Feb Recap / I Almost DIED! by JonnyCosMo, March 02

Poker went pretty well in February. I started off really hot in the first week, then after that I took a 2 week downswing / break even streak, where I dropped back down to as low as 3k+ on the month. The last week went smoothly though, I played good and ran good and ended the month +$11,275 which is solid for me.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/staff/JonnyCosMo/Feb4.jpg

I've decided from now on to remove all the stats from my PT pics since it's not really the kind of free info I want to be throwing out there. Notice my lack of motivation this month to play a lot of hands? Only 35k hands is kind of... meh... lazy! Definitely going to fix that in March. With that said, I have a very interesting story to tell about how I almost drowned. True story:

Recently I've been going surfing a ton with a few of my friends. Friday we decide to go out at like 5:00pm, which is a pretty chill time to go out since most surfers usually go in the early morning hours. The waves were amazing out at Tourmaline (a popular surf spot in La Jolla) and we ended up surfing til 7:00 when the sun went down. Well earlier in the week it was raining, and when it rains there is run-off (mud, tree crap, dirt, all sorts of shit) that gets washed into the water. You don't notice it when your out catching the waves, but you def can see the shit closer to the beach when you're coming in. So on this day, the current dragged us about a quarter of a mile to the right side of the beach near a cliff face where the waves are a little bit bigger than normal. Once the sun went down, we decided we'd call it a day and started to paddle in, but instead of paddling a quarter of a mile back to the left side while in the water, we figured it would be easier to just watch a wave and ride it into the beach then walk over. We were wrong...

I catch a wave and ride it about 25-30 meters away from the beach when all of the sudden my board slows down on something and quickly comes to a stop, launching me a few feet infront of it. I stand up, and find myself in all sorts of shit. There is a very thick mixture of mud and seaweed all around, up to neck high level, making movement very hard. I tried getting back on top of my board, but my leash was now tangled in this forest of seaweed around me. I quickly ditched the leash from myself and the board, seeing that it wasn't going to be getting me anywhere. So I'm trying to move through this shit and make my way to the beach, and I notice that it just keeps getting thicker and thicker the closer I walk to the beach. To make matters worse, every 10-15 seconds there was a wave crashing in behind me, often submerging me completely while I was stuck in the mud and seaweed. Yea, I had some quick panic attacks while this was happening, and the thought of drowning in the ocean started to cross my mind. After a few minutes I got close enough so that the waves weren't covering me everytime they crashed in, yet they still made getting to shore very difficult. It got to a point when the mud and seaweed was at about thigh deep, and so thick, that every step I took felt like what I'd imagine walking in quick sand would feel like. It took me a solid 20 minutes to move myself and my board that 25 meters to the beach. It was pretty fucking intense. Seems like I got the worst experience out of all my friends, since they were able to ride their boards much closer to the beach (since they were further to the left side of the beach than I was) and get out of this shit pretty quick. Anyways... I'm going to need to get myself a new leash now before I go back out there. Not going to complain thou! I could have gotten a life bad beat right there!

finally new entry by RaSZi, March 02

So here it is then.. the long entry.

Like I said earlier in a small post, I have been sick lately and away from home. I went to Vlissingen (place of birth), to visit family and catch up etc. When I came back I was feeling kinda sick, but nothing extreme. Boy was I wrong. On Monday fever hit me full throttle. Sweat was literally dripping from my face and I spent most time in bed, trying to recover. It lasted a couple days but now I’m feeling great again. First things first, I was gonna put in a long entry about a tennis tournament here. One of the more fun days in the past months! I did get to do some stuff while being sick though. I recorded some sick lethal rap:

ABN Amro Tennis Tournament

It’s the biggest tournament Holland offers and one of the favorites of the pro’s themselves. I been there a couple times when I was young and innocent, but that’s like 8 years ago. I was really excited about it. Also, this was gonna be Raemon Sluiter’s last professional tennis tournament. People were anticipating this match greatly. Sluiter is the crowds favorite in Holland, which you can clearly tell from watching Davis Cup matches. I watched a ton of them always and I share those feelings.

All the more happy I was when Jaco, a friend of Sluiter, invited me to come to the match. I met them in the week before the tournament and so it was very cool to invite me :D. Jaco said there other people coming along, specifically from the world of snooker. They showed up at my apartment around 3 pm, sick life. Half woken up and half dressed I opened the door and at first I thought ‘oh fuck’. Everyone was well-dressed and my apartment was a pile of garbage. Then I thought ‘fuck it’, it’s just the way it is and the only ones I clean up for when they drop by are my grandparents. Luckily, they didn’t mind at all and loved the way my ‘bachelor’s pad’ looked.

Little did I know, these two gentlemen were greats from the world of Snooker, and now also Pool. Jan Verhaas, who is basically the best Snooker referee out there. If you see a big match on TV, it’s highly likely he is ref. The other was Tony Drago, long-time top Snooker play and #4 in the world in Pool as we speak. We had some coffee here and then went to play some pool. Was really fun and we had some drinks. Tony Drago had his first drink in 6 years and was hammered pretty fast from drinking a couple Baileys. We played a game of pool and I won with some cheesy 9-ball combination ZOMG! When he wanted to rematch I obviously declined, securing my winning record against a top pool pro by doing so. Ship it.

We went to Ahoy in Jaco’s car and had some food in the VIP Village. During dinner I met Richard Kraijceck, which is cool, cause I’ve been a fan of him since I was a little kid. He is basically the first player I watched when I started to follow and figure out tennis. After dinner we got ready to attend the match. Jaco had tickets for Kraijcecks VIP Box, so our seats were sick. We shared the box with Sluiters family, who were of course attending his last performance(s).

The Match

He was playing Llodra, a young talented player who was running good lately. It was kinda weird. I just met Raemon but I was really, really nervous. I wanted him to win so bad and sitting there with his family and friends only made that feeling stronger. You get a glimpse of the whole world behind a top athlete and the importance of every performance. The match begun and people feared it would be over soon. Llodra won the first set with 6-1 and was playing like there was no tomorrow. He basically had 1 unforced error the whole first set. He hit everything and I hated him for it.

Then the second set the match really started. Sluiter was getting a better rhythm in the match and then one of the most intense moments I ever had in sports was borne. My god, I was literally shaking and my hands were sweaty. The crowd went completely crazy, supporting Sluiter. The whole hall was filled to the top, close to 10,000 attendants. The cool thing about watching a tennis match, is that you can hear a pin drop when points are being played. Then as soon as the point has been played, the hall explodes and you hear 10,000 people screaming their lungs out. The second set went to a tie-break, which was o so fitting. I think I hadn’t been that nervous since Holland and Brasil faced in penalties in 1998 World Championship. (fuck brasil holla)

Here is an example of people exploding thinking Sluiter hit an Ace. It's quiet, he serves, people think he hit an Ace, they explode.

Unfortunately he lost the tie-break. However, to me it didn’t really matter. Of course I would have loved to see him win, but the match was sick ass cool and the crowd loved it and showed their support. They had a cool closing ceremony to thank him for everything he has done for Dutch tennis. After that we hung out a bit and talked about the match. Around midnight Jaco offered to take me home, but not before Drago, Jaco and me went to eat some Chinese. Christ did they love duck :D.

Later that week we went to another couple matches at Ahoy. We saw Llodra play again, also Nadal and Davydenko. Most fun that day was playing padel. I was with Jaco and Lisette and they introduced this sick ass action game to me. My goodness, I was dying, but with a smile. It’s an action packed mix between tennis and squash basically. Here is a highlight vid from it.

Jaco hit the most impossible ball at the end of the match. Like, fuck, it’s even hard to explain it. He was running to the back of the field following a lob and then with a flick of his wrist sent the ball racing towards our side with his back towards us. Was sick.

After the match I went to Vlissingen and came back home sick.

Poker

I played some poker when I got home, well some, I ended up doing another 45 hour session. I started out with some tourneys which went well. Finished 3rd in the 50 rebuy on T6 Poker. I had some minor cashes on Pokerstars, but nothing special. Then I played some cash games on Stars, in which I also did good. I played heads up vs Bart Spijker at the end of the session, swing mania. Bart was believed to be one of the weaker high stakes players, when he just made his appearance on pokerstars. That was probably true, but boy did he improve. Playing him now is sick ass, high variance, and not just upswings now. He puts sick amount of pressure and every pot is a big one. Props to him for improving so quickly and it’s fun to see, cause I like the guy a lot.

The rest of the week I’ve been lying in bed like I said earlier. On Friday I did put in a lot of hours, which is good, cause I haven’t been playing much. Pokerstars had a double VPP/FPP cause it was leap-day on Feb 28th. Yesterday I played some hu on 2-4 and 3-6 and that went pretty well too. I don’t have any really interesting hands to show from the sessions, sorry.

Guitar hero

Since my last blog I have a couple of new achievements and stuff. I 100% FC’d Generation Rock and Metal Heavy Lady. On Metal Heavy Lady I’m top 100 on the leaderboards in score, yay. Also a new No Doubt song-pack came out and I would recommend it! Sunday Morning is such a fun song to play. Oh, I made a list with my scores on Scorehero.com. I didn’t put every score there yet, but I’ll gradually complete the list, so if you’re interested check it out. I also finished the game on expert finally, fucking Lou.

Link to my scores page:
http://www.scorehero.com/scores.php?user=126345&group=4&game=6&diff=4

It’s a good thing that I 100%’d a couple more songs. I needed the morality boost. More and more I was getting pissed off when I played bad, basically because I hate to suck at something I love doing. One time I was so pissed off when playing Evelyn online, I just walked away and went to bed. From her point of view it was as if I stopped playing, but she had no idea where I was going. I told her the next day I had internet problems cause I was kinda embarrassed. So NOW YOU KNOW, YES I LEFT PISSED OFF. Childish me, but fuck it I don’t care.

Tomorrow is my first session with a personal trainer. He trained Sluiter before he quit and he has a lot of experience with some big football teams in Holland. He is probably gonna kill the living shit out of me, but that’s kinda the point. Can’t wait to start and I hope it improves the way I live. Hollaaaaaaaaaaaa. Maybe he can even teach me how to do this:

Hope you enjoyed reading it and if you didn't well.. your probably an idiot anyway.

Disappointment and Motivation by PanoRaMa, March 02

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a162/sirasoni/fkfeb.png

My february graph. Not going to devote the entire blog to claiming how bad I run or anything, just decided to post the EV graph instead of a pokergrapher graph because this one looks a lot cooler. At around hand 24k is when I started playing like my old self (how I played at 1/2), which was roughly 25/23 and being pretty aggro and fearless overall. Prior to that, and in January, I was playing something like a controlled 22/19, but that ended up not being so fun. Good thing I took the initiative to open up my game that drastically too, because given how I ended up running the next half of the month, I would probably be up only a very marginal amount.

An utter disappointment this month though... I feel as if I played a lot better than how I played in January yet the results don't show it. The last 10 days of february, where I was motivated to do the best, resulted in massive breakeven stretches over time (I'd have a +2k day, then a -2k day, then a +300 day, then -1.5k day, then +1k day, etc.). I was really getting sick of it, as I wanted to make at least 15k in February.

I think that it's times like these where you really need to take a step back and objectively look at how you're playing. So many times in my career I thought I've hit a plateau in my skill level. It's just amazing how much better I am today than I was only 3 months ago when I had made the jump to 400nl full time. But really, if I was a perfect player, there should be nothing stopping me from destroying 400nl for 10ptbb and moving up to 5knl. Until I can do that, I can't slack in my improvement as a player.

If you guys read this weeks hotw thread I posted what I believed to be a great oop float turned shove induce with mid pair in a 3b pot. Naturally, I was verbally raped by FrEaK who (and I can't thank him enough for it) wrote paragraphs on why my play and thought process was incorrect and inconsistent. He ended up being right, my thought process at first glance seemed good, but if you delve further you'd see that it was littered with holes. So what it comes down to is, if I can be SO wrong on such a big hand, I definitely need to continue taking the necessary strides to improve myself as a player.

I know a bunch of 10 and 25nl players who just seem to be "stuck". They understand preflop decently well for their stakes, and they know how to value bet their top pair and up hands. Typically, my advice to those that tell me that they can't seem to be make much despite doing these things correctly is that "If that's all it took to beat micro stakes poker, then just about anyone in the world could be a winning player". And as we all know, poker is actually pretty damn hard. So if you fall into this camp, look to make the effort in really improving yourself. The 10nl/25nl stage is where you can actually learn the MOST at the quickest rate because a lot of the info needed to beat these games is readily available on various forums and videos etc.

So my goal for March is to make at least $20k. Going to try to make the necessary effort in improving my game, constantly, as everyone else should (whether or not you're losing or not winning as much). I have finals this month but I also have a week of spring break which is going to be me sitting at home playing poker for hours on end. Here's to a lucky March!

change of plans T.T by whamm!, March 02

march is kinda rough now. had a lot of terrible suckouts esp with my sets and get it in on fop vs fd, overpairs and shove obv draw on turn and hit their flush, hit qqq on turn only to get quadded by jacks on river, shit like that. this has got me thinking to kinda postpone my plans of moving up and try pwning first the current limit im in, then fattening up before going to 200nl. i now want a good winrate, like 5 to 6ptbb, and play like 2 to 3k hands a day tops, maybe 20 tabling, coz i get better results rather than 24 tabling i dunno why. im also thinking of putting money on another site with rakeback, coz i know im really missing out on things if i dont. im thinking of ftp and 18 tabling there, but the lag just tilts the hell out of me. i hit 11k plus last night and was really heading towards 12k by monday but since i ran terrible today i change my mind. i also am thinking of starting to withdraw 1k a month for expenses on a regular basis starting next month, won at the casinos the other nite like 400usd which isnt bad in my country, and bought a psp coz my kinds wanted one and i thought, "heh this is gambling money" and went straight to the mall the ff day and bought one. gtg now and do some mcluvinnnnnnn lol
peace and goodluck to all here at lp

i also hate 200nl now that lostaccount is there and he'll be like outplaying me on like 12 of my 22 tables argh
here's my graph for ppl to laugh at lol

February was good by Joe, March 02

So, February is over and I can say that it was another very good month for me in poker. Another one-of-the-best-months-ever month

http://www.pokergamers.cz/joe/feb08stats.gif

So basically I continued to run good and I think I improved in certain parts of my game quite some. I opened up my game a bit and was quite pleased to see the results of it. Again, I played mainly the midstakes 6-max games at PokerStars, with occassional NL1k sessions. I mixed up some heads-up too, but didnt do as good at it as I would have liked to.

I think one of the key points that I have been doing good recently is, besides running good, that I put some effort into trying to stay 100% focused all the time while playing. I played 3-4 tables most of the time and really tried my best to watch the action very close. Not only when I was in a hand, but also all other hands. It definately gave me some more information than if I werent doing that and helped me make some good decisions.

As for March, I am sticking to the same game plan - mostly midstakes 6-max @ PS + some NL 5/10 6-max + some midstakes heads-up. I would like to increase the number of hands at NL 5/10 a bit. Although I dont expect to continue winning this much every month, I will certainly do my best to do so or even better

Also, I intend to go to Vienna for the Spring Poker Festival, which starts March 5 and ends March 16. I am probably coming on 10th and staying for about 4-5 days, not sure yet. I know CasinoCasino is coming too, so if someone else is coming, let me know. I am not sure yet if I will play in the main event, but I would like to. I am thinking of trying to sell part of the action because I am not completely comfortable with playing tournaments this expensive. I will probably make another blog-post about this later.

Non-poker-wise, I successfully finished all my remaining classes early in the month, which is nice considering how lazy I am as far as school goes. Later in the month I went to the mountains for snowboarding with my friends for about 5 days. It was a cool trip, eventhough the snow conditions werent that good.

Thats it for February,
Joe

Im at 110 now. I got cocky and it just happened. 200 too 110 in a snap after I lost with a dead beat I went 10 H U then lost that and did 20 to make up for it. It continued, I went as low as 90 and settled to 110.
It's left me feeling tilted and discouraged. I better learn something from this >:/
Gonna watch a movie and try not to play poker anymore tonight.

Maybe I should stop playing a few days?
suggestions anyone?

-_^ Feb Post!! by lachlan_fearn, March 01

hi LP,

back to uni now so im going to be playing a lot more poker then when i was working full time over the holidays. so it should be good

Feb:

feb i didnt have a lot of time to play around work but it wasnt really that great... i guess i didnt run great and spewed alot, same old for me lately. but when i got back to uni last week i started concentrating a lot more and managed to run alright so my BR is now at $500 again and im going to play NL25 immediately, only moving back if i reach $400. so a 4 buyin shot but i dont need to cashout so i see no need to wait til 25 buyins like some people do. hopefully once gain ill stay this time haha

Playing the hand AK.

ive reviewed a lot of my hands and i realised over February that i am actually down on money with the hand AK. dunno what im doing wrong but anyone who has some good tips on how to play AK well on FR let me know.

just a random sample hand to illustrate:

main spots are like when u 3 bet someone to say 12 BB's, they call. ur first to act.

board come like Q93. good to lead out here? i have been near potting it but i often get called and raised here so i still find AK occasionally hard to play unless i have reads and so on.

New PAhud stats (recommended by me)

I spent a couple of hours yesterday putting a few more stats on my PAhud setup. I play FR and the stats i put in are the Call PFR stat (how often they call a Pre flop raise), the Continuation Bet % stat, and the Fold to Continuation Bet stat.

I use these stat ALOT now as I find they are really useful at determining what kind of player you are against. See there are some fish who limp/call preflop and almost always fold to a cbet, whereas others, the "calling stations" who just wont let go.

So by having these stats on display u can easily work out which ones to cbet into and which ones to value bet to death, so for any NL10'ers out there imo give this a try, or at least have it in your popup stats.

If you just use a fish's aggression factor for your reads, u have no info on how often they C/C or C/F flop, all u know is that they wont raise u.

http://www.liquidpoker.net/user_pictures/abcf17d5ff4569599caa927c3fc859b1.png

Small pairs

This whole month i tried playing small pairs passively rather than aggressively. ie. limping in early/medium position and only raising from the cutoff/button. this is in contrast to previously just raising them in all Med-late position spots.

i found that i broke even overall with small pairs, whereas i was down about 2 buyins last month from playing them aggro. so at NL10 my advice is just play them passive. too often you will raise with a small pair and get 2 callers and u have to give up without a set as cbets dont take the pot down very often.

Thanks:

-this month shaneO has been a big help, full ring isnt really the mainstream on this site but getting advice and help from higher stakes FR players is really invaluable, thanks heaps eh

-Silver, really appreciate the time when u were sweating me at 6 max... guess im not made to play it just yet after i lost 6 buyins later on but was still fun

Good luck to:

All fellow players making the move from the micros to the small stakes. so that is:

-kimseongchan (newest NL50 player, nicccccccce work)
-Silver)NZ( (playing NL100 fuck yeah)
-sirracksalot (also flying through the limits)
-Božidar Bralic; (increasing croatias GDP every day )

stoploss and stars is gay by JYang, March 01

rofl im a nit. cant play no more tonight. too many suckouts

pretty worried about game quality on stars. every table seem to have about 3 shortstackers that at least know what they are doin.

yesterday i was around same EV according to holdem manager, up $3500 and EV adjusted to $3500. and after holdem manager released this crap i kept goin 1 day big win, next day down much EV, etc etc. small variance but cant keep consistancy, at least my monthly results show lots of consistancy. meh.

probably playin bad after gettin sucked out and losin all flips. so takin an early quit tonight. i can sleep while down some $, i dont care =D

yesterday i told myself, lets goooooo for supernova elite. now im back to my old opinion. fuck supernova elite, all it matters is game quality. chasin for SNE while playin in fucked up games is not worth it.

March 1. It's nice to be at the start of the month, it helps me remember my goals a bit more. I got some suggestions before in my last post regarding setting BR goals, which I'll definately keep in mind, I realise it could add an extra layer of stress if I don't meet the daily quota, which would probably be bad for my game.

Having said that my BR is at 200 now - 70+ from two days ago, which I mostly built from 10HU sngs. and also some of it was from the bonuses released from my 75 dollar bonus which I got when I signed up.

I usually play the SNGS after I get a bad beats. I'm not sure it's is the wisest move to make, but I have a pretty good win rate at 10HU, so far and It's not that difficult. But the stress level compared to just playing cash 10nl is a lot higher, since I can potentially lose money a lot faster, which I think gives me mostly the good kind of stress which focuses me, but it still gets me feeling a bit insecure.

Of course my aim is to get to 600nl by atleast the end of the month, so I can play at 25nl.

lol easiest money ever by JoeDeertay, March 01

So I haven't been playing very much poker lately because of school, since I need t get As in everything to continue going to school and I've really focused on studying a lot more. Every once in a while though if I had a free hour or something I'd play on this nice little facebook poker application and win, and I got myself up to a #167 world rank and 13million chips by friday from like 4.7million chips on wednesday. Then the fun part...

I had been selling my chips off in small amounts, like 100k-500k, for the past month or so and had made like $100 doing it, and I put another ad in the application forum last night to see if there would be any more buyers. When I got home from work today at 2, I checked my messages and saw that one person was asking how much I could sell 10million chips for, and I told him $600. He told me it was a deal, sent me the money, and I gave him his chips. I also sold 1million to someone else for $80. After PayPal fees, I was up $654 from selling fake chips to people on a fake poker application where no one ever plays seriously, or at least well, lol.

I have about 2million chips left, and considering how easy it was to get to 13mill I might just try again and sell my chips until I am rolled for like 50NL or have a deep 25NL roll or something, or maybe even more. It is much faster and easier than 10/25NL and there is no risk, so we'll see how that goes. lol ship teh moniez!!!

Sick life! GL all XD
