Hellmuth is a great player in the tournaments he plays, but the point people are trying to make about hellmuth not being the best player in the world, is that not everyone cares to play every tiny WSOP event and try to win bracelets.

There are a good number of players where if you set them across the table from hellmuth in a cash-game freezeout he would be a significant underdog in various forms of poker, but he does very well in the one form of poker that hes famous for - live tournaments.

I guess the equivalent to saying Hellmuth is the best poker player in the world, would be like saying a good drag-car racer is the best driver in the world.

Phil might be a legend, but as most legends this one is based on false information and fairy tales. He really isn't good. You can find that out by listening to good players analyzing his play. There's simply no way that a play that has bad logic behind it can be better than one with good logic. It's sort of contradicting to say that you should just trust the solid winners at the higher stakes, but it's true. And the online pros who are really good and constantly say that phil is bad actually have a good sample size to show for it. I mean, christ, internet players can put in his whole lifetime of tourneys in one month. It's not like he's got a proper sample size.

Hellmuth has 11 bracelets but bracelets mean way more now than they did back then. Back then Phil H. was playing in tournaments where there were 300-500 players per field. Nowadays there are up to 5000+ players playing in one single tournament. Thus people tend to over value his 11 bracelets nowadays.

P.S. only watch Phil videos for comedic purposes.

Hellmuth is easily the biggest name with the most over deserved fame. Atrocious and utterly horrible cash game player, average live tournament player.

I hate people who think winning braclets is a representation of skill. I would much rather award a regular at 2/4 who can grind out 50 buy ins in the span of a week than award some idiot like phil hellmuth for winning donkaments(alot of them a long as hell time ago and alot of them with way less players than WSOP events these days).

Top players in the world imo are Durrrr, Galfond, and Ivey, (cash game nl/plo that is)

I think a bunch of people posting in this thread are just badwagoning and not taking time to understand the situation. Vegetta is new to poker, and for people who don't really know much about poker world, it is not that uncommon to only know the famous TV personalities and therefore overestimate their skill. How most people in this thread don't get that is beyond me.

As far as addressing the question in the OP, I think helmuth is good at live tournaments, and that's it. On top of that, he is a really loud and obnoxious TV personality, and has made way more money away from the poker table than at it. Additionally, there is a trend among the new school internet players to harp on older generation players, and Helmuth is basically the icon of that older generation is an overrated player. As a result, he is really hated on these forums.

As far as how durrr compares to other players..he is likely at the top of the NLHE skill tree, though how great his edge is against other top players, is debatable. As far as Elky goes, don't think he is that great at cash games. Most of his success and fame came from tournaments. Pretty sure he'd a be a dog at a top-tier cash game, which is why you don't tend to see him there.
