Can't say much about poker because I know crap about it, but you can't be seriously saying that this is true. If you are serious, well, wake up.

Just stumbled across this from a 2+2 thread.

My friend has been getting coached from Corwin for awhile now and the progression I've seen in his game has been amazing. I've seen him go from 200nl to crushing 400nl. I play 50nl/100nl and have had multiple coaches (including coaches from training sites) and can honestly say my friend (who is coached by corwin) is miles better than all of them. I know he's told me that getting coaching from Corwin has been a great decision for his poker career. You can check his PTR under ACE_ROCK.

ACE_ROCK just sent the first reply to my coaching survey:

  Hey,

As far as not paying anything through profit sharing, I must say that this coaching program would not have worked for me if it wasn't for Corwin being so flexible every step of the way. Allowing me to write my own contract of paying $1,000/mo for 10 months. Then when I had a lot of things going on outside of poker and had to take a month off, I was allowed to do so even when I gave no notice before the actual payment was do. So for all of that I am extremely grateful, and there is absolutely no way that I could make a year long coaching contract work if it wasn't for the flexibility shown by Corwin.

(1) 6-max $2/4NL-$5/10NL
(2) Every single session that I have I feel that I learn at least one thing, and usually multiple things that I need to improve on my game. Some things we have discussed before, and I simply need more work on it, and other times he introduces an entirely new idea that I have never thought of before. Namely it would be analyzing a players entire hand range, and then using that information to consider all different possible lines, and which might be most profitable.
A lot of times I fit into the same category that 95% of "solid" regs do, which means taking the same standard line that I saw on a CR vid a year ago, and never betting over 75% of the pot, or less than 50% of the pot. Corwin is extremely good at knowing when is the right time to take certain lines that 99% of regs never take in their lives. The more session that we have, the better I feel I am getting at taking these non-standard lines, and actually knowing the implications of them. In my experience it's not just what Corwin says to do, but it's the reasons that he has for doing them, and how often he is absolutely correct.
(3) I feel I get as much out of the sessions as I put into them. If I show up five minutes before without any preparation, and just expect to getting better through diffusion or something, then I usually don't end up getting much out of the session. However, if I am really trying hard to learn from Corwin the different types of flaws that I have in my overall approach to the game, then I always get some very inspiring thoughts from Corwin, and can use that to completely rethink certain spots that I have had trouble with in the past.
(4) Don't take my word for it, search PTR for ACE_ROCK. Before the introductory seminar on June 7th I played $1/2 full ring, and did alright. However after the one week seminar I started playing 6-max and "scrubbing" limits, instead of considering myself a $1/2 reg or whatever. Within the first month I was playing $5/10, and taking shots at $10/20NL.
Since the 7th of June I have played about 80K hands with a winrate of ~9BB/100. I moved up literally instantaneously after the seminar, and honestly attribute this success completely to Corwin, and his ability to coach, and possibly my ability to learn. Literally weeks after starting this program I had already felt that I had gotten MORE than my monies worth! Without exaggeration, the introductory seminar is worth the 10K commitment, even if nothing else was included. However, without this seminar I do not feel all of the individual sessions combined would be worth 10K. This is why I feel I have gotten well more than my monies worth, because I had the luxury of the face to face meeting, along with Corwin reiterating his ideas for a year.
(5) Possibly try to "check-up" on your students. I know this is the students job to check in with you, and it could be very difficult for you to keep running tabs on all of your students. However, in my experience when I am playing confidently and enjoying poker, is when I am MUCH more likely to contact you to get advise, or to try and work on my game. However, when I am in a "horror cycle" I am so much more focused on trying to win back what I've lost, instead learning from my mistakes.
On the other hand, when I'm crushing, I am focused on how I'm playing, and improving, instead of things I cannot control. This is my confident mindstate, and it is hungry to learn. When I'm not confident, it brings my ego out, and instead of trying to learn, I just tell myself how good I am, or look at my graph ext. and this eats away at my confidence, so this is when I am most in need of coaching, and seemingly the least likely to seek it out. Just a simple word of encouragement from you, would really make me feel like you were more concerned about how I am doing, than you are of just doing what you are required to do. I understand that this could be unpractical, and is more of an idealistic way a coach should operate, however I really do not have any more complaints, and I recommend Corwin to everyone that I talk to!

Hope that helps,

edit: removed his name

in before wobbly finds something wrong with what Myth posted or claims that Ace Rock isn't a success story b/c he isn't crushing 50/100 NL.

Well I for one would like to know a little more detail about a guy going from 1/2 to 5/10 in a months time. It sounds like he might have been playing over-rolled to begin with. It also sounds like he was a competent player beating 1/2 FR for a decent clip to begin with.

I think it's quite clear Myth has a point of view that can be helpful or even insightful. He's also apparently coaching 100 hours per month now and that's a lot of practice. It's also a tremendous amount of time spent thinking about the game and thinking about spots that other people who are grinding all day might not think about very often. Things he comes up with to help one student can then be transferred to his other students. All and all that's a really good thing.

My question has not been responded to by anyone on LP thus far and it remains the same: What is more likely to have improved his students games?

A) Two hours of coaching by Myth per month

or

B) Volume, Variance, Strong desire to learn & improve, and a large length of time 1-2 years.

You can talk about this in circles forever. Now that we have a testimony from a successful student, and there have been pretty much no actual complaints from students.

this is a question about the nature of coaching in general and is not entirely specific to myth. you can use valid arguments with valid examples either way
