heh by ConquistadoR, August 09

Gonna play and make 200$ at NL5 then I'll come back to NL25. Should feel more safe then to play again and I think I can grind out 200$ quite fast in a few days.

Btw totally unrelated question : How do you calculate your M in a tourney and what exactly does it define ? I know that it has something to do with your stack in relation to the bb, and possible also in relation to average stacksize?

Here are some pics from my recent vacation so that this blog post doesnt become too boring. I wanna go back!

running good by remember87, August 09

I dont think I have been running this good in a long time. Quite the opposite from my live games this weekend. I won 25BB/100 during the last session (about 3k) and my only regret is that I didnt play better. With my card distribution I should be winning 35bb/100 For example I hit so many sets I even missed value from them (my opponents ofc hit worse sets or 2 pair etc).

One other thing I did bad was that I became somewhat passive at one table where 4 of us where 400bb+ deep. I missed a lot of value there and I must work on that. Next task for me: Improve my deep game!

It was also a long time since the games were this soft.. there was almost a complete idiot at every table that wanted to donate money. Its always nice not only to feel that you are much better then your opponents, also to get cards that match perfectly with their range.

I really hope this good streak continues!

Rooms of Redbull by piratematerial, August 09

i'm on my way to a photography workshop in Amsterdam right now. Not much else to do then to read the papers and blog some. So here goes. it's called Rooms of Redbull and it's located right in the middle of the infamous/famous (depending who you're asking) Red Light District. http://www.roomsofredbull.nl/?page_id=2

Presumably i'm going to be instructed how to create a pinhole camera. That's a camera made out of any kind of box. Cardboard, Lunchbox, it doesn't matter. It's a very basic camera ofcourse, i hope we will produce some results and i can put something up.

here is a new band i found out about a few weeks ago. will put the song below. don't remember if i put it up or not. i think this song is v. cool.

oh and i've been reading a good graphic novel, called Watchmen (like the movie, haven't seen that though, is it any good?). if you are into this stuff. i recommend this one.

Rough day by AgentIce, August 09

Played about 2.5 hours today, ran bad in the first session making a few annoying mistakes and was a bit annoyed but still playing good, then in the second session I made a really stupid mistake for a stack.

I called a 3 bet IP with TT v someone with 20/18 stats, 4.75 aggression, and 8.5% 3 bet who 3 bets me from the BB. My plan was to call flop once and try to keep the pot small, folding to further aggression. Flop came 789 with two clubs and a spade, and he bets and I call. Turn is a 2s, making two draws out there, and he bets again. I think I was tilted I didn't raise the flop, didn't want to fold becasue my hand was fairly strong, and I talked myself into thinking he could be doing this with a flush draw type hand or AK or something. I just pushed, something I never do, and he had QQ, and I lost. At the same time at another table I lost with KK ai pre v KTo. I got so pissed and frustrated (mostly at myself) I just went on a negative self talk tirade and I had to stop to calm down. I think the correct play is probably to just raise it up and get AI on the flop. Villain has air often enough here that we'll often get a fold, and if called we still have a decent amount of equity. I was 40% v his QQ on the flop. Getting it AI the turn was just donkey style.

Later on some other stuff came up that's private, but needless to say I never got another chance to play. I spotted the thoughts that were tilting me and handled them though, so I feel pretty confident about playing tomorrow.

On a side note, it doesn't bode well for poker when 50 NL is as tough as it is. It literally is tougher than the 200 NL games were a couple years ago. A lot of the players show very solid understanding of various complex topics. Tables often have 4 regs or so that I'm really not very profitable against. A bunch of 19/16/3 types with 7-8% 3 bet. They all seem to make mistakes and have weaknesses though, but definitely not the glaring errors that you would find at 50 NL a while back. There's lots of really bad players too of course, and just playing solid is profitable, but I feel like I should be dominating. I can say that there aren't any regs down there that are making money off me, which wasn't the case at 1/2, but it's sad to tell myself I'm not much better than 50 NL players. It's forcing me to come back down to earth in a way, I was way too cocky about my skill level before. Granted, I do feel I have been running bad these past 100k hands, and also playing bad.

Hopefully I can do what it takes to improve my game, it's obvious I was stagnant for a while and now a lot of players have caught up. I've got my work cut out for me >_< Not really sure what to do either, hopefully just randomly poking in the dark for things I can do to improve will work! Getting mentally tough again and getting rid of the tilt is a start though.

Music, books and some poker by DustySwedeDude, August 08

Some poker content here, but not much and it'll all be in the end. Posted to much lately about how I run bad and blablabla so I'll mix it up with some cultural content! (I hate people who use exclamation marks like this, but I do it with some sarcasm so it's ok)

Music:

Normally I just write about music as far as culture goes, and I got some positive response to it so I'll keep that up a bit. This month I haven't found too much new music so far in August. I kinda like Smell of Petroleum by the Pogues, but I think it might just be because I'm fairly sure that is the song they play as into for "count the zeros" over at cardrunners. Not 100% sure though. Other songs I've been listening too lately is Fidelity by Regina Spektor, which is halfway embarrassing but it's kinda soothing. Richard Cheese's Jazz cover of NIN's Closer might be the most hilarious cover ever, Pretend we're dead by L7 is something like Nirvana meets Joan Jett which is nice since I really like Jett. Lastly I want to mention Here's to you by Bob Dylan's ex-gf Joan Baez which is a really nice folk piece and I dig rock and roll music by Peter, Paul and Mary (Peter is the dude who wrote Puff the magic dragon). Also, if someone likes stuff I write about, drop me a comment of a PM with some music you'd think I'd like, preferably something halfway obscure. I really try to widen my taste and it's hard .

As far as books goes I'd like to put out some somewhat easy to read, very good and not to long books for people who wants to get started reading a bit. I read A LOT of books and I find it really relaxing so I feel that I might have a good idea about what books are good to get started with.

Funny, easy and a classic

- Three men in a boat is pretty much Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, except written in 1889. I've read it maybe four or five times and it really helps when you're in a downswing or stressed out due to some exams or whatever. If you don't laugh out loud at least every 2nd or 3rd chapter something is really wrong with you. Not to long either, you can probably finish it in a couple of days if you don't have too much else to do. Written by Jerome K. Jerome, which is a bad ass name.

- Tortilla Flat by Steinbeck. My father has been recommending this book for me the last maybe 10 years or so, and I've ignored it since Steinbeck sounds like a really fucking boring dude. Come on, he wrote the Grapes of Wraith. However, this book is a really fun story about some alcoholic good-for-nothing friends, thieves and trouble makers. It's super well written and has some hilarious moments. Like when one of the characters has visited some girl who put up "far too much resistance in relation to her standing and reputation".

Classic, not so funny, really cool

Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse. Basically a novel about a man who searches for meaning or something I guess? It's something like if a middle aged depressed German dude would Party with Raul Duke from fear and loathing and then write some weird story about his alter ego's search for meaning while watching a fairly weird porno including a Spanish Jazz musician just after having been to some kind of Mad Max-marathon. Or I could just give up and just tell you that you might want to read it, or you might hate it. I have no idea why I like this book.

Other, sci/fi, fantazy etc

Glory Road

Written by famous Sci/fi author Robert A. Heinlein this is fantazy for manly men. The hero fights the monsters, recovers whatever the crap important item for the universe he has to get and boinks the princess (who by the way is blond and well built, the hero had problems during some unnamed war in Asia since although the hookers were plenty he felt that Asian girls was to small so that he felt weird watching them, lol. As someone with a slight case of yellow fever I found this somewhat offensive). It's actually both exciting (not the sex part, Heinlein seems fairly perverted but his sex scenes arn't very grapic or anything), fun and makes you think a bit about what's important in life and such. Really recommended.

Ohh yea, lost maybe 20k the last 3-4 days, still up a fair bit for the month (not sure since I don't track omaha, but it's low 5 digits) so I'll get some self esteem back by raping 3/6. I'll play 30k hands of 3/6 and 2/4 before I play high stakes again. As per normal for me I say that I'll move down unless the games are great, continues as before, run bad and get owned for twice as much as it should've been if I had just done as planed before I actually move down. Also, if I don't win more then 3ptbb/100 over that sample all do it all over again until I do.

losing session. my bad. learn. move on by piratematerial, August 08

This is becoming a really bad weekend, pokerwise that is. Otherwise it's just great. So it's not a complete fail. This morning i was doing fine. Not really killing flops but taking down stacks here and there at a nice speed and then this fish i took a few buyins off a few days ago joined my table. In my opinion he is really really bad. BUT i think i must be honest with myself and admit that today he actually owned me really hard. I think in large part this was due to the fact that we were in reversed roles this time, right away. Last time i got up on him and he started spewing into me really really bad. I made a note that he is an erratic fish. He overbets with total air and sometimes even 3x barrels with overbets and all and like no equity given the board.

So last time my strategy was to make him spew and give him space, especially on dry boards, to spew off his stack to me. i wouldn't raise to protect my hand. even when overcards were rolling off. knowing that with his hand selection and all, it was very likely he was drawing dead. Also i had a little read on his betsizing and i was really in control of that match.
This time it was the other way around. I think the fact that i hardly connected with the boards played a role in it. But it was just impossible for me to win. I spewed off stacks here and there. Got it in with him all wrong. Which i think is partly my fault. His preflop hand selection is just awfull, he calls opens with like 70%, min or a little more 3bets like 37% and opens on the button with maybe 35% and limps a bunch maybe another 35%.

But when he is winning he doesn't stack off light. And that little piece of knowledge did not get into my brain today. I think i should have made some laydowns that i would never ever have made in our first matchup but i should have made now.

for example this hand i think in the 1st match he was bluffing here 80% of the time. but i think today maybe 30% or less and my calldown was spewy i regret it.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/728074

don't mind this one so much. i tried to 3bet him on the flop because his range for these minraises is quite large and i wanted him to discourage from it in the future. i didn't bet the turn because i don't give him credit for laying down a draw on the turn. and that's exactly what i tried to fold out on the river. it's FPS though i think and this is absolutely not a line that's standard for me because i think against good players i will get destroyed on these flops, if i use this.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/728073

this is pretty ugly. he was min3betting me 37% and i was just calling a lot and playing pots in position but here i decided to mix in a 4bet bluff also to create some history and to give me the initiative back because it was really hard to get respect from him in pots and i needed it because i wasnt hitting obviously i didnt gain much respect. turncard seemed perfect to barrel.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/728072

very important example of a hand that would have been fine 1st session but i think now that he was winning it was my spew. regret it , it didnt help that a few hands earlier he took the exact same line when a second 9 laned on the turn and i held TP, that time i did fold like i should
: http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/728071

i think i can 4bet flops like this because we have a little bit of history and he can call with really low equity holdings, when he threw it in my face it really sucked but i think i have to call. didnt want to slowplay this because i think its too drawy.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/728070

this was quite early on against him. i think its fine because this is typical him. trying to represent something that you hardly ever hit on every street and then having air. but maybe thats not so much him today hehe.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/728068

last hand of the match. i dont know. i think i regret this one. last week he could have shown up with A10 or 33 or something but now he was up so much.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/728066

i'm typing all this up in the train to amsterdam. i'm going to a movie festival. a french movie i think. if it's an good i'll let you guys know. and its arriving right now. so i have to go. but later i will update with some hands against him i won. where you can maybe see why i call him down in such a stupid way. definetely not my default. and results of today tell me why

oh whatever i'm happy i analyzed this. i only took out some of the big pots but seeing how i played doesnt make me happy at all. maybe i should put a stoploss in. but i don't like stoplosses when i am playing huge fishes. so often i have taken back 3 or 4 buyins and finally stacked them. one time i think i came back from a 6 buyin loss. thinking about it.

peace.

ok back from the movie festival. the movie was pretty funny. it was about a bunch of women who lose their jobs at a factory because the bosses close it down and then they pool their severance pay to hire a hitmen, who is an utter failure. it was kind of a dark humour.

i promised some hands that i won, here is a hand that shows how erratic he can be:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/728061

and though i think its fine he plays this hand for stacks, it shows you something about his defending range.
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/728063

here he makes a calldown that imo is really bad. the board is way too drawy too calldown this light? maybe it puts more semibluffs in my range but really.. i think its not good. i think he does this a lot but sometimes turns his hand somewhere in a bluff when he senses weakness or something.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/728064

i'm at Central station right now, waiting for my train to depart and i don't have any more hands on my laptop but i might look into this match more when i get home.
peace.

ps your advice is always appreciated.
