Gates $10B Donation

(Jan. 29) -- In the largest donation yet by his private charitable foundation, Bill Gates has announced he'll donate $10 billion for the development of new vaccines and their distribution in developing countries.

"We must make this the decade of vaccines," Gates said in a statement. "Vaccines already save and improve millions of lives in developing countries. Innovation will make it possible to save more children than ever before."

Gates and his wife, Melinda, called upon businesses and international governments to add to the contribution, which they estimate could save the lives of 7.6 million children under the age of 5 by 2019. Among the vaccines they hope to develop and distribute are those for malaria and tuberculosis, ailments that have been all but eradicated in the U.S. but still plague poorer nations.

Bill and Melinda Gates, here Friday at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, announced a $10 billion donation to develop and distribute new vaccines to poor countries. It is the largest donation from the couple's charitable foundation.

The World Health Organization is enthusiastically behind the initiative, with Margaret Chan, head of the WHO, calling it "unprecedented."

Global health is one of the priorities of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, but this new donation eclipses its average health-related donations of years past -- about $800 million annually, which approaches the total yearly budget for the United Nations' WHO.

The $10 billion donation is being lauded by the international community, but a 2007 investigation by the Los Angeles Times concluded that the Gates' international medical aid was actually putting children at risk. At the time, efforts to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria led to highly specialized medical training and a subsequent shortage of basic-care doctors. In turn, more children died of common ailments like sepsis and diarrhea.

The disproportionate focus on certain illnesses has also meant that resources were diverted away from basic needs, like clean water and food, which, ironically, are necessary for the proper digestion of AIDS medications provided by the foundation's dollars.

And while there's no doubt that more money, and more attention, are fundamentally important in saving the lives of vulnerable children, health experts have cautioned against over-celebrating large-scale donations like this one.

Dr. Peter Poore, a pediatrician who works as a consultant to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), one of the overseas health operatives that's received Gates money in the past, warned that overstating the impact of donor programs can actually stall foreign health care. "They can also do dangerous things," he told the Times. "They can be very disruptive to health systems -- the very things they claim they are trying to improve."

No matter how many vaccines the foundation pays for, its aid isn't sustainable unless it also pays to train foreign doctors and equip a nation's hospitals and medical centers. Dr. Tadataka Yamada, president of the Gates Foundation's global health program, has said that its money can only be "a catalyst" and urged African governments to fill the gaps. But with even doctors in Africa succumbing to AIDS, the narrow focus of the Gates Foundation might only compound the problem.

With an endowment exceeding $35 billion, there's no doubt that Gates and his family will be in the business of donations for years to come. Surely, those billions will save lives. But with a philanthropist who advocates "recognition as an added incentive" for generosity, here's hoping that countries on the receiving end can - somehow - do what's needed behind the scenes to take that money and make sustainable changes.

This. He has spent years looking at how to best use the money of the Bill and Linda Gates foundation. It's not like one day he woke up and said, "Fuck it i'll donate a lazy 10bill to some shit today". He is a thinking man and has the money and time to look at certain problems like this on a big picture scale as well as at an individual level. I doubt many people in the world can compare with his level of understanding of the situation least of all a singular pediatrician.

So overpopulation is never a problem? If an unlimited amount of people are sharing a limited amount of ressources, more people equals less for the individual. What if the developing world already surpassed the number of individuals their food production can sustain, would health and prosperity make any difference?

There are still many places in south east asia where if farmers read a book they would learn how to get their crops to grow 3 times as much produce by calorie but they don't... why, because there is no pressure to. There is no need, they don't care. Pressure leads to innovation. Starving people are not a result of over population or the inability to supply people. It is the result of the poorest people not having the means.

If you put everyone in the world together. They would fit in the grand canyon. If you put everyone in texas and put them in 4 person families they would all have 100 square meters. Imagine if u create a 2nd floor, then u get 200sq meters, if u have 10 story apartments ... now we're living in luxury... and only in texas.

Anyone quick to judge and anyone who doles out spiteful comments are or spin arguments in a judgemental manner when they haven't even taken 10 minutes to do some research about the validity of what they are saying... but they keep talking like they have conviction... these people, should be ashamed of themselves. It is so easy to say "I want to save the world" but sadly it is not always possible, sometimes avoiding the tough questions will leave an even worse situation. Stating that overpopulation isnt a problem is rediculous, why do you think china has a one child policy? Some countries have too many people to support already and the problem is only going to get worse.

Overpopulation does not depend only on the size or density of the population, but on the ratio of population to available sustainable resources. I doubt we can keep on doubling the crop yields every 40-50 years like we double the world population.

What!? How did we ever start talking about overpopulation in this thread? Well anyways here's a couple points. People in under developed countries have large families because the survival rate for new-born children is low so of course couples in under developed countries will try to have as more children compared to a developed nation couple. By improving the overall health of an under developed country, survival rates will start to increase, and couples will worry less about trying to have a lot of children. Another point is that overpopulation is not really a problem when it comes to the limited amount of resources we have. If we truly want to create a sustainable world we have to all have to consume less as individuals and consume more efficiently. This means not buying so much junk and eating so much food. If everyone lived like a typical American, it would take 3 earths to support the whole entire human race.

If we truly want to create a sustainable world we have to all have to consume less as individuals and consume more efficiently. This means not buying so much junk and eating so much food. If everyone lived like a typical American, it would take 3 earths to support the whole entire human race.

Yeah cause its not like it has anything to do with religion/tradition, as soon as people get rich they stop having kids, it like a natural law. If we share the ressources between an ever increasing amount of people, one day everyone will die from lack of food. It basic biology, it happens in nature all the time, when a species grow to big for the habitat to support, many die from lack of food or diseases.

The problem with "overpopulation" isn't that 'zomg we're going to run out of natural resources' or 'zomg we're going to crowd the earth until we all have 1 square meter to live on.' The problem is that when you start having 5+ children to one family, that's a lot of mouths to feed and that's a lot of work to be done which means the children are going to have to start working instead of going to school. Also the more children you have, the less resources you can spare for each one's education so maybe only 1-2 if any of the kids will be able to go to school. Typically it's the role of the children to care for the parents when they become elderly since there's no retirement homes to do so. It definitely contributes to the cycle of poverty but I think it's common sense that they have that many children because they are poor. They aren't poor because they have that many children.

I think the main problem with overpopulation is this: If everyone on earth does the "american dream", having a car, spending like crazy, etc, there is no doubt that the earth cannot handle 10 billions people like (we would have big environnements problems).

Bill Gates has probably thought about this stuff before doing this, but i'm one of the people who doesn't see why this is the best way to spend 10 billions of charities money. I think the most important thing at the moment is fixing environnement problems. no matter how many life we save by various charities, if everyones dies in 70 years because of pollution....

the future of the planet is pretty much a gamble, in order to solve sustainability for the increasing population and growing economies(chinese being the major one), we need technological advancements. If we help out the shit countries in africa, cure diseases ect. we increase the speed of technological advancement but we also increase the amount of global consumption.
