I dont think its really important, the point of the rule and even more so after the recent change of two arms isnt to see if he was scratching the octagon with his nails, it was supposed to stop playing around with the rule and that was exactly what Chris was doing, he wasnt downed, he was just trying to not get kneed.

If any of you need clarification on what is considered a grounded fighter, you can skip to 3:30 of the video and listen to the official rules as provided by John McCarthy.

weidman tells them he cant continue before he finds out it was ruled as a legal knee after watching the replay, then talks about how he can fight after a 3 minute break
If you get hit with a brutal illegal strike that rocked you, I think it's fair to not want to continue if you think it puts you at a massive disadvantage, even if you could possibly continue.
If it were illegal like the ref said and Weidman and his corner thought, would you be calling Weidman stupid if he decided to continue and got TKO'd soon after?
Fighting after getting rocked by an illegal strike seems kinda stupid to me, even if you are capable of continuing. It puts you at a huge disadvantage.
Did you watch the video? He was making low-blow gestures to the ref less than a minute before the knee, Weidman was gassing and eating a lot of punches, he was panicking and looking for any way out to catch his breath
I think its crazy to question his heart honestly. The dude had Rockhold mounted on him for like 7 minutes raining down one of the most vicious beatings I've seen in MMA and Weidman never stopped fighting for position despite being gassed there too. He also gassed in the 4th round of the Machida fight and Machida was pouring it on him, landing tons of good shots, and he just weathered the storm and came back and won the 5th round.
I agree he was gassed and getting beat up, but Weidman is tough as shit and has heart for days. Being on a 2 fight losing streak I'm not gonna fault him for deciding to not continue after what he thought was an illegal strike that rocked him, I don't think it was him looking for a way out as much as not wanting to take the massive risk of continuing and getting TKO'd. I guess that could be considered looking for a way out, but I think it was him not wanting to risk being at a massive disadvantage more so than him just wanting to give up or looking for a way to cheat a win.
