playing real tight and nitty. kinda boring if u ask me but 25nl ftp players and rng can make one go crazy and start to change their style for the worse. that's primarily the reason I'm 8 tabling and making some weak laydowns just until i get to 100nl wherein I can start playing my more aggressive game without having to worry about people calling my pf raises with total trash out of position and sucking out on me. today's session was quite good although again there were just totally a horrendous amount of bad beats vs short stacks hitting 2 3 outers and gutshots. today i won like 3 to 4 buyins so im pretty much on track with my 4buyin a day rule and stop getting those ridiculous 15bi winning days and start playing recklessly then just lose everything in 2 days. i want a solid, consistent rise to every level. later.

| | ($200NL FTP) TPTK SH OOP vs Unpredictable player by lolgiraffe, July 23
I'm cross posting this on the forums as well as my blog since its a hand that really had me going a few different ways. I don't know how thin my play is and its sort of bugging me.
We've been playing 3 handed for a while and just went four handed.
Info on Villian:
He is currently running at 31/24/2.7/WtSD 24%
He folds to CBets 30% of the time, he raises them 25% of the time.
When seeing the turn, he bets it 48% of the time and has a turn aggression of 2.8.
My current image here is 23/15/7.0/WtSD 18% over 50 hands at the table. Villian has been at the table the whole time with me.

What range of hands can I put him on? Aggressive players like this are rarely slow playing over pairs, so I take that out of his range. I think his calling range is fairly obvious from AJ down to J8. I think it fair to put 44 and 55 in his range as well. I won't give him credit for 78 or 23. His numbers tell me he is often double barreling and I know it isn't taking much for him to play position on me and raise the flop.
This one has me stumped. I've spoken with a few people so far about this hand. One line was to dump it to the turn bet. Bob through out there the idea of just jamming the flop since we know his range is so wide. The only problem with that (I felt) was that he is so aggressive and so likely to bet out the turn again if he had something like say J8 J9 he'd bet again when I checked and be willing to go with it once I jammed. Bob made a good point though that players like this are often likely to go with it from the flop anyways so you could make an arguement that there is little point to give them a free card.
I think that the fact we were 3 handed until one hand prior to this comes in consideration, as well as that we're only 4 handed now.
Save any responses in the lines of "I don't raie AJ from the blinds". I'm not asking for critique on my preflop play, I'm looking for insight post flop.
Will post results later.

| | 6 Tables (+40.70) by KingKory, July 23
July 23rd, 2007
Today's summary:
http://www.coryland.net/uploads/pb072307.jpg
Commentary:
Moved down to 6 tables today, and my results are mixed. Yes I completed my first winning session it what seems like forever, but it's just one session. My numbers went up a bit as expected.
All of the "read-based" plays (non-standard moves I made dependant on the player) I attempted failed miserably though.
It's annoying that I got in ~300 less hands this morning from cutting back on tables, but if I'm winning I don't really give two shits I guess.
Had a tough time with a player called "mambreno", who I had never seen before. I thought he was isolating me, but after I saw him show a couple hands down, I realize he was just playing standard, and ran into some good cards against me.
Top Winners:

This was the fourth time villain had 3-bet me out of the small blind. Decided to make a move here...guess he ran into a hand :/

Again with the 3-bet out of the small blind. Called c-bet with a mixture of feeling confident in my pp/curious to see what he's playing back at me with.

WEAK! How often should I be betting this turn? 100%

| | Funny story... happend after the tournament by skorc, July 23
I went to bed after the tourney at 01.30. I open the balkony cause it's hot and I thought I saw something. Didn't bother, went to bed. Within a minute I hear something, some strange noise. Turned the light on didn't find anything so I went back to bed. 5 minutes later that noise again. By that time I was pissed off. As I was getting out of bet I something runing besides my bed.
I turn on the light and there it is. In the corner, weighing in at 0.3 kilograms, from Slovenia,
A FUCKING RAT!!!!!!!
Mother fucker!!!!!!!!
In my bedroom. Wtf? How? When? Why? I have no food, I'm no good? WTF DO YOU WANT?!!!!
It was just standing there looking at me. I moved, the rat moved.
The rat knew where that was going. And it didn't tell me ofcourse. We were gonna play the good old game of skorc and a fucking rat. Bitch. I went to get a broom. Now I got wepons! I'm Rick James bitch!!!!
I start chasing it around the bedroom, then I realize it would be good to put something on and not to chase a rat naked. It could byte my dick of!
Well it would have to take quite a few bites if you know what I mean, hehe.
So i get dressed. Got back. The bitch didn't even hide, just stood there, waiting for me! I was like wtf?!
You gonna get it know. I am dressed and I got weapons. I'm Rick James bitch!!! C'mon!!!
After chaseing that bitch for 1/2 an hour I was sweating like a pig again, so I gave up.
The bitch had me all along. I just didn't know that :/
So I sat on the bad looked at the rat and said: »Would you please leave the room?!«
You know what happend?! The rat just slowley went on the balkony and that was it.
WTF?!!!! Know I'm relly pisssed. That bitch was just playin me!
I quickly closed the door. I had to shower again. It was 2:45 when I went to bed and I couldn't open the balkony door cause that bitch might come back. That resoulted in more sweating cause it was hot. I just said fuck it and tried to sleep.
And when I thought it was all over and I could finally sleep every fucking noise made me suspicious and I couldn't sleep. I mean wtf?!!!!! Last time I checked the clock it was 4:00AM!
Fuck!!!
Got owned by stinkin rat!!!
Wish I had Jerry Jang powers. That bitch would be wrapped up and good to go in a second.
Hope you liked it. I sure didn't.

| | Sunday $100K on VC by skorc, July 23
Hey,
So it was Sunday and I decided to try and qualify for Sunday $100.000 Guaranted. I played 6 man Sit'n'Go for $43+$4 and took it down much easier than I thought. In fact suprisingly easy.
Ofcourse I was thrilled when I won that Sit'n'Go because that was the most I ever payed for any type of tournament.
I had two hours until 100K started. Didn't know what to do. It's hot and I was lasy so the natural thing would be to sleep so I did LOL.
FINALLY. My first shot at a tournament with a decent prize pool. At the begining everyone have been playing really tight so I took advantage of that and started raising a lot of hands which improved my chip stack from 2K to3.2K and then people started making mistakes when playing back at me. I tightened up a bit and they loosened up a bit. That led to a double up + some blind stealing. By that time I had 7K with avarage of 2,3K (by the way 400+ entries at $200+$15).
Then the standard card dead time that occours during every tourney that I play. It lasted almoast an hour.
Then came a sick run of cards I mean SICK! AA, KK, QQ, AKs. Before I knew it I had 22K in chips and was chip leader. Avarage was 4.8K. I suddenly realized that I have I chance of making it to $$$.
I trippled that 22K when bubble boy went out and I was second in command.
Man did I start to sweat. I mean it was pouring down my face over my dick and balls and on the floor.
I couldn't belive I've made it this far. 50 people left. Then my inexpirience kicked in. I tightened up and waited. What for, beats me! Idiot. I do blame the All-In fest that started immediatly after bubble. It took the play and fun out of that tournament.
So I waited. Down to 40, then 30, then 20. I was still in there with $1000 in my pockets (I had a BR of $600 before the tourney, hehe).
14 people left and dark clouds where gathering over my house. Some guy raises all-in 4 times in a row. Uncontested. He was UTG and raised 5th time All-In.
OK. Imagine this. You're sitting by your computer for 4-5 hours and all-in fest had been going on for the past 1.5 hours. You're sweating like Greg Raymer when he's ALL-IN at the buffet and it's your first major tournament.
My screen is showing AK of clubs. I am an idiot and call his UTG 5th raise in a row. He shows JJ and I am down from 85K to 16K chips with blinds 5K/10K.
Oh, I mean wtf was that. Still on TILT and 16 hours have pased.
Anyway I got $1000 which is great and I'll keep trying to do my best.

| | tournament coaching by Yugless, July 23
While I'm very happy and proud of all of the people here who have been having so much success in tournaments, I'm also jealous and I wish I was able to have that success.
I'm a successful sit and go player, I've handily beaten every level I've played in cash up to 3/6 and a few successful shots at 5/10, but I'm a lifetime loser in tournaments. Back when I was strictly a sit and go player I had a few decent tournament scores, but since I've been a cash player my tournament game has really suffered.
I've put some effort in to becoming good at tournaments, just like I did in cash games. Especially when I was playing sit and goes because back then I believed the top tournament players were the best poker players in the world and i really aspired to be a great tournament player. So I watched some of the great players and I read some books. There seemed to be 2 predominant styles of successful tournament players - old school conservative player, young aggressive player.
The old school conservative player (T.J. Cloutier) outlines a very conservative, even weak/tight game in his book. I had success playing like that in low limit sit and gos because the player are so painfully bad, and I also had some mild success in tournaments playing like that. But the really successful online tournament players (Mig) don't play like that. They're aggressive, they put people to tough decisions, they gladly take marginally +EV spots that the old school players avoid. In short they play good tight and aggressive poker.
Now this should be an easy transition for me because I'm a good tight and aggressive cash game player, but it's not. The aggressive plays that work in cash games don't seem to work in tournaments, for a few reasons that I can see.
1.average tournament players tend to be much worse than cash game players so advanced plays tend not to work on simple players.
2.if I make a failed bluff in a cash game I reload without blinking and reap the rewards of my new donkey image, if I do it in a tournament I'm crippled.
3.tournaments are largely played on short stacks.
Looking at the factors above, I come to a natural conclusion. Old school conservative poker is best for tournaments. If I was playing against a bunch of really bad shortstacks in a cash game I would leave my bag of tricks at home and I would play very standard basic poker, and I would usually have their money after a short time. I wouldn't play as conservative as it says to play in TJ's book, still taking any +EV spot I can and being very aggressive when I think I may have the best hand, but keeping things pretty simple and not bluffing much is the best approach in that situation.
So it looks like I have it all figured out. There's only one problem. I suck at tournaments.
If anyone has read through all of this babble, have any of you had coaching from Mig or any other tournament player? Do you recommend it? What about something like pokerxfactor? Is it possible because of tournament variance that I am a good tournament player already? I don't play very often but when I do I just get killed every time.

| | Time off by NeillyJQ, July 23
I've had a nice run on the cash tables, up and down for the past 4 months. During this time almost every session was atleast 12 hours for two months, and alot of long grueling sessions during the other two month span as well.
Got pretty burnt out after 300,000 hands, in which the last 50,000 I have to admit I've been playing on a mild form of tilt.
So, I'll be spending the next two weeks collecting my mind and patience, and plan to be restarting online poker around the second week of august.
Only 16k FPP's away from supernova, that'll be something I'll be eagerly awaiting.
Other than that, I'll be moving into a new house next week with an accomplished cash player in Pittsburgh. We'll be spending long sessions playing daily and make it to most of the good live games around the area.
GL to all of LP,
cya soon

Ok so I took the advice and gave it a go at NL25, and fuck me I LOVE IT.
I don't know if its the novelty but it's so fun and fast paced. I can see why variance is much larger.
I started with a $30 downswing which was due to some pretty shit play. But then wow, run good.. small sample, but i dont care.
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/9209/stasuw9.jpg
Comments on stats? I'm going to try and open up some more, also went to SD% seems low.
Here's my month graph, pretty funny;

How about this hand, I realise the I shouldve raised more but still do you get the money in?
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/236423
And opening ranges of 6max?
UTG: PP, AJs+
MP: PP, AJ+, KQs
CO: PP, AJ+, SC broadway
BUTTON: PP, A10+, SC's, suited A's
Also how do you play out of the blinds, particulary when its folded all the way to SB and you have relative trash? Do you call and try to take a cheap flop if BB checks? Raise marginal hands to steal BB? Let it go altogether?

| | Donkaments blow :/ by SakiSaki, July 22
Uhh, so I joined the tournament challange thinking it would be a great excuse to get better at donkaments and to motivate myself to play more poker in general. Now, a couple of days in I realize I hate donkaments so much. Its like playing poker with a straitjacket. Im already so tired of having to race for my stack continiously. Getting it in with the best hand, getting sucked out on the flop and chanting ACE OR A KING ACE OR A KING on turn and river loosing and realizing I just wasted 3 hours of my life.
The general donkamentplayer are sooooo bad its almost embarresing, they fucking cant play deep stacked and just try to fold their way into the push fold stage where they dont have to make decisions. Nothing that I love about poker exists in donkaments. You cant make sick reads deepstacked, metagame manipulations or big bluffs. Its like beating a homeless man with a stick, and yet I manage to loose to these fucking morons.
Whatever, rant over. Im still going to play donkaments because Im commited to my team and im determined to win a few just to prove my point that donkaments are ez.
Im still recovering in cash for this month, Im doing well on 3/6 and I intend to stay there for probably another month so I have a deep roll for 5/10 when I decide to move up again.
http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/9021/boegwj8.png
In other news, Im going to spain tomorrow for a week of partying/chilling with 7 friends. Hopefully it will be alot of fun and I can recharge my poker batteries so I can make up for the week off missed donkaments when I get back.
una cerveza por favor

So the last semester of uni is starting tomorrow, which means poker will have to be put off for a while. Gotta do well this semester to hold on to my grad job at deloitte ^_^.
Poker this month has been pretty amazing even though in the last 3 days I had a 20 Bi swing. But all is sweet as i have made enough spending money this month to not work part time this semester.
Goodluck to everyone, see you all in 13weeks (going to take a shot at 400NL then)

| | Myth admitted i was right! by DooMeR, July 22
hand in question = http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/235923
Corwin says:
if you're gonna make a marginal image play that is all about FE, you're better off doing it with 65s or 66
Corwin says:
because like
~TasteOfBoJi~ Don't mean a thing, if it aint got that bling~ says:
well the problem is when he calls with a pair like
~TasteOfBoJi~ Don't mean a thing, if it aint got that bling~ says:
TT-KK
~TasteOfBoJi~ Don't mean a thing, if it aint got that bling~ says:
i have better equity
~TasteOfBoJi~ Don't mean a thing, if it aint got that bling~ says:
and most hands that dominate me fold anyway
~TasteOfBoJi~ Don't mean a thing, if it aint got that bling~ says:
so basically im setting myself in a spot where im usually behind but always have decent equity to suckout
~TasteOfBoJi~ Don't mean a thing, if it aint got that bling~ says:
givin the money commited
Corwin says:
eh, it's close...i think the risk of a call is greater from one of the two cold callers rather than the original raiser
Corwin says:
if the original raiser is the type of person you think is folding here
Corwin says:
and if one of the cold callers calls
Corwin says:
you'd usually rather have 65s or 66
