Except that season 2 will be with totaly different characters and case.

At least thats what the producer says:

Can you tell me anything at all about season 2?

Nic Pizzolatto: Okay. This is really early, but I'll tell you (it's about) hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system.

I went through the previous pages but did not find anything specifically about the guy in the cell and the phone call. Browsing through the imdb board and reviews of the final episode, I see that many people are wondering the same things.
And yes, season 2 will be a completely new story so Baalim's post is very irrelevant.

If season 2 will include different story/characters/setting it will have to keep this YellowKing/BlackStars/Carcosa thing going imo. Too much loose ends if it doesn't and indicates sloppy writing. I mean, for a script writer it's easy to come up with a lot of weird and mysterious stuff in the screenplay, almost everybody can do that. A brilliant writer is able to take that shitstorm of mysterious clues and tie them together one by one so in the end everything makes sense to the (thinking) viewer, without making it too obvious. The Usual Supsects is the first example that pops into my head that has done this brilliantly.

True detective is about atmosphere and feelings.

Meeh the very end left me feeling the same I did when I watched LOST finale.

the yellow king is a story inside a play from 1900 which makes people go completely mad when they read it because of its horrifying truths about the world. and for some reason all of these guys in the secret cult have gone completely mad. so there is no real yellow king story, its just referenced from another story.

i dont know why so many of you are disappointed in the finale. sure they didnt get the entire cult, but the tuttle died (or was killed off) and its been 17 years. they got one of the main perpetrators which was good enough for marty and a more realistic result than pulling down an entire cult years after its done acting.

i was more mad about certain details in the finale, like for instance they find childress right after hes decided to kill his father, they chase him around a maze of a property where they could be ambushed at any moment instead of driving back to somewhere they could find cell reception and call for backup, or that they miraculously see a paint job years later and get lucky that the homeowner took the tax deduction and filled out the paperwork correctly? i just dont buy it all, but im ok with it for the purposes of the story.

think it was a great first season and wrapped up as nicely as it could. dont think season 2 will be as spectacular though, i think nic is being rushed to write a script whereas he had years to work on this.

cant believe you guys are comparing it to lost. Mig hit the nail on the head years ago in the lost thread when he condemned the writers for creating all these mysteries then solving them with some deus ex machina.

remember this?

true detective is about 2 partners who partially solved a case, one of them never fully gave up on the case because he was certain it went much deeper and after 15 years found more information leading to a high up government official and found the main killer. sure there were mysteries left unsolved, but they were never promised to be solved and they werent wrapped up in some really lame manner many seasons later.

if i ever wrote a series it would be very similar to the movie zodiac. the case my show centered around would likely go unsolved. if you guys never watched it, its really great.

Maze chase wasnt that bad, I thought so at first too, but considering the target they're chasing is fucking huge its not like he can move without making noises + Rust was cautious of traps, the ambush was the only thing that was surreal and the fact that he put a knife in his stomach and started pushing in upwards and he still survived ... gl with that. Chasing him was the only option too, Rust would've never given him the option to just run away, its not like he knows that there s no hidden exit on the other side. And if the Spaghettiman had ran away he would've practically lost 15 years of his life. Guy was a monster, but he knew how to keep a low profile

yep, but not spghettiman obv called to Jail? Or maybe he did, rape scene made by Marty`s daughter was a pointless scene right? which 9-10 year old girl on earth is playing "5 guys rape" without any influence from oustide? cheap shot, trans boy raped by group of men in the school in masks? I had to believe it was was Ledoux, and the fat guy ans spaghetti man over there? They had kids in their homes cuffed to fkin beds, meeh, ledoux was making these drugs to paralize kids for other guys, who? those who went without any harm. We got ours Marty says, of course to end up a story without further explanation, guys are givng away 15 years plus of life to catch guys, and they catched one sick bastard, but left all the reach rapists free? SO next day possibly they went again to fuck some kids. Then again exactly what guy in Jail says " rich guys playin in woods" cmon, so many things just left behind. As someone mentioned, they preapred us for nice ride, and it was until they picked up cables for fucker on a boat. Of course surroundings were great, I was in Louisiana state for 2 months, maybe that is why I loved this series so much, as I saw such places over there. Dark and great , and You can say last ep was good, but only when You did not see other 7 episodes with all tention. Also Marty and rust - that was the worst part, they had special bond thru 7 eps, Rust was just fkin with Marty, and in last ep they are like those two guys from a movie when they are fallin in love with old ladies, and their kids also fuck togehter, jack leemon is playin in this shit, do not now the title, Im done. 2 nd season will be totaly different plot, place , and actors what is most important, so no chance to get the answers for the questions we have, see ya and good night.

I would have 0 problems with the finale if they hadn't done the whole scene outside of the hospital. The actors handled it well but it was poorly written imo. Mcconaughey's character suddenly becomes an optimist that fully believes a near death metaphysical experience after a gazillion years of nihilistic anti natalism.
Earlier while they're talking inside the car "everyone always has a choice" instead of everyone being a puppet with no free will (and consciousness being an evolutionary mistake).

The light vs dark dialogue in the end - no matter how you choose to interpret it- would only bore a true anti natalist and I'm personally hoping the writer didn't mean evil vs good (in the hearts of men or whatever), because for anyone who has entertained the notion of nihilism as a personal philosophy these concepts are silly and it would require more than a bump on the head to start taking them seriously.

I mean, sure people can change etc but this felt so rushed that it's like they handed the script to someone who is clueless on everything that was going on in Rust's head and told him " finish this thing on a brighter note"

the interesting part about the light/dark analogy is that the dark is clearly winning. sure everything was dark before gravity pulled together clouds of gases that became suns which shine brightly, but the universe is expanding but the total amount of stuff is staying the same, so the temperature of the universe is asymptotically approaching absolute zero as everything moves apart in a fairly uniform manner. DARK GONNA WIN RUST

I thought the ending was good. I think most people are disappointed because the first ~5 episodes were probably the best in TV history and the build up was so incredible that people were going to be disappointed almost no matter what happened. I do agree there was a lil bit of cheesiness in the finale but I'm ok with it.

Very good ending, not great though. Needed to be ~2 more episodes long.
