Everybody is talking about UFC 111
but i guess the upcomming UFC event on Sunday also deserves a look

Jon Jones vs. Brandon Vera
Junior dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga
Cheick Kongo vs. Paul Buentello

Daniel Roberts vs. John Howard
Clay Guida vs. Shannon Gugerty
Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Eliot Marshall
Duane Ludwig vs. Darren Elkins
James Irvin vs. Alessio Sakara
Brendan Schaub vs. Chase Gormley
Eric Schafer vs. Jason Brilz
Mike Pierce vs. Julio Paulino

Quite a few intersting and talented athlets in there

-pretty good 3 main fights
-Daniel Roberts is 9-0 in minor organisations and gives his UFC debut
-Mike Pierce is insanely talented too and faces Paulino who comes of 7 clear victories in a row in minor organisations
- Guida is always good for a nice show
rest of the card can also bring some interesting fights

vera jones should be interesting. i think jones is way over hyped and the best thing about him is his retard reach which he does not use well and his wrestling. i think his strking is very sloppy but hes just getting away with it cuz he hasnt faced an even semi decent striker that im aware of. ill take vera in this fight

jds vs GG is tough to call. ill take gonzaga with the upset

kongo

guida

i want JDS to win so bad. I love a good striker especially in the HW division.

Jon Jones > Brandon Vera via decapation. I was off the Vera train after his fight with Randy he won't make it out of the first round

This looks like a great card

JDS has it in the bag, GG is the biggest waste of talent in MMA, guy has all the skills and strength to be the best in the world, but folds under pressure so quickly. Seriously give GG's size/str/skills to any other fighter and you have a champion.

Jon Jones > Brandon Vera
Junior dos Santos > Gabriel Gonzaga
Cheick Kongo < Paul Buentello
Daniel Roberts < John Howard
Clay Guida > Shannon Gugerty
Vladimir Matyushenko > Eliot Marshall
Duane Ludwig > Darren Elkins
James Irvin < Alessio Sakara
Brendan Schaub > Chase Gormley
Eric Schafer < Jason Brilz
Mike Pierce > Julio Paulino

Jon Jones via skull smashing / possible 1st death in MMA over Brandon Vera
Junior Dos Santos via KO over Gabriel Gonzaga
Cheick Kongo via TKO over Paul Buentello

well there is a giant pool of big timers in the LH division.
while it'd be nice to see him fight someone serious, i think the upper echelon of those fighters would probably crush him.

jon jones will not finish vera.

vera is like gonzaga, a huge waste of talent. hes one of those guys that every fight part of you expects his potential to show and see him dominate but it almost never does. that said i think he will give jones a really tough time but it will come down to the wrestling imo. jones will be able to take him down and unleash enough gnp to win a decision

the why is the simple fact that kongo has been getting wrecked in his last couple of fights.
mainly being out striked by a ground game specialist.

edit: a ground game specialist that most people really hate, and wanted to see lose.

I havn't seen Kongo in any of his "good" fights since I've only watched the UFC for maybe a year or a little less (I've watched K1 for a long time though) but except for being a strong motherfucker with ok chin I havn't seen anything impressive from him. Buentello doesn't seem that good either though.

kongo is massively overrated because

a) he beat a shitty cro cop that is terrible in the ufc because he was a one trick pony that got figured out and he cant cut off corners anymore which was massively important to him.
b) and because he has a monstrous 8 pack and people like johnny cosmo & talented tom eat that shit up :D

Am I one of the only few rooting for Vera? . I would like to see Vera make a run for the top again. I think Vera needs to work on building some mass and strength so he doesn't get man handled into the cage like Randy did to him in his last fight. More strength would allow him to push people off to do some dynamic striking or hold more effective muay thai clinches.

overall kinda dissapointing imo

Bluentello vs Kongo -> Looker like minor league or something both of them are nowehere near the top level of guys like Lesnar,Mir,Valasquez,Carwin,JDS etc.
Kongos Takedowns were so bad and Bluentello didnt look good at any point in the fight.

Gonzaga - JDS Gonzaga looked just too slow

Vera-Jones Vera just didnt have the balls to try anything from the guard ... he even had wrist control and hip control at one point but didnt even attempt a submission
First viscious elbow of jones ends the fight

U see what i did there with A8 ? He 4 bets and there we go insta jam A8 : ---booooom -- . hahahaha ( Krantz)

JDS is s stone cold killer.. that slash motion or whatever it is he does during the intros is pretty funny lol, would be laughable if he wasnt so fucking good. heavyweight division is kindof exciting for the first time in awhile. I think JDS and cain are the most impressive/deserving of a shot, too bad the winner of mir/carwin has first dibs. I almost don't want JDS and cain to fight each other before they get a crack at the title. Maybe one of them gets the loser of mir/carwin first (probably cain) but then I'm not sure who JDS fights that would be at all interesting. a freakshow vs bobby lashey or marius?? lol

Jon Jones' wrestling seems pretty fucking sick since vera's td defense seems pretty solid (gave randy trouble anyway). You guys think that was an easy armbar situation? Like to the point where its ridiculous that he didnt pull it off?? (I don't know I'm asking those of you that train bjj) Regardless I can't wait to see jones vs some top flight talent. Seems to me like he matches up well against most of the division.. who even has good submissions at lhw? i never see fights end by submission at light heavy. Jones vs anderson silva would be pretty sick, but theres no way dana white would let that fight happen.. is there?

why is bunetello in the ufc? just a can or what? it looks like he hasnt trained anythign but boxing, and is in terrible shape.

Bunetello's contract with Affliction got carried over to the UFC when they were brought back in AFAIK. They kept him around cause he usually makes for exciting fights as he just goes out and bangs with anyone willing.

The armbar was there way too many times not to take it, at points Jones was willing putting his arm passed Vera's shoulder, almost looking like he was thinking of using it to post or something, many times Vera had wrist control and a high guard that could have been finished rather easy even by lower tier grapplers, if anything I would say Vera fought scared on the ground, like he was waiting for the last 30seconds or so to try it so even if he does miss it he doesn't lose position for too long.

JDS > Carwin > Cain > Mir

I think UFC and sports in general are so much fun to watch

if you have money on it

I mean seriously if I didn't bet on anything thats aired or hyped, then I'd be bored out of my mind

Thing is, carwin's only had 1 fight vs decent opposition, and he got fucking rocked pretty quickly, even if he won soon after. Hes got a great wrestling base obviously and its huge and insanely strong with hands that hit like sledgehammers, but he seems slow to me, maybe easy to hit, and definitely very unproven. Cain and JDS both have more impressive resumes, even if they occasionally let fights go past the 2:00 mark.

Anyone wanna speculate on upcoming HW and LHW matchups?

wow actually JDS's ufc resume is super impressive. everyone he's fought have been solid fighters except stephan, the circus act, strauve, all other 4 are super solid wins.

sick record but he looks super shitty technically, really unathletic, but maybe his size makes up for it. yvel seems like a much more dynamic fighter at least, which would give him a better chance vs quality opposition. 2 wins vs overeem and a win vs kongo. i don't see anyone well known on struve's win list.

Stim_Abuser   United States. Mar 22 2010 03:42. Posts 7499

yea now that i think about it knocking out yvel on the feet is far more impressive than knocking out struve on the feet.

though i think jds will have a lot of trouble once he fights someone with good takedowns. hes only a purple belt in bjj and a semi recent one at that.

rofl yes cosmo sick call. did the elbow go right into the eye socket? is vera ok?

and yea i cannot believe vera didnt try an armbar. i mean im not saying id have finished it but my god i would have went for one immediately. we havent really seen jones work much from the closed guard, but he has beaten a few bjj black belts already so i dont think his sub defense is really his weakness (still think its his striking which is awkward and has lots of openings for him to get hit by straight punches), but he cant be leaving his arms hanging around when 3/4 of the top 10 205 pounders are bjj black belts

oh and JDS is a fucking beast.

it feels soooo wrong that JDS and cain have to fight each other. oh well, will be awesome and interesting to see how cain does against a beastly boxer who still has his speed, tons of power and is fairly well rounded, and how JDS does against a monster wrestler that has pretty damn good standup and stays active constantly.

yea jon jones is definitely scary. i wonder if theres anyone in the lhw division he wont be able to get down. he got vera down with fucking ease, although vera did say he was not gonna try to defend takedowns hard in the show and rely on his bjj.

he kinda rubs me the wrong way though. he seems nice enough but his i used to snitch on kids who smoked pot and his sloppy ass stand up taht gets so much love. i dunno he kinda tilts me. though i still think good active bjj practitioners that arnt scared like shogun, machida, and lil nog would sub/sweep him easily.

jds is awesome. i like him and carwin a lot. if mir wins and gets the title shot as ive said before im going to go on monster tilt.

ok i lied

barnett followed up by kicking him right in the dick. not an inside leg kick either. a fucking front kick right in the dick. it was horrible. mighty mo proceeded to say that he couldnt continue. the japanese officials proceeded to stand around for 15 minutes arguing while mighty mo kept saying he couldnt continue. after the 15 minutes he did. i dunno it was pretty shady.

barnett got the takedown and mo tapped before it was close to even locked in lol.

JDS's style of striking is really really really well set for MMA. it's got a lot of safe shots to the body and counters correctly. He throws power shots when opponents backpedal because no fear of takdown. he's very smart.. super impressed by him and at HW if you can have that type of speed you really can do something. in some ways i think his potential to be dominant could be greater then cain's because cain is a wrestler in a division with a ton of wrestlers/ground guys while JDS is a striker and no one is really close. Pretty sure he'd horrificly decapitate kongo.. So all depends on his TDD.

I mean people think he's small but at 6'4" 240 he's basically arlovski size and speed. But i'm sure his chin is way better. He's also younger then Cain (25 and Cain is 27). I mean i still think Cain is more preppared based on what i see, but JDS for sure seems like he could be a real monster in HW... time will tell especially if they face ecah other.

Fox   . Mar 22 2010 23:42. Posts 3110

i mean love fighters like gsp/bj/etc... but there is nothing like the HW division. I mean no matter how good bj penn's boxing and ground is he'll never beat gonzaga ever. GSP is a beast but cain would probably melt his brain.

the HW champ is the real king of MMA and it's just awesome to see all these beasts in the division.

Haven't seen the Penn vs Machida/Gracie fights? To make such a broad statement involving two of the best p4p fighters in the world is kind of ridiculous. Especially since your yard stick is Gonzaga. I would never underestimate those guys ever.

Apparently Lesnar is the king of MMA?

Rush   United States. Mar 23 2010 02:14. Posts 2299

And also if you're logic is that they are bigger therefore stronger blah blah, then I could say that if BJ Penn was 250lbs and the same skill level as he is now, he'd rape everyone in the HW division. Same for GSP. And if you shrunk Gonzaga (to use your example) or Cain to 155 and gave them same skills, they would get RAPED by BJ.

I agree with fox. Part of the appeal of mma for me is that its a lot closer to a real fight than something like boxing. There probably isant anyone in the world who weighed 155lbs and below who would be favored in a fight to the death against bj.

And thats why the heavy weight division is so appealing. The best hw mma fighter is literally the best fighter on the planet and would be favored in a fight against anyone in the world. Theres something special about someone being the absolute best in the world at something, especially something as universal as fighting.

And seriously gonzaga would kill bj everytime.

Yea if they had the exact same skills thats true but who cares? In a real fight if you put fedor or lesnar against bj bj is just going to get killed and thats part of why hws are appealing.

That's because Lesnar is like double the size.......I don't get why it's appealing to lack skill, and just be stronger.....Which I guess the appeal is more KOs and such, but that just seems like a fish mentality to watch MMA....But I guess it just depends on your level of interest.

lol seriously dont be such a condescending prick you have no clue what me or fox's interest in mma is.

Its very appealing to watch sick skill its also appealing to watch someone who is the very best at something. And the hw fighters are the very best in the world. I like to watch olympic sprinters not because of the skill they use while running but because its awesome to watch the very fastest people in the world race.

its awesome to think that if anyone in the world got in a fight with fedor to the death in just about any setting fedor would be a favorite to come out alive

hmmm im the complete opposite. i mean i love watching a few hws like fedor. but for the most part id way rather watch a 155 pound high paced action packed technical clinic than 2 heavyweights who are gonna likely be less technical, slow, and not be able to keep up anywhere near the pace of the lighter weights. even if they could body kick the little guys and break them in two.
