Thought I'd give a quick update, as I just found out myself...
G-ma went to a conference this weekend. She came back having dumped "invested" $22000 into the MLM company's stock.
They are a multi level marketing company. (<---instant reason to never touch them alone)
Their financials are awful.
Their posted financials have practically no controls (traded over the counter).
Their product is built on lies, falsified and misleading research. It is a sham product.
She just dumped "invested" 22k which is not THAT small a chunk of her retirement..
Fool and their money are soon parted. I'm about done with morals. To be so powerless and have it happen in my own household against all reason.. holy SHIT its mentally scarring.
I'm so fucking furious. I can't really describe how I feel.

If you guys are curious
The product claims to be an effective anti-oxidant.
http://www.protandimscams.com
The doctor who's name the company has attached itself with (and who claimed to of created protandim) is just a hired-name who had nothing to do with the "development" of protandim, which was created by a person with no scientific training or credentials whatsoever
- http://www.protandimscams.com/lifevan...-lie-about-the-creation-of-protandim/
All of the research done on it refers to the TBAR level in judging its efficacy, a proven bullshit indicator
http://www.healthmlmscam.com/tbars-an-unreliable-test-of-oxidative-stress/
Financials wise, I'm not going to go in and read their latest quarterlies-- the entire business is built on a failed business model for fuck sake.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=lfvn.ob
Look at results from operations this quarter.. lost 47 million and their entire market capitalization is like 140m
I am fucking livid and completely impotent to do anything. There's no reason to think she won't continue throwing good money after bad when the time comes and the stock pumping these cocksuckers are doing is no longer working on the average retard.. and she doubles up "getting it at a lower average price" |

Thats fucked up, not even the money aspect of it but just the fact that someone you care about is getting exploited like this and not being able to do anything about it. |

It is an obvious case where you have to go to your Grandmother and say, Who is worth more to you, You(her grandson) or a lawyer+scam company. Tell her she has to choose you and sell out all her shit and stop MLM forever, or lose her grandson. No money, illusion or profit is worth losing family, if she picks the lawyer/scam, she prolly needs to see a doctor/psychiatrist because she has got some sort of problem |

I don't mean to be an asshole but isn't kind of her own fault? I mean, unless she is suffering a pretty bad case of Alzheimer or whatever, it should be possible for her to use her own cognitive abilities and make a weighted decision on what's right and what's not...
Anyways, I'll try and bring some constructive along as well... Can't you just be brutally honest to her and try to make sure she won't make those mistakes again? Maybe it would help if you get your mom/dad (whoever is her kid) or any possible uncles/aunts along to get your point across... They can't like the foresight of your grandma possible going bankrupt because she is 'investing' her money in phoney companies... |

my grandma has dementia and was withdrawing around 500$ per day from the bank and no one in the family knew what she was doing with it...in the space of 2 years she spent all her savings. my mum found out and became power of attorney over all her assets. you should look into this. not sure what the rules are in the US but in ausstralia it can happen |

As I said in the previous thread.... which was conveniently ignored for some reason....
If you care AT ALL about her you should get your family (or you) to file a court order for power of attorney so you can get control of her finances so she cannot do stuff like this.
Obviously, reasoning doesn't work with her nor anything else you have tried. There's really only one thing left you can do which is the above. And as you can see I am backed up by julep saying the same thing. |

Terren,
FWIW I mentioned the jist of your situation to a family member who was a district judge of ND for 20+ years and lawyer for like 15 or something before that (now retired), and his suggestions are 1) contact the consumer fraud division of your state's attorney general office, and 2) contact the securities commissioner.
i don't know if this helps but good luck either way. |

As you stated this already happen, can't you ask a court a guardianship order to protect her from those kind of situations ?
abstract of a study carried on this particular problem :
|
Exposing Financial Exploitation of Impaired Elderly Persons
There is a dearth of medical publications on financial exploitation of elderly persons, but a significant amount of information on this subject is contained in the literature of other disciplines. Financial abuse accounts for up to one-half of all types of elder abuse in the United States, accounting for over 500,000 victims. Psychological abuse, including deception, intimidation, and threats, always accompanies financial exploitation. Despite the devastating emotional and financial losses incurred, physicians are reluctant to recognize, diagnose, and assist impaired elderly victims of financial exploitation. |

22k?! Holy shit wtf, how can she be scammed for such large amounts like this? Wtf could they possibly do to motivate her to dump this much money on her first run?
Oh well, when she loses the 22k maybe then she'll own up to the fact that she's been taken advantage of. |

Agreed, time to roll in the big guns, first priority is to get her money back, then after that find a way to stop her spending it in such ways.
I really hate that people like these MLM people live on this planet. |

looool I edit OP to make it more clear she invested it into the company's stock (it hurts to use the word "invest" here tho), so its money in play and it represents a big step cuz she's never put nearly this much money on the line.
there was a keyword in the 2nd sentence of op, at the end there
REGARDLESS it is still basically setting money on fire if that it isn't divested, sooner the better |
