High Hobbies by DaTruf, April 26

First of all, I'll go ahead and say that I don't get high very often. Maybe 3-4 times a month maximum. When I am high off my ass, though, I LOVE watching planet earth ( on blue ray HD TV obv ). It absolutely blows my mind. Basically, I was hoping that some of you could offer suggestions as to mind-blowing material that you enjoy while high. Try to stick to movies or shows, but music suggestions are also welcome. And links are ftw, but obviously that might be a pain for you so it's not necessary.

Thanks LP

dazzling the bookies by piratematerial, April 26

giving the euro bookies a good run for their money lately, dazzling is really pushing it but i put it up because im feeling so high of crushing. Mainly betting euro soccer on Betfair, StanJames, Interwetten and ofcourse Pinnacle. doing fine. Not making a killing but still fairly happy considering BWIN screwed me over in a major way! Gotta warn you all:

NEVER EVER put any money on that site, they are thieves, rogues, scum of the dirtiest muddiest swampground. i just place a couple of winners and they close my account and seize my funds. The motherfuckers. If anyone pulls some weight around the sportsbettingworld let me know if you can help out. I'd like to resolve it without having to hook up with my attorney (i rather spend it on him then give it to those m'fers but prefer to spend it in my own fashion.

today i'm seeing no odds that i fancy so i got nothing for you.. (not that i would expect anyone to put too much faith into it but you never know who might want to put something on and isn't fancying anything himself.

still hoping Barca will pull through to the finals of CL. Preferrably to a final against Bayern, that would be my dream final!

and the new deep tables on pstars are fun!

Calculated Risks by TenBagger, April 26

I read the following NYTimes article about probabilities yesterday: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/25/chances-are/

And that lead me to purchase this book: http://www.amazon.com/Calculated-Risks-Know-Numbers-Deceive/dp/0743205561

It deals primarily with conditional probability:

"Perhaps the most pulse-quickening topic of all is “conditional probability” — the probability that some event A happens, given (or “conditional” upon) the occurrence of some other event B. It’s a slippery concept, easily conflated with the probability of B given A. They’re not the same, but you have to concentrate to see why. For example, consider the following word problem.

Before going on vacation for a week, you ask your spacey friend to water your ailing plant. Without water, the plant has a 90 percent chance of dying. Even with proper watering, it has a 20 percent chance of dying. And the probability that your friend will forget to water it is 30 percent. (a) What’s the chance that your plant will survive the week? (b) If it’s dead when you return, what’s the chance that your friend forgot to water it? (c) If your friend forgot to water it, what’s the chance it’ll be dead when you return?"

Some interesting statistical concepts:

Simpson's Paradox - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simpson%27s_paradox
Prosecutor's Fallacy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosecutor%27s_fallacy
Bayes' Theorem - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayes%27_theorem
Confounding Variables - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confounding
Monte Hall - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Hall_problem

The ability to properly interpret statistics and to accurately assess probabilities is a key component to success in various games that I play such as poker, fantasy sports and sports betting. However, it is also an important part of making good decisions in everyday life and I think this book has given me a slightly better perspective. A lot of the book is common sense and won't be very useful for anyone with a statistics educational background but I definitely think that it is a recommended read for most people and especially for poker players whose livelihood depends on their ability to use probability to make good decisions.

[Q] program displaying BB by DarkDevildog, April 26

Hey I was curious to know if there is a HUD program out that dispays bets/raises/stacks in big blinds? I dont really want to see the money and find it would be alot less distracting & easier(mathmatically) to figure out odds etc. Especially when moving up

poker & taxes & legislation by mnj, April 26

I recently heard on npr that U.S was updating IEGA or w/e the hell its called to make it even more difficult to deposit/withdraw to online poker rooms. Can anyone verify this? I tried looking it up on different boards and even news but there doesn't seem to be much interest so I interpreted this to mean the new legislation won't affect U.S as much as I thought?

Also for the people who play poker for their primary source of income, do you pay taxes? Do you get benefits? The more detailed the better (if it's not too personal).

sucking at PLO then sick recovery by Spicy, April 26

I didn't play poker at all last month, but this month has been rather interesting.

So I decided to take a shot at 25PLO underrolled @ $900 and proceeded to lose and spew because I'm bad
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r124/SpicyChicken626/poker/plo.jpg

And then I was like FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU cause I pretty much lost half my roll

But after that, I decided to settle down and rebuild at 25NL.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r124/SpicyChicken626/poker/nlhe.jpg
Crazy heater O_O Fucking insane 39bb/100 over 4609 hands lol

I think my PLO experiences have helped me a lot with my NLHE game as I am playing a lot less scared.
I'm particularly satisfied with my redline

And pleasant surprise, at the end of this crazy ordeal I find $200 lying in my rakeback account O_O
cause holy shit PLO gives rakeback like no other

Anyway I'm thinking about moving over to pokerstars because I think I'm gonna have lots of time this summer to hopefully be able to play a lot and take advantage of the better rewards system.
I currently have 15k FTPs right now though and I'm thinking that I'll save 67k for the 24 inch monitor before switching.

New MMO runes of magic by Perisie, April 26

not new...a year or 2 old now...

but it might be new to you

read if you like MMOs

runes of magic looks a bit like wow, nicest graphics in any mmo ive played that doesnt use the grungy style of aion

you choose 1 primary class and 1 secondary class. you can switch your primary to your secondary at an inn. the skills of your secondary are restricted. basically you multiclass.

any combination of

knight
warrior
priest
mage
druid
warden
scout
rogue (awesome stealth system)

each combo of prime and secondary also gets unique skills depending on the combination

pvp is completely open except in towns, but you get -rating for pking. you also drop gear when pked, which actually blows.

the game is ~6 gig download, free to play but cash-shop dependant in endgame.

im posting this because im just reinstalling the game and some people might wanna try it out with me

Poker is stupid by DustySwedeDude, April 25

So I don't think I've ever been so tilted in a winning month. With rakeback it'll probably end up around 20k or so, which is nice. Last week has been fairly brutal, heh. Probably not playing any significant amounts or stakes for the rest of the month due to a test and VALBORG. Overall for the year I'm not up as much as I've hoped, but I'm still making a fair bit. Pretty swingy though.

I have some goals for may though:

- Working out 6 times a week.

- Put in a lot of hands while not playing to many tbls.

- Eat well

Basically may will be the first "summer vacation" month for me since I'll miss my last test anyway due to poker obligations (lol) and therefore I won't study much (might do the test later, but w/e) and I'll spend the month doing meaningful shit such as: Getting in shape, playing poker and fishing. It'll be glorious.

laptop + monitor? by k4ir0s, April 25

Do any of you play with a laptop + a larger monitor attached to it? I play on a 15'' laptop, dunno how i'd comfortably play with another monitor since I'd have to keep my head turned all the time

Also what do you guys think is more important, having a bigger monitor or being more comfortable while playing? I usually sit on a comfortable reclining chair or I lay on my bed when I play poker, If I get a bigger monitor i'd have to sit at a desk and I have a pretty bad back so it gets uncomfortable fast. What do you think I should do? lol

Teabaggers against Defense Spending? by k2o4, April 25

Bill Maher did a funny "new rule" where he made a very good point - Defense spending is the biggest source of our national debt and is completely out of control, but you'll be hard pressed to find a teabagger who actually wants to cut defense spending despite their constant cries to reduce the debt.

Click here to watch the video

"The problem with the tea party movement, besides their almost universal rejection of dentistry, is that they want money for nothing and chicks for free. They want a deregulated free market and their jobs to stay here in the US; they want guaranteed health coverage regardless of preexisting conditions without a big government mandate; they want to call themselves teabaggers and people to keep a straight face. And of course they want big tax cuts along with deficit reduction. I can't even think of a suitable analogy for that disconnect--it's like thinking getting a handjob will clean your garage."

...

Everything that goes into defense costs us about a trillion dollars a year, most of which goes into fighting the Russians in 1978. Fighter planes for all those dog fights we get into with the Taliban, submarines to foil their evil plot to blow up our ships with car bombs, and space lasers to shoot down their exploding underpants...scream about handouts, this is what they should be protesting.
