WOOOHAH by WilsWils, February 18

Ever since i've gotten my new job at telus i've found that i'm just wayyyy too fucking tired to do anything when i get home (mentally) and it's totally affected my game. I've decided to withdraw my 3k bankroll from FTP, deposit like 600$ on PS, and just grind that on the side while using the rest of the BR to play live with DIRELEIF (hi lo master) AND PHILROCKS123 (emo poker player). I've just gotten tired of internet poker and my play reflects that ._.

I'll be finishing off the rest of this month on FTP and just get silver medal for iron man, use the points and buy some random shit from the FTP store (Altho that'd affect the 300$ rb check id be getting..hmmm)

Gl all, and farewell FTP next month <3

Halfway through the month. by RebuyFoolAA, February 18

Okay, so we are more than halfway through the month but I thought I would post some updates of my month and year so far. I played around 3k hands today and broke even. Pretty happy with my play overall today. I quit when I needed a break, came back strong and finished the day off decently. I played a couple hands of interest today so I will post those as well. Hope everyone is enjoying success at the tables and that you all are running hot and playing well.

Today:

Now on to the hands from today:

1.Standard Cooler
2.I Never Fold
3.I Think I Played This Okay
4.Fun To Run Into People's Top Range
5.I Played This Bad But Am Never Folding Anyhow

Now for the most interesting hand of today I think.

6.Should I Fold Or Should I Call Now

UB is shitting on me these days by Oddeye, February 18

I know I'm not really down that much at all but I am fucking sick of losing every god damn all-in/pot. My training course as barely started and I find myself so stressed I cannot even read a single book without wanting to go back to poker or want to leave the place. I've had so many negative emotions in my life lately and an increasing desire to use violence and drugs. It's def linked to poker but it's not the whole picture, I don't work hard at all compared to other people and I'm pretty lazy. Break do me no good, I tried but was thinking about it even more, if I could just have a couple months free I would be able to get myself together but things are going fast now. I know I'll beat it at some point and keep going up... It's more that I'm bad within myself and I feel painful in almost every situation and I want it to be done. I really wish I'd be able to be happy without having to do drugs (and quitting won't help) - its just ive been smoking for 4-5yrs and just wasted from it, it's fine when I can sleep but now I've no time to sleep I have to wake at like 6.

Ok rant done -_- and off sniffing some stuff (dont worry not doing the stuff too much)

i've hit a little wall by whamm!, February 18

cards and spots have been not really great lately, dropped like 7bi the past weekend. put some money in some other site and won 2bi there, but i think too much poker has caused my game to deteriorate a little lately. i think ill be taking a break and look for angles to make it fun again to play. my supernova race must be put on hold atm, coz honestly im getting sick of looking at stars software and tables lol. i have 40k vpp atm and i think by april i can get to supernova for sure. peace.

shortstacking thoughts by traxamillion, February 18

So im reading 2+2 threads about hated shortstackers and they are talking about the "best" shortstackers etc. which got me thinking this morning in the shower.

Everyone always talks about how they are unexploitable etc etc annoying and thats fine but I never really thought about why and if i could understand it it would also help me with my deepstacked game. NOONE will ever discuss the details of shortstacking or WHY its profitable just that it is so I am attempting to figure it out for myself (and not because I want to do it I have fun playing full and want to have solid deepstacked skills in the event that i have to switch to live poker at some point. You can find me posting more in the hand discussion forums than actually playing because I just like to understand the game)

I kinda just assumed they played tight doubled up shoving a tighter range pre than laggy fuller stacks who called them incorrectly (this does acct for some of their winrate im sure but not all of it)

A lot of their winrate must also come from steals and I think this is what makes them hard to beat (I was wondering why imsakidd ran like 16/16 in a datamine i saw - that seemed pretty loose for a range of hands to profitably get it AI preflop with but I realized hes not always ai often going to be opening but then folding). The same as a fullstack will be opening a wide range late so can a shortstack. just like a fullstack can fold to a 3bet so can the shortstack. The difference is it will almost always be incorrect to CALL the 20bb stack because you never really have implied odds unless i guess you are trapping a SS (which i havent given much thought to yet). A shortstack can also effectively resteal via 3bet preflop the same as a fullstack but in many cases will actually have more FE because there are no implied odds due to a 20bb SS 3bet being a shove.

A shortstack then gets to the flop sometimes if called (say shortstack opens co button flats or button and bb flat - dunno how often that should happen) at which point i guess they can just look at pot odds, put their opponent on a range of hands and decide whether or not they have enough equity to get it in or not.

It seems to me that shortstacking breaks the game down into a math problem by leaving out true postflop decisions. A shortstack can easily exploit a fullstack who doesn't adjust but even if a fullstack adjusts to the shortstack if the shortstack is playing right the shortie and the full will be breakeven vs each other.

The variance might be rougher in terms of "buyins" because winrate is lower than that of a good fullstack but in terms of bb im not confident that the swings are any worse because at the end of days you are still getting the same card distribution. -variance is due to winrate so if a shorty wins at 4bb/100 and a fullstack wins at 4bb/100 they should have comparable swings i guess it might just SEEM worse for the shortstack.

Seems like when battling a shortstacker it is kinda gay because you have to beat them at their own game since all you really have is pre and maybe 1 other street. You tighten up too much and you give up too much but if you don't then you play too loose and give away too much.

At the same time im sure its hard for a shortstacker to play optimally. shortstacking is simpler but still doesn't seem as easy to me as a lot of people try to make it out to be because you still have to be pretty good at deducing handranges etc.

And i see how if they got rid of ratholing it wouldnt really work.

I could be totally off the mark on all of this but it seems to make sense and explains why some SS are considered good while others aren't.

Being Tested by k2o4, February 18

February has been a bad month and I've wanted to just give up at so many things at so many different times in so many different ways... heh. It started with about 10 really hard days of moving into a new place with my GF. What made it especially hard was that we'd been crashing at the rents place since coming here from India, so we basically had clothes and a bed to move into a 2 bedroom apartment, which meant there was a lot of stuff we had to buy. Of course we had a very small budget and therefore spent a lot of time on Craigslist hunting for bargains. They were long days and I didn't play any poker, and the stress of moving caused a few fights which just compounded the misery.

Then we finally get pretty much settled and I start playing poker again and go into the worst downswing of my career. I've had 2 winning sessions this month out of 20,000 hands played. The losing sessions are getting smaller but I think that's more because of the help I've been getting from LP members on hands that has enabled me to plug some leaks in my game. The luck definitely hasn't turned around though.

And to top it all, off, I got deathly sick with what feels like strep throat. Fever, runny nose, a horrible cough and a sore throat that completely immobilizes me at times. Last night after losing another session and then running to the bathroom cause I was coughing so hard that I started to puke, I felt like giving up. I just wanted to throw in the towel. But then I caught myself being a bitch and decided I'd use all of this BS being thrown my way as a reason to keep going, cause I wasn't going to let it beat me. So I went and posted more hands, reviewed my losses, and studied a bit more poker, and then hung out with the GF and had a good time (wink wink).

But seriously, it's easy to be positive and happy during the good times, but the real skill is to enjoy life during the bad times. I've honestly been getting spoiled lately cause my health has been good, I've had a great relationship, I've been doing the work I wanna do, kicking ass at poker, and everything else was basically going well. Yet I wasn't as happy as I should be, and any little thing going wrong and I'd get upset. I was chasing happiness always thinking "once I do this I will be happy" rather than just being happy in the moment and appreciating what I had. Losing a big chunk of my BR, my health and so much of my usual peace of mind has reminded me how good I had it, and how good I STILL have it.

About a year ago I was so good about taking a bad situation and finding the silver linining. I was great at seeing something go bad and laughing at it and moving on to a solution quickly. I really believed that when one door is closed on you, another door is opened, but most of us spend too much time staring at the door that closed to see the one that opened. I've been staring at closed doors lately and missing all the new paths and great things that have opened up to me. It's really bad and I'm sad to see how much joy I've given up over the last few months.

So I'm not giving up at poker. This is without a doubt the hardest downswing I've ever faced and has tested my confidence to the bone, but I am not giving up. I am not going to tilt it all away. I am going keep opening up the tables and making the best decisions I possibly can, and eventually it's all gonna turn around in my favor again. I know it will. And even though I'm losing left and right, I'm going to enjoy my life. Cause things WILL work out. And things WILL get better. And things aren't really that bad anyways - I've got a lot of things to be happy about.

I know I keep doing this, but I really don't think I could do it enough: BIG THANKS to everyone who has helped me in hands that I post or who has posted encouragement in this blog. You guys have all helped me fight through this downswing and I think I'd be in a much worse place right now without the LP.net support. Sorry I haven't been helping you guys so much or posting in your blogs, but I will and I'll try to be there for you when you hit a downswing too. <3

Omaha by LostDevil, February 18

I decided to switch it up and play low stakes omaha. The games are really soft but thats really not why I switched. Holdem is just way too boring at low stakes and I can't put in the necessary amount of hands needed day after day to grind my way up when its just not fun. I also don't really have the time tbh and I don't want to play out of my roll.

The reason I don't find it fun is that the thought process is just so limited at lowstakes and at times I find myself overthinking way to many hands and assuming my opponents even have the slightest clue as to how to play poker.

The problem lies in the fact that I like to think about hands and not just play like a robot constantly, thats just no fun. So since im completely new to Omaha I get to spend more time thinking since I have 4 cards in my hand instead of two and really think out how the hand will develop etc....

I was reading around 2p2 one day and I saw a quote that I found helpful. It basically said that you should spend over twice the time studying the game than you spend playing it when you are new. I found this to be helpful and my knowledge of poker has grown tremendously over the past month but i guess I'm too lazy to mechanically nutpeddle microstakes vs holdumz donks.

Oh well, any good Omaha players on here? I might start posting some hands. I hear 40buyins is the standard rule since variance is crazy. However its just so soft at the microstakes i might move up a little quicker. Any good tips to keep in mind to help progress as an Omaha player over time?

Oh I just flopped a straight flush while typing this. Good sign?

and some aesop rock

Takin a break by JYang, February 18

poker has been goin pretty decent, reached my 10k$/month mark last night.

i probably cant play poker this week as i have an exam coming up this week in some law class im taking. O M F G. since im studyin i thought i might as well as catch up in my other class which im way behind.

also im gettin a new pc when the geforce9 comes out this week!!

i think the high end gaming geforce9 costs around $400 range and has 30-50% performance increase to the current 8800ultra. definitely a good deal. i now deciding between an overclocked cpu or non overclocked cpu... hmm stuff like 3ghz qx cost like $1k+, but qx6600 which is cheap overclocked to 3.2 or 3.4ghz rapes it and costs like $200ish? it might decrease the life of the cpu but meh. just get a new one when it dies prolly. =]

I need to move to a site with rakeback and some other nice features would be a bonus but mainly rakeback

has anyone payed for cardrunners through pokerstars?

I also need pahud but I got no creditcard/paypal so how can I go about paying for that

CASHED OUT:-) by ReSpOnSe, February 18

well i had been playing 50nl for maybe a week and had brought it up to about 1450 when i went on a bad downswing, I lost 200 the first session, the ended up losing 400 more in a 4 hour session i played and decided to cash all my money except for 10 dollars out, i still ended up with $850 profit from a starting a 30 bucks, I moved $80 to FTP and i left $10 on stars and i'll probably try to grind it back up, I decided i couldn't handle the downswings of 50nl so it'll probably be a long time before i ever attempt it againl. I didn't want to be another random kid who lost all his moneyz in one night and i felt the best way to avoid this was cashing out

Life decisions by twotimesopt, February 18

I graduated w/ my bachelor's last May. I was accepted into a Ph.D. program and started last fall. I was also given a teaching fellowship, which is very nice - free tuition, monthly stipend for living expenses, free health insurance, etc. My plan was to get my Ph.D. and eventually become a professor. I enjoy academia, and I've also really enjoyed teaching (as a TA) since I started grad school.

However, recently I have been not so motivated for school. I think that I would be happier if I lived off poker and possibly some freelance web design on the side. I started playing poker seriously in late 2006, and made somewhere around $35-40k in 2007. I was in school in the spring and fall, and played a lot during the summer, after cashing out most of my roll to buy a truck and starting over at low stakes.

I have about $25k to my name right now. I am thinking about quitting school and taking a shot at "going-pro" (or whatever - i.e., living off profits from poker). I know that a lot of LPers have been in a similar spot, and basically I'm just looking for any thoughts or insight about this decision from people who have been here before.

Thanks.

update by collegesucks, February 17

Still 10NL

18/14/4 (too nitty?)

1.18BB/100 over 2800 hands..

my biggest leak by far is having pockets vs. higher pockets against people with whom I've played a couple of tumultuous hands a few hands back =(

other than that, I'm focusing on figuring out villain's ranges, evaluating flop texture for cbets, and picking up free chips from limpers, 3bet timing etc...

i signed up for grinderschool.com too =D

note: metagame at 10NL is probably nil

Tennis, GH and Poker by RaSZi, February 17

I have no recollection of what I did on thursday. I think I played guitar hero till like 6 am and then passed out. Anyways on with friday. I woke up around 1 pm by alarm, cause I had to pick up my car. I forgot to mention earlier someone busted the right front window of my car. Pretty nice. They left my 350$ Bose headphones, remote controles tv screens in car, everything. I mean if you're gonna fuck my car up, at least steal some shit so it makes sense. Anyways, I'm happy a brainless retarded just wanted to destroy something that night and never thought about making a living while doing just that. I left my car, mainly because of laziness, in a kind of desolated place. I had some trouble with my car alarm and I had to let an engineer look at it. Anyways, they took it to the garage and everything was fixed, so I went to pick it up.

Overall Friday was a sucky day, until the evening. I had a homegame in Rotterdam and it was crazy fun. It was pretty small stakes, but it reminded me how fun poker can be. They were inexperienced players but all very intelligent people, absorbing everything they could... and also wanted to do so. That last fact reminded me of the Eye of the tiger. I know it's kinda lame to quote Rocky movies, but it's true. I'm fighting fucking Clubber Lang and I lost the eye of the tiger. I need to get it back and since that game I'm confident I will. The night was fun, I met new people and I got back my fun in poker. There are more ways to making a living, I dunno if I can do it as baller as this guy though:

The homegame inspired me so much, I went straight to playing when I came back home. 40 Hour sessions are pretty normal these days, so I had a ton of stamina left. I played a bit on betfair again, which only added to my new motivation, cause a change of software has that kind of effect on me. I played some 2.5$/5$ and I loved playing there again. Software is insanely fast and I like the bet pot buttons :D. I switched over back to pokerstars because there hardly is action at night on euro sites. I started playing 3-6 and I saved some hands this time to put in my blog.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/386113

Not to diss on Pillars, I like him a lot and he's a good player, but this hand is important from the session. I haven't been reviewing my play enough lately, so when I started doing so, I discovered something huge. Some lines I take always with the same holdings. For instance, I would hardly ever checkraise bluff the river. That is gonna destroy my game, especially in games with a ton of regulars like 3-6 on ps. So i decided to get funky with it a couple times in hands and this was one example.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/386210

Another point of criticism. I play too cautiously in 3-bet pots pre heads up. I noticed I have a lot of trouble vs people who play actively in 3-bet pots heads up. So i decided to go full throttle this session and again balance out my range better, because this is a line i would def take with AQ+ hu. It will make me less predictable in heads up matches and definitely improve the 3-bet part of my hu game.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/386152

This is just a random 4-bet preflop pot with Aces. It was the biggest pot of the night, and a perfect spot for me. I had a lot of history with the regulars this session. I went from playing tight slightly passive to really lag in the same session and then slowed down again.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/386238

Ok this pot is just kinda insane. I 4-bet preflop here, since we're deep and he was 3-betting me regularly. I know he is gonna call my flopbet a ton of the time, so i fired a second barrel on the turn. Little did I know I was valuebetting thinly. It results in a 3,5 buy-in pot, with shitty holdings, kind of funny pot. When he snappushed turn and his hand opened on the river I was searching the board what he had, cause I was sure I was beat without improvement. Funny hand, and this one is from the superlag period.

Guitar hero

Lets start of with one of the best music video's in history:

I remember crying laughing when my mom saw this video aired for the first time on dutch tv. I don't know a lot of Tenacious D music, but I'm sure i'll find out more. I love their 'The Metal' as well. Anyways I got the 350,000$ plus achievement in guitar hero. You have to earn over 350,000$ over different careers. It takes some time, but I got it. Ow I also re-gotten that 500,000 point achievement!!! I did it on the same German song as I did when I played Evelyn online, but this time I got it in single player. So I received it. The other failure from that session was also made fact when I 100% fc'd My Name Is Jonas, but this time in career, so I have the 5 golden stars behind it. Holllaaaaa. Props to Evelyn for also getting the 500k achievement in single player. She is sick good at rhythm songs, so im not surprised.

There was another kinda of like rhythm game brought out today. It's called audiosurf and read about it on a starcraft website. It's not so much playing an instrument like guitar hero or rockband, but it's moving a plane on music.. here's a sample vid.

OMG YOU DIDNT EXPECT DID YOU NOW.

This is a more normal song though, maybe the hottest song in gaming right now lol?

Anyways in GH Im still struggling with raining blood, but Im getting better and better at mosh 1. I really wanna learn it the right way and not luckbox my way through it and finish the song. I can tell im improving a lot at guitar hero, just by playing that bit over and over.

Plans for upcoming days

This week the ABN Amro tennis tournament starts. It's been ages since I last watched any of the matches. This week is the last pro-performance of Raemon Sluiter. He has been great for Dutch tennis so I'm definitely gonna check out his match. I hope to be able to watch some others as well, should be mad fun. I'll try to play as much poker as I can this time. I didn't feel like it last couple weeks, but like I said, my fun returned, now give me tigereye and leaderchip in a big tourney and I'll be ready to own you bitches.

OHH!!! Before I forget I was gonna do an update on sidebets:

My bet is coming along great. I'll ask Victor (Nazgul18) to contact support and verify I've been keeping to the deal for those that might not be satisfied with my word alone. Sometimes I'm longing to play higher, but I have to keep to it.

I also have a new bet with Elky. It's kind of a funny bet, because we both don't work out all that much, but we bet who can bench press more on day 1 of the WSOP Main event. It's about a single push, so who can push the most in that 1 single push. Elky has the bet with a couple people, so I hope he is not too motivated, but he just won 2 million, so I think I have an edge in this one. I doubt I'll work out for it though.

Ow and props to Jay Kwik for making his Bellagio bathroom bet. He came out unscathed after a 30 day imprisonment. So cool he won.

Ok hope u liked it again.. cya
