My main priority is to protect my grandma's interests, but I also live with her and hear about the newest way she is being conned weekly. I obv post this when flustered and part of it is venting, which is where that sentence you pointed out came from.
The rest is also wrong as far as my relationship with her goes.
Anyway, some good points have been raised here.. esp. Oly's posts (and others). Will keep 'em in mind going forward.. |

Can't you insist on taking over the payments then cease them? All while telling gran that you're making the payments. When ex-lawyer guy tries to sort it out, maintain you've been paying him and that he is lieing.
Failing that make a fake police report of him going to jail for being a pedo and show gran. Problem solved.
Honestly I don't even know how this goes on if you live with her. |

You are not going to convince her of anything, I feel for you but this is how it is with old people. Im not sure what you can do but I hope it works out somehow and the guy dies in a fire. |

Maybe she just needs to learn a lesson. I think most people who participate in these scams probably do so out of some sense of greed. The ole get rich quick scheme. I mean she's not investing money with these people because she wants to help them, she's doing it because she believes she's going to get $12,347.52 per week within 6 months. However most people eventually get burned one too many times and finally give up for good. Maybe she just hasnt hit that pain threshold yet.
Unless she has some sort of addiction to this kind of behavior, let her fuck herself. I doubt she'll mortgage the house and sell her car to pursue this. She obviously has limits (does she?). I'd just tell her you'll be waiting to give her a big "told ya so" when it fails miserably. There is nothing wrong with a little tough love. Remember we're thinking long term here, she needs to lose BIG in order to finally knock this shit off. |

Her losing big is exactly what I'm concerned about, and as side issues the well-known hit to self esteem and such that constant, inevitable failure leads to. I really wouldn't care if it was just the monthly subscription and her out there trying to sell her products and what not; everyone needs something to do. It becomes fucked up because its not just that, but they run several simultaneous scams. For instance they do conferences/seminars with exorbitant prices. Even that is kind of whatever (until you get to the ones where they cost several hundred+ dollars to attend.. she isn't doing those yet. but they did just take her to a sauna and convince her she needed a $500 foot detoxifier). The biggest danger is that beyond all of those scams they are pumping their stock as well.
She insisted that I listen in on their weekly conference call, which is defined by 30 minutes of they promoting the business and getting their legions of retards excited to continue failing, and the guy on there literally said, "Now, we can't tell you to buy the company's stock on a conference call like this, but........" a big spiel on how they are all buying stock and how its just going to go up and up etc. Very clearly insisting people buy the stock. Then grandma said to me, "I'm going to buy some more of their stock."
That can get dangerous and its what I'm really concerned about, long term. |

play dumb in your first convo with him, make it sound like you are easily to fool just like your grandma, don't give any sarcastic tones that might blow your cover
gather more info on how his scam works, then further figure out ur plan of action |

Its pretty simple how these things work rek just google MLM. It is basically just pyramid scheme were all the money comes from recruiting more people under you and so and and so on but no legit product is really being sold.
If you get in at the top you can make loot though...
def don't let her buy stock and shit though rofl |

I have several friends who are young, popular and doing in general very well in life, yet they have donked away shitloads of money into MLM crap. IMO it's not about her being lonely or anything, just about her being poorly able to detect the bullshit in MLM hucksters speach. Also after being wrong for so long and spending so much money on it, she probably will rather keep spending money than admit to anyone (least herself) that she has gotten hustled.
Anyway I don't think there's any easy solution here. I'd try the "direct assault" -method, which consists of you keeping an hour long presentation "Why MLM is a hoax" to your grandma and then telling the huckster to fuck himself. If you need background info about MLM try http://www.mlmwatch.org/index.html and http://www.skepdic.com/mlm.html
Albeit it's probably not a good idea. In previous posts there seem to be many good ideas, such as playing in while avoiding spending any money and trying to waste everyones time, or introducing her to a real financial planner. |
