I graduated w/ my bachelor's last May. I was accepted into a Ph.D. program and started last fall. I was also given a teaching fellowship, which is very nice - free tuition, monthly stipend for living expenses, free health insurance, etc. My plan was to get my Ph.D. and eventually become a professor. I enjoy academia, and I've also really enjoyed teaching (as a TA) since I started grad school.

However, recently I have been not so motivated for school. I think that I would be happier if I lived off poker and possibly some freelance web design on the side. I started playing poker seriously in late 2006, and made somewhere around $35-40k in 2007. I was in school in the spring and fall, and played a lot during the summer, after cashing out most of my roll to buy a truck and starting over at low stakes.

I have about $25k to my name right now. I am thinking about quitting school and taking a shot at "going-pro" (or whatever - i.e., living off profits from poker). I know that a lot of LPers have been in a similar spot, and basically I'm just looking for any thoughts or insight about this decision from people who have been here before.

Thanks.

similar spot. i turned down my scholarship for grad school to take fulltime job and to play poker on the side.

depends what u like really, if u think u can survive the gayness and stress of poker then its prob best to play poker professionally. But i chose to accept a high paid fulltime job plus play like 50k hands a month instead.

Stable income, less stress, meet other young hardworking people.~~

academia is lame imo~

consider poker coaching income too.
specifically, coaching me.

if u only have 25K to your name and are going to consider going pro... unless u live with ur parents and don't have to pay rent and the likes then you should be playing much lower than 3/6

Living from poker by playing whole day long in your dark room like a complete idiot is not living at all, even if you gain money.

Life is not only about money, it's great to master something and to gain money with it, but you should not quit everything for it. Or atleast I wont.

I know I'm happy to have a full time job, and I also do play poker in my free time.

I would turn into a complete freak if I would quit my job, and live the rest of my life in my room playing on my pc to gain some cash.

Live is all about meeting people, learning alot of new stuff, etc etc. not just about numbers.

i'd want to have at least 50k base before making a dramatic decision like this...

20k downswings arent uncommon once you're in 3/6-5/10-10/20 land and playing shorthanded etc.

but I'm not doing this for poker. I would do it because of the freedom that poker offers. Poker's fun, but I don't want to play it for 8 hours a day. The reason that this plan is attractive to me is because of the freedom it offers. I really like to travel and that's nearly impossible when you are in school and doing research. So the idea is to have poker as a source of funding, but also spend a significant amount of time on other things (i.e., traveling, my hobbies, web design, coaching, etc.).

I would probably initially adopt a 40 BI rule, which would make me rolled for 2/4. It seems like it should be very easy to make a steady income playing 2/4, as there are always tons of games and significantly more fish than at 3/6+. This also means fewer and less and dramatic swings.
