My bets have gone straight out of the window. African teams are solid fighters, a lot more disciplined than I thought (except Cameroon, wtf?)
Few things that have shocked me so far -
BIH coming out 4-5-1 vs Nigeria when they NEED a win. Again one of these dubious tactical decisions, I'm not sure what the fuck is going on. Nigeria should have won bigger imo after the clusterfuck that was BIH defence. Džeko was unlucky to have a goal disallowed, it was clearly not offside but another refereeing fuck-up (seems to be the tone for majority of the games) - Nigeria still deserved the win.
Germany - Ghana was odd. Germany looked unorganized which is rare for Germany but all credit to Ghana, they took the fight to Germany. The weather clearly favours the south american/african teams. First time I saw Germans completely fucked after their game.
Italy looked shockingly bad. I have never seen so disheartened performance from Italy. All credit to Costa Rica though, switched off Pirlo and defensively looked super organized.
Managers can't adapt. It's been embarrassing to watch at times - it's more evident with big teams like Italy and Spain. Even to an extent, Brazil.
The weather is definitely more suitable for the African and South American teams, European teams look completely fucked after 70 minutes.
Most of my early bets are fucked, Belgium can break me even if they win. I've made some more bets along the way on scores etc so I'm not down awfully much.

I think the reason why Ghana looked so good against invincible looking Germany is just one simple factor...They outworked Germany in the midfield. Causing disruption in the midfield is what any elite team does...and Ghana can fit right in that category if they can keep up that same grueling tempo for the rest of the tourny. Not to mention that they have real quality throughout the field as well.
Same concept with Costa rica as well. Just look up the average distance Costa rica ran vs Italy. Work production is a very valuable statistic in seeing just how much a team can potentially produce in the midfield and offensively as well.
People often times overlook african teams...but nowadays the African cup winners aren't a joke anymore. They are a force to be rekoned with. Kinda like Concaf as well. (mexico holding their own vs BRAZIL. costa rica eating Uruguay AND Italy. And it was no fluke. expect them to make a scene in the knock out stages too) The level of play throughout the work is rising quite rapidly. We aren't going to just see European and South American dominance anymore. We are going to be seeing some "huge" underdogs take big games off the usual "elite" teams. We've slowly been seeing that more and more lately. And it's only going to get perpetuated as more counties become more wealthy etc. |

How are you guys interested in the world cup? I know this is like the biggest sport on earth. I watch it 20 minutes at a time on the elliptical while at the gym. I have yet to see a goal happen live. Just seems boringer than baseball. |

Couple of great bets imo:
Colombia +140 against Japan
France -113 against Ecuador
Switzerland -221 against Honduras is also pretty ok. |

I can't decide which is better USA +1/2 at +105 OR just straight +600 for the win vs germany...
I can't believe that US is 6 to 1 dogs to actually win this match. I wouldn't be surprised if this game looks similar to Germany Ghana.

There are reasons why they are considered that much of an underdog
1. USA need to secure at least a point to go through so they won't go all out
2. It's Germany they are playing. Germany is 2nd favorite to win the cup after Brazil... It's not because they screwed up one match vs Ghana that they aren't a good side anymore and not because USA drew 2-2 vs Portugal that suddenly they became Elite team in football. Germany beat Portugal 4-0 the first game (while US drew 2-2)
3. Germany surely don't want to finish 2nd of the group since they would face 1st of the other group in the last 16
4. Germans are Germans... They do the job.
Ivory Coast (vs Greece) and Colombia (vs Japan) are pretty decent bets I think.
France (vs Ecuador) also a good bet. |
