Main event coming up again and I'm definitely going to play. Hopefully can make a slightly deeper run than last year (196). I'm looking to sell about half my action. You guys let me know what you think is a reasonable markup. I'll take the best offer.

Real hard to say. If you play your B game or better and dont punt unneccessarily id say 1.4:1

But ive watched a few of your videos and read your write up last year, you do get more aggro in spots raising turns with weak draws and pounding rivers which increases chances of busting vs stationy players. I dunno what is exactly best in an mtt cause you will pile up chips sometimes and other times bust day 1 in spots where other good players wouldnt. Either way you have a big roi though. Gl

Daut    United States. May 27 2014 12:51. Posts 8955

this is the main event. it gets 6000 people and has a ridiculously slow structure.... i would sell myself at 1.4:1, and marshall is a much better/tougher NL player than me. i just have a bit more experience in mtts and am better short, but im unconvinced my low variance style is better than his for the main. i mean really marshall might be one of those freaks with a 200% ROI cause hes tough as shit. who knows though, 1.4:1 is very safe.

one drop gets 50 people, 90% of whom are super tough and the structure is very fast. not even remotely comparable

1.4 is not that much tbh for a live event that soft as the ME.

to be honest i could probably sell myself at 1.6:1. i know some players that do and sell easily. but i think its unfair to investors

Well you know, the guy who is asking isnt the crazy one, but the one paying the price. But it wouldnt be so unfair imo, its just crazy soft and super deep.

lol @ main event. Last time I played live this ugly girl was bragging about how she bought into WSOP ME. Pretty sure she lives in a shitty 1 bedroom apartment with her cat, and she somehow scraped up 10k to buy in, lasted 3 days I think she said. She's like "I always wanted to sit at those tables, so I said why not, YOLO!". I'd buy all of Marshall's action if I could afford it.

bye now

thanks for all that ... i think those types of turn raise spots are really not that good against people who aren't good players. the field is so weak that i remember a few spots that i actually overplayed my hands on the flop then had to fold 2 pair on the turn (this happened more than once i recall). so i would say my style is probably more similar to yours in that i just try to play low variance and not make any big mistakes, get my hands in good and just hope they hold.

the biggest mistakes i made last year had to do with 3bet bluffing too much with blockers pre. i remember multiple spots where i would 3bet a utg open w/ stuff like KQo then fired two bets when i couldn't get guys to fold even JJ on low-ish boards. this year i'm going to avoid playing pots in these spots and play much tighter preflop. i think i lost a lot of chips last year doing that--so much that i could have lasted til maybe the top 100 by just folding every hand.

ITT low stakes cash players try to educate an experienced MTT player and backer on what markup is fair in the WSOP main event.

dont mean to be a dick with this comment, but come on lol. has anyone who said 1.4 is absurd even played the main event before?

i'm not pressuring anyone to buy at 1.4. i was just looking for offers.

i definitely want to do well and there's nothing that would stop me from wanting to do the best i possibly can for myself (particularly since i'll have at minimum half my action). i'd feel absolutely stupid for wasting my own time.

Daut    United States. May 29 2014 14:14. Posts 8955

careface, a while back i wrote down the names of 164 good and very good pros who have played the main event. i then added up then # of times they played the main event and their total cashes. i purposefully left off some players like duhamel and joseph cheong because i felt like they would have never reached an ok level had they not done well in the main event. also left off greg merson. and left off all years before 2005. just a different tournament in a different time. took the hachem series to 2012, 8 years of WSOP main events. i actually had 0 WSOP main event winners on the list. i didnt want people screwing up the numbers. i basically only included final table players like matusow, ivey, cunningham, ben lamb, the grinder. i didnt even include michael binger in this list.

results?
955 main events, 170 cashes, ROI 196%

sure this includes guys like ivey and negreanu who likely have 500% ROIs over many of those years, but very good players do have big ROIs in the main event. the tournament is too slow, too deep and too many fish not to.

now, suppose we have a very good player in an online tournament. ill take myself cause i dont want to talk about anyone else. lets say i am selling action to the sunday 100 rebuy on stars. it gets about 900 people, has a bunch of good players and a bunch of terrible fish. i would guess that my ROI in this tournament is about 30%. just based on the feel of how soft it is. since its an online tournament and it costs me virtually nothing to enter it, i think a fair selling price to it would be 1.1:1.

in the main event, with many more players and a much better structure, i think my ROI is likely in the 75-100% range. some would say higher, but i think they are a bit delusional. but if i were to play the main event id have to drive to vegas, stay in a hotel, not play online those long hours....the cost is rather high. so while the profits of an online tournament should be split much more fairly, and maybe even a little in the favor of the backer, the profits of a live tournament should mostly go to the horse. i think 1.5:1 is a completely fair markup to sell at for someone with a 75-100% ROI in the main event.

there is A LOT that factors into this markup. more than you would consider for a 1500 prelim or an online tournament. for a 1500 prelim id sell at 1.3:1. but the main event...i mean fuck, if i make day 3 and dont cash i HAVE TO BE IN VEGAS FOR AT LEAST 6 DAYS. its really absurd the cost of playing it.

im ignoring the discussion about marshall's drinking and lack of focus during the tournament. just speaking about very good players with pretty good ROIs getting the majority of their expected profit in a long tournament with high monetary and time costs to the player but not the backers.

for someone who has it so great, most would think you'd spend your time focusing on that rather than wasting your time trying to convince everyone how much better you have it.

i'm lucky to be in a good situation, i wouldn't have the audacity to try to rub that in others' faces especially if they weren't as lucky as me. i guess you don't really care about anything or anyone but yourself though.

everything you said there is pretty huge exaggeration. regardless, the big difference is, this is my blog. i don't go and post any of this stuff anywhere else, you aren't required to read it. if someone sends you a link, that doesn't mean you are required to come post your negative opinions on it.

have you ever seen me post a comment in your blog? if i read someone's blog and don't like it, i ignore it. if i end up making a comment, it's almost always positive. you seem to have this need to come and try to perpetuate your negative mindset every time you post--it's really not appreciated.
