If you do these moves at a non lethal or non injuring height it seems very unimpressive. So if they experience it in that way then its really no effort for them and thus it is nothing to write home about.

Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!

actually it's both, having balls and being retarded are not mutually exclusive. 'having balls' means doing something others would be scared or intimidated by, it doesn't mean that thing isn't pointless or stupid (and it often is). it has nothing to do with the heroic/chivalrous part you added to it.

I agree with tom tho.

Its a bit like in poker, someone who do a very bold bluff in final table of WSOP, like chris moneymake did, has BALLS.
But the dude who goes to pennies table and go all in every hands... he doesn't have "balls", hes just retarded.
To me, this video is the second case scenario.

but it's a risk-reward type of calculation, and it's unfathomable to me how the reward from doing this can rival the risk from doing this. I also think that climbing K2 is dumber than climbing mount everest.
then again, I actually think that if you've genuinely conquered your fear, then this stuff isn't nearly as dangerous as it looks. If you're in good shape then pretty much nothing here would difficult if you were doing it 1 meter above ground rather than 100.

Mostly though it's just a way of relating to russians being so badass that we sheltered westerners find it incomprehensible.

If every action was somehow calculated with cold logic then nobody would ever risk his life for anything

when someone does it for himself, because he wants to feel the adrenaline rush (or whatever reason one could have which btw nobody here can claim to know) so many people call him retarded.

Should this crazy russian mofo care what people think? No, because he should understand that people cheer for "the crazies" when it's convenient. Give this guy a gun and send him to kill or be killed for a flag and they'd call him a hero.
But no! Don't risk your life for your own pleasure ! You're making everyone uncomfortable with your non altruistic behavior!

Btw, approving of/encouraging "heroic" self sacrifice in a society isn't a sign of nobility, it just shows that you can appreciate your ass being saved by some psycho mofo who doesn't even know you. When you're praising the "heroes" (while not being one) you essentially just try to encourage such behavior for your own benefit.

This guy has huge balls, he's most probably an adrenaline junkie, there are people with worse habits out there anyway. But I'm not going to hear from people who rest behind a pc that there's nothing ballsy about flirting with death.

that's a really terrible analogy.
the dudes in the vid risk their lives, the equivalent of going all in for pennies would be if they were 2 meters above the ground doing this.
If you took your entire bankroll/life savings and gambled at the nosebleeds with it you'd be both ballsy and stupid.

Bad analogy.

This guy vs a soldier, pretty much don't have to explain this. No such thing as noble self sacrifice? So uh it's only noble when you know the people? What kind of logic is that? This guy has huge balls? Why would you praise this kind of behavior? Random, thoughtless risks that don't benefit anyone, while puts others in danger. BTW don't know if this guy is doing this for himself or not? I wonder why he posts his videos on instagram and youtube...

Just basically disagreed with everything you just said.

You didn't understand my post at all, perhaps I fucked up with the words because I :
a)certainly didn't make an analogy
b)didn't praise his behavior, which I'm not sure I even understand
c)didn't suggest that he might not be doing this for his own benefit, in fact the whole point I tried to make was based on the opposite premise. I'm just not sure why exactly he does this. Adrenaline? Fame?
d)have no idea where the "only noble if you know the person" thing you mention comes from

Ok here it goes:

People are cheering for heroic self sacrifice because they consider it +ev for society and their asses in it (they don't do it themselves ofc), but when they see someone who flirts with death for his own sake, they somehow even deny that it takes balls to do what he did.
As if you're supposed to have a universal great moral motive to do something that involves overcoming your fear
As if the only way that some action is fearless is if it's aligned with all the random values a generic forum person holds in regard

Of fucking course its fucking brave, you dont need a noble cause for something to be brave, bravery is our ability to cope with fear and those guys clearly handle it really well.

I have trouble watching this too. Madness. I have no issue with them doing it though everyone should live their life as long as you don't harm others. Not sure what is retarded about having other priorities.

I had the same feeling when I was watching 'The Walk' teaser to some extent. I think this might be the first movie I would like to watch in 3d.

My only issue is the possibility of them falling to the ground and injuring/killing someone... Although the probability of that happening is slim, it is definitely a non 0 %

In the context of most cultures in today's society, whenever someone describes another as "having big balls" it's usually a compliment and a sign of praise. I don't think anyone is questioning this guy's bravery although it can be disputed because bravery can depend on the subject's perspective, whether he even fully understands what he's doing or not. If you perceive 0% risk (being correct or incorrect is irrelevant), then bravery can not really be displayed. But hey, I think I'm starting to go too deep than this guy's video deserves. Anyways...

I think risks that get praised should be risks that display admiral qualities and/or benefits others.

Risks like the one this guy is taking should not be praised in my opinion, just because you display the absence of fear doesn't mean you deserve praise. For example people that light their crotch on fire on youtube display fearlessness but people just call them flat out retarded.

If you personally weren't trying to praise this guy I'll give you that, but when people say that this guy has big balls it just makes me sigh for humanity. People can praise whoever they want though, although this guy would have the fraction of the fame if the video was "man falls to his death while trying to walk across a ledge." If the video was something like "Man climbing up the side of a skyscraper, then I can easily give props."

Someone else could have made the comment about nobility, too lazy to go back for that one sorry if it wasn't you.

You guys are really not thinking about this very deeply. Virtually no one exists independently of others. There are always consequences to losing your life that affect other people. These people have friends, families, perhaps partners, you know? Let's find out just how honest you are about not having problems with this: would you support your own (hypothetical) kid doing it because "he's free to live his life how he wants"? Be honest. Most likely than not, what you really mean is: "as long as it doesn't affect me somehow, it's fine." Which is a poor justification for supporting anything.

fuck I should just sell some of my Pokemon cards, if no one stakes that is what I will have to do - lostaccountLast edit: 08/09/2015 14:37
