youre more likely to enjoy crappy music. BUT this doesnt make the crappy music better than the great music !! The great music is still great, its only the tonedeaf person's lack of training and abilities that makes him like crappy music. And then comes the tonedeaf guy raving about how great his crappy music is, and how retarded and boring the great music is. Or he says that music is purely subjective, as an "excuse" for liking crappy music.

To those who are tonedeaf of partially tonedeaf and listening to crap music, its possible to train your ear to more easily hear pitch changes, harmony, rhythms etc. You'll have to invest some time though (but it's well worth it). If you want to spend your time on other things and keep listening to crappy music, thats perfectly fine. But dont talk as if you know anything about music, cuz you dont. (and you'll never love music like musician does)
