Bump. I'd like this to get as much exposure as possible in the next 24h. Thank you very much for the donations and also the kind words.

Hi,

I come to you all today in an attempt to help a friend. He's a musician from my hometown, and her wife gave birth to twin girls four years ago. Unfortunately one of the girls, Marina, had an infection in the hospital which caused a respiratory arrest. As a consequence of that, nowadays she has cerebral palsy, a disease which prevents her from doing basic things that any normal child should be able to do on her own, like sitting, eating, among other things which I'm unaware of.

Now they are trying to take little Marina to China, to have her treated with stem-cells. The treatment is very expensive ($40,000) and way out of their pockets, so they are making some kind of campaign to raise funds to try to give their daughter a better life. The treatment will take place in an institution named Beike Biotech in China (http://www.beikebiotech.com), and here is Marina's certificate of acceptance , meaning she got accepted for the treatment. Marina has a blog which keeps us updated on what's going on with the campaign. Right now they have 25% of the money and are trying to make some events to raise more money. Yesterday they hosted a beneficiary dinner, for example.

Local newspapers and TV shows are also helping them, as you can see in the spoiler below:

I know everyone has their own problems to worry about, and that there are millions of other children suffering and starving out there. But this guy is a friend and I really want to help him.

Any kind of donation would be helpful, even if its just a dollar. If you feel comfortable with it, please send your donation to raid1611 (João Pessoa), which is my account, on PokerStars and drop me a PM. You can also help her via my paypal account, antonielmjr@gmail.com. If you are brazilian, please visit her blog (link below) and do it as you wish . I will deposit all the money into their bank account and send the deposit receipt to each person who made a donation.

I'm really confused on how stem cells is going to treat cerebral palsy....I don't believe there is any proven effective treatments for this to work (which is why she probably needs to go to china to do it) and I would be really hesitant to do this as many symptoms of cerebral palsy can be ameliorated just by forcing the child to use body parts which don't properly function. I'd be really interested in seeing anything showing this is effective though, that'd be real cool, and I wish the best for her and her fam

Yea I can't answer your question. I just know there is another little girl from Brazil with the same problem as Marina, cerebral palsy, and this little girl, Clara, has had tremendous improvements with the treatment. Clara also did a campaign to raise funds earlier in 2009, and everything worked out perfectly for her. Her mom created a blog to talk about all her improvements. There are also pictures of the hospitals in there (she says Beike Biotech has 5 hospitals in China to treat foreigners)

Unfortunately the blog is in portuguese, but you can see the pictures probably:
