We're done with this hotel job in mid april, I should have 1.6-2k saved up by then. I don't think im gonna go to the next job and I've been thinking about something.

I'm gonna take a maybe one month shot at being a live grinder. I miss the freedoms of being a poker player and i hate having my life scheduled. Playing live is really good for me because it takes away most all of the ways that I can tilt. When I tilt I don't start playing stupid, I can't do that because it goes against my ways. I merely chase my losses on HU sng or something stupid, variance rapes me, and i go busto.

From my 15-20 live sessions(NL200) I can only recall two losing sessions and I know it's a really really easy game at my local casino. My only real question is if I can make enough money to live off of + maybe still increase my br at the same time to move up stakes eventually.

I think something like 25bb/100 isn't THAT far fetched in this game and is prob attainable. IF i can pull that off I'm averaging a $1 profit per hand. I'm not sure exactly how many hands I can play per hour, but im gonna guess 30ish, so looking at a raw $30/h from that winrate. Gotta figure in tips too so prob like 25-26/h.

I also gotta spend ~20 on gas each day I go to the casino and spend a bit of money on food although I could easily skip around eating during sessions.

If/when I do this I'm gonna try the best I can to make it really scientific. I'm gonna take something with me to keep track of my stats, maybe like one of the things that an umpire uses to keep track of strikes/balls/outs. Instead I'd use it for hands played/# of hands vp$ip/pfr

What do you guys think about all of this?

I think that you need to work on your life or else you'll unfortunately become a Neilly. Still, I'd be happy to see you succeed so I vote FOR.

Have you ever wondered which hurts the most: saying something and wishing you had not, or saying nothing, and wishing you had?

you've never played live if you dont think 25ptbb/100 isnt achievable in a nl200 game.

it's like one tabling nl5 on stars where you can see their emotions.

there will seriously be no players even able to beat nl10 at these tables.

I met a guy who was a nl400 grinder on UB and i'm not sure if he was good or not cause he played sick tight but i dunno.

my winrate prob is off though

i seriously think 20bb/100 is doable though

Don't you live in Springfield? Where do you play?

Dunno about trying to live off of 1/2 live. If the games are deep, you are very good/comfortable playing live, and you are willing to put in a LOT of hours a week (I'd say 30+/week, perhaps somewhere around 50 or 60), then I'd say it's possible. So you could probably live off 1/2 in Vegas, and of course there's always a bigger game there. In Eugene, for example, the biggest game that runs every day of the week is 1/3 300 cap, and most of the players are weak/tight regulars who buy in for <100bb. Sure, they suck and a strong player has a huge edge, but you just can't win nearly as much in that game as you can against loose players with deep stacks. The other thing is, the room is only open for about 50 hours a week, which makes it harder to pull really long sessions. If such a time constraint exists where you play (i.e., if it's not in a casino that's open 24/7), it will obviously be harder to put in the hours you need to.

So in short, it just really depends on what the games/cardrooms you're playing in are like, and how profitable it is for you. Also 10 BI is playing pretty thin, even for extremely easy live games - variance hits everybody sometimes, and if you're trying to live off of that it will be tough unless you have some good sessions right from the start (which is surely possible - again, variance...).

If you have a backup plan, such that IF you should go broke in a couple weeks then you can go back to work and won't be fucked, and you just want to take shot and fuck it if you go broke, then why not? If the money is really important to you and/or you don't have a strong backup plan that will keep you afloat should variance/tilt/whatever should take its toll, then I wouldn't do it.

Anway, good luck.

do NOT tip the dealer if you're playing for a living at 1/2 live.

this is well understood and common sense. it's too much of a cut into your wr.

25pt/bb ? lol
I played live 2/5 and 5/10 as part time last summer at AC borgata and this is no where from being sustainable. Try playing more then 100 sessions and comeback. lol.

yeah good call nolan on not tipping (or tipping very lightly). also i would avoid 3/6 like the plague, and i would be at that cardroom every minute it had a NL game running

It's definatly possible, live games under 5/10 are so fucking easy it's beyond sick.
I remember 1 session I played at 200NL. Swear to god I raised EVERY hand for 27 hands straight and won 22 of them post or pre-flop. (On a side note on hand 21 I picked up AA early pos and got no action. LOL, won the blinds only) 25bb/110ptb might be just a little big over a very large sample size. 18-21 is a little more realistic in my opinion. And it lowers in probable fractions the higher the stake. (2-5 is just as if not easier than 200NL in my area, and 5-5 you start to see some decent regulars)
When eating at the casino get comps...
the umpire device to keep track of your stats is completely useless. Knowing your own VPIP in a live game has no value. Adjust to the table accordingly, and after a while you will just be able to feel a players VPIP, PFR, AG tendencies. The hands played and all that jazz? It's not important enough to calculate.

Here's my formula for note taking when I get home from a session at the casino.

MONTH / YEAR

Starting Bankroll: - $xxxxx.00 <--- bankroll at the start of the month
Updated Bankroll: - $xxxxx.00 <---- current live bankroll
Total Rake paid: - $xxxx.00 <---- hours X $/rake added up for the month
Money spent: - $xxxx.00 <---- all money spent during the month

Date: Game Played: Hours: Deviation:
Monday, Dec 16th 2-5 NL Fallsview Casino 9hrs +1240.00

Its important to keep your live bankroll seperate from anything else. Work/online whatever

To calculate rake it's about $4/hr at 1-2 $6/hr at 2-5 $8/hr at 5-5 multiply that by your hours obv

its also important to total the money you spend in a montht to better motivate yourself and manage your money better. Buy a pack of gum that day? Write it down. Got gas that day? Write it down.... bought a beer? write all that shit down when you come home. Just keep adding it into the money spent category.
Also don't tip at such low stakes, if you are tipping at 1-2? a buck minimum you are going to destroy your profits. You are tipping a SB ffs. Look at high stakes poker.... they dont tip $300 a SB... they dont tip an ante $100... they fucking tip nickels $10-$20 which is usually between a 60th or 30th of a Big blind? Get the picture?

Also when playing live it is 100x more important to have a stop loss ratio. Only bring with you what you are willing to lose, seriously. A casino is a bad place to be when on monkey tilt. Never, EVER, leave a game because you are winning too much. That's absurd at a live game, if you have a good table/seat/image sometimes the money is just given to you. Also try not to make it obvious you are a fucking grinder. Hood up, I-pod on, shades on, never saying a word, un-friendly demenor and all that shit is fucking useless in a small game like 1-2. Just try and fit in the best you can, and NEVER fucking tap the glass live? seriously, just dont do it. NH SIR works.

Anyway, that was quite a rant. Hope it helped some.
take it easy

give them nothing, but take from them.. everything.Last edit: 12/03/2008 18:36

but why would you wanna play 1/2nl as part time? I've personally never played 2/5 and below and you shouldn't either. If your capable of multitabling 50NL you realize that you can make much more playing 50NL online right?
