Enter the Dragon

When I was a teenager, I had basically three interests:
1) Starcraft (ever since I was 12-13)
2) Poker (since I was 17)
3) MMA (since I was 14-15, trained first time when I was 16).

Anyway, after I quit playing Sc2 professionally, I quickly found myself missing some kind of competitive outlet. A new MMA gym had opened up near me like 2-3 months prior, and I'd been going on and off... but around July last year I decided to get a lot more serious.

I'd been out with an injury for like 1-2 months and at the time I was about 90kg, 180~ cm. So I started training 5 days a week, 3~ hours a day... And yesterday I had my first fight, weighing in at around 77 kg.

I blunk

The event is hosted by Top FC which is Korea's second biggest MMA organization behind Road FC (who also has their own amateur divsion, called Central League I think), and uses the moniker "Top FC Khan Amateur League". This was its 4th iteration.

The rules are quite friendly:
- 2x 3 minute rounds
- Headgear, 14 oz gloves*, shinguards
- No heelhooks, no knees or elbows to the head but OK to the body.

Rest is the same as pro mma, but referees try to stop fights much faster if a submission is on, to avoid serious injuries in an amateur event.

* They told us last minute that from now on we'd be able to opt for MMA gloves if we wanted to but I dont think anyone did since it was a last minute change and everyone had been sparring with bigger gloves.

ONE MORE REP YOU CAN DO IT... More seriously, rules meeting

The gameplan
When I first came to this gym, I had a little bit of grappling skill, but my striking was HORRIBLE. I'm still not a really competent striker (but I'd say I'm one of the best 3 or so regular students in terms of ground grappling --- then there's obviously the coaches and a couple of higher level guys who are a bunch better too), but I've made improvements. My cardio is also excellent since I train for so long every day and I run in addition to that.

So to summarize: striking relatively poor, grappling relatively good, cardio good. I also don't have much power in my strikes, which I need to work on.

I've got really long arms and legs for my size, and since my most glaring weakness striking wise is exchanges in the pocket, the gameplan my coaches made for me was as follows:
- Stay on the outside, use a lot of circling, use your jab and kicks to maintain distance.
- When he closes, clinch!

Oh and I've got a bit of a tendency to be too timid when sparring, and walk back too much, so I've been trying to work on that, alongside a gameplan that can work around that.

The opponent
Before the fight I didn't know much about him, except that he's a striker. Oh and that he looks a lot like Reis :D
After the fight I talked to him tho and found out he's 32 (I thiiiiink, maybe 31? cant remember), been training for a similiar time to me (a little less in mma, but he's done some boxing before), and funnily enough the dude is friends with one of the guys that trains where I train (neither of us had any idea about this until we talked tho).

The Fight

The Aftermath

In case you want to watch the fight before you read this, I'll spoiler it.
+ Show Spoiler +

Various other things:
- One guy broke or separated his knee, didnt see how it happened but he had to be carried out on a stretcher. Looked reallly painful
- One of my team mates (the guy just above me in the pic below) is a beast. He looks like he's asleep in there then BOOM cracking thunder, boom submission. So relaxed haha.

About a year. I trained a little bit WAY long ago (like a month here, a month there when I was 16-18~)

Very nice. Those gloves looked like they were hard to grapple in.

Congrats on your first fight. Korea will be one of the next big MMA scenes once the UFC goes there and brings various media outlets with them.

Not that bad really, I just had absolutely nothing left in my arms. Rest of body was fine strangely enough.

Interesting. I was once interested in trying this out, but was too scared about getting injuries etc.

Btw do you think your shape is advantageous in MMA? i see that your like really slim.

I think if i were to try it out i would need to loose the bit of fat i got.

He was a little shorter than me, so its natural he can carry more muscle.

I also sort of over-cut just to be safe. I probably weighed in at 77 at the most and thats after eating breakfast before which most people probably didn't. The limit is 77.5.

My plan is to bulk a bit now that ive cut down most of my fat.

Sick stuff man, how do you go about cutting btw - what's your diet and schedule like?
do you just do fight stuff or also some running?

Your body looks pretty much what I'd like mine to be for goalkeeping - skinny muscular and flexible

Trainnig wise (all times pm):
Monday 7:30 to 8:30~45: Wrestling+striking (so, countering strikes with shots, dirty boxing in the clinch), 9:00 to 10:15~30, same
Tuesday 7:30 to 8:30~45: Boxing or kickboxing, 9:00 to 10:15~30 same
Wednesday 7:30 to 8:30~45 Wrestling, 9:00 to 10:15~30 same
Thursday Like tuesday but reverse order
Friday 7:30 to 8:30~45 MMA specific grappling/and or grapplign with strikes (can be similar to monday, but usually more ground focused), 9:00 to 10:15~30 same

Usually run Sat and Sun.

For this fight, all I did was cut out any kind of snacks that werent like an apple or something and just ate healthy stuff. Normally I just keep a pretty healthy diet but I dont calorie count or anything, then maybe once or twice a week I'll have like cake etc or something similarly unhealthy (usually when out with girlfriend).

I'm actually incredibly, incredibly inflexible! Not everywhere, just my hips... I think maybe from 10 years of sitting. I pull my right leg super easily because of this, I hope starting to do squats will help with hip mobility...

Now that my bodyfat is like, super low, I want to try to add 3-6 kg of mostly muscle (idk how much I should be adding without rendering myself unable to cut to 77 for welterweight haha, obviously I wouldnt be able to do a same day weigh-in).

your stand up fight need to improve, you should go for ground fight attempts all the time. even in those boxing gloves submissions are possible

Amateur fights are usually same day weigh in which means you can't cut that much weight.

So if you do an amateur fight at welterweight, your real weight is more similar to a professional lightweight.

For example, Gsp will dehydrate and diet down to 77 kg tfor the weigh in, then rehydrate and eat, sleep, eat more and when he enters the cage to fight he will be something like maybe 82-84 kg. Whereas I was probably around 78 maybe.

If I ever get that far, like to pro level, the plan is to bulk up to legit welterweight size.

Tbh for just a year of training you're quite good. Feels like you weren't sure what you should do in some spots as if you lack confidence, guessing you were over-thinking too much ?

I dont understand a boxing gloves MMA event, kind of kills half the possible stuff you could do w your hands...

even in those boxing gloves submissions are possible

Cmon,... You have to be 30x better than the other guy to submit him wearing boxing gloves...

I'd estimatr close to 1/3 of the matches ended in submission.

Hm I dont think I was overthinking, more like under thinking? I think everything but very basic stuff went out the window.

I think it was a good learning experience for how I should train next time, because I can see what did stick.

And the lack confidence thing is more to do with me having a tendency to be very passive. Striking is super un natural to me for some reason, but you should have seen me half a year ago, even worse haha

That's weird, you have no grab power whatsoever w boxing gloves, you d have to be forced to kind of apply pressure with your fists and use your inner part of elbows as hooks. Well i guess it doesn't affect chokes & stuff like that in some situations, but still

TianYuan    Korea (South). Apr 27 2014 21:15. Posts 6817

Hm you can actually close your grip pretty ok... Stuff like kimuras definitely work. The biggest obstacle I think is that it's much harder to get your now gigantic gloved hand into and out of positions :D

Cool stuff man, seems like if you gassed its definitely because of nerves / being stiff when not necessary, I'm sure you'll be way calmer in your next fight. You got a nice jab too.

There is a decent chance he is 30x better on the ground than a striker, so shuffling on the ground could bring us to victory here.

TianYuan your upper spine is bend forward way too much most of the time, causing you to lose proper body center of mass, so your jabs are alot less powerfull. Your legs movement is decent, you just practise more to get your legs + body spin abit more involved in your punches.

TianYuan    Korea (South). Apr 28 2014 05:08. Posts 6817

I was told I should have about a 70/30 split of weight front and back leg, but I guess I did it wrong if im bending my back ><

And ye, maybe not 30 times better on ground but striking level im near the bottom of the guys from my gym who compete, and bjj level im near the top.

Hey one last question.

When you said "I'm also gonna add some muscle for next time, I've been cutting for a long time just to get rid of all the fat, now its time to build up a bit "

Isn't it normally easier to do the opposite? bulk first, and then cut? That's what i'm currently doing (but not for mma reasons )

maybe? But I was cutting to get into the 77kg division, so it wasn't done for its own sake.

I dont know much about anything related to weight training haha
