well damn variance got me like couple days ago on sngs... losing 5 AA preflop vs either smaller pp or AK etc etc and dropping like 13 bi or more but it wasn't because i was playing bad, just running bad. anyhow today i got most of it back and more so im happy lol gonna move up soon from 10 to 20s so hope that goes well for me
WARNING: I AM EXTREMELY DRUNK AND EPIC RAMBLE AHEAD. GETTING THINGS OFF MY CHEST. SUPER TLDR BUT IF YOU STICK WITH IT YOU MIGHT SPOT A PUN OR TWO.
I'm listening to the cure right now. I don't know why but it was what I saw first on winamp in a rush after pearl jam finished between hands. They are quite good, but what annoys me is that they are what every crap emo band wants to be what and every arty drip round hoxton square (hi londoners) wants to be. Anyway, emos are not the point of this blog, otherwise I would have to cut it short. (I'm a fucking comic genius eh). No, I'm going to slice straight through the nonsense and get to the poker...
Today didn't go well, and I must say I found it rather cutting. The worst bit about this session today was twofold: my internal morality and results. Perhaps the gods combined the two. To start with the results, I ran very very bad in pre-allin situations. Like 3 barreling to the river with a set and getting snapped by the backdoored flush draw kind of thing. That definitely constituted the majority of my losses and felt like it was getting weirdly predictable after a while. Like when you have those irrational thoughts at night that there is something in the room and your obsessive side makes you turn on the lights and look before you can settle (this isn't just me is it??). I also ran 10 buyins below allin EV which wasn't knife. I have attached the relevant graph below. All in all I was pleased that all this only resulted in a 5 buyin loss. Overall I am on the worst downswing I have ever experienced in 3 years of full time poker. It's getting very frustrating. I have experienced times before which I thought were that run of bad luck worse than anything you could ever think possible, but wow. I am not too many buyins down right now, but I expect of myself a very very high winrate since I can only be arsed to play 1/2. If one were to look through my hands of the last 4 days, there are many 400bb pots lost to 1-4 outers and things. So anyway, today's graph:
And this takes us to a lemma between the main corollaries of this post: I won't be posting any graphs or stats again. I was reading the "is liquidpoker +/-ev thread" and was forced to have some reflections about what info is relevant to give out, and what I want from poker.
I'm not feeling too sharp right now, but I'll get to the point. I can't take the immoral side of poker anymore. If I am able to live off the money I make, then others can't. I suppose this point doesn't even need to be argued. We all know that many of the fish are fucking themselves with what they lose to us pros. We absolve ourselves by saying they would lose it someone else anyway. That's not good enough for me. This money is dirty, and I am doing something wrong. I'm not perfect and there are many things I do wrong - I hold myself to very high standards. I carelessly offend people who don't get my sense of humour. I don't take enough direct action against the political wrongs being committed blatantly in front of our eyes. I don't fight this system enough. I keep pushing away girls when they get close. More of that in a minute though, I'll take a stab at that point in a second... My poker behaviour (the playing of) is something I can leave and change by...:
I am currently starting a business with a friend which fits into my (our) ideas of ethical behaviour married to realism - achieving what we can essentially. Even if it's only a blade of grass. The big motivator for that was the emptiness poker presented me with, and also that I quit smoking. I chain smoked for 15 years (I started very very early, fell in with a bad crowd yknow), and quit one year ago. I have achieved some thing in my life of which I am proud, but none so much as quitting smoking. For some it is easier than others. For me it was beyond bad. I am already considered a touch eccentric by my friends and family, but I went completely mad, very very ill. Like weird mental shit. I also got sick for 2 months and then got covered in some undiagnosed rash, head to toe for another two. My body was obviously not happy with the situation. And since then I have realised that I am not only intelligent and a quick learner, but I have willpower to do anything and if I fail with these god given gifts that I can never forgive myself. So back to, literally, business. We will start trading in a couple of weeks and then hopefully I will have an income and then I will never play poker professionally again. I will still seek out friendly HU games and keep a bankroll online for that purpose (HI OSKAR - IT WAS A GREAT GAME LETS DO IT AGAIN).
I've completely rambled but I wanted to get these things off my chest. I have no real life poker friends, and I don't talk to my friends about poker because they don't play so won't understand the very unique challenges. They also don't have the address of this blog. I am not proud of the attitude to fish here, to which I contribute.
If anyone remembers my last blog entry about the fat girl. She wasn't fat!! I was so drunk when I first met her that I had remembered wrong. She was just straight up hot! Anyway, I don't think I have time for her now, she seemed to need attention and stuff, but I think I'll text her next time im in london. Also, thanks for voting for locking her in a cage until she can climb out through the bars - that was my favourite choice.
Anyway that was just a slice of my thoughts, I wouldn't say they were exactly cutting edge.
On that note, amazing fact: Recently one of my friends and his girlfriend slept with Brian Molko!! I mean, he's bi obviously, otherwise it wouldn't be cool at all.
I'm listening to pulp's different class now so things are much better. Pulp are so cool it's amazing.
Set Mining? Psh I dig for BOATS.by MadJukes, December 25
I think poker is an evolutionary game. Obviously. 5 years ago it was filled with fishies, loose and passive, before sharks came along to gobble them up. Then higher stakes became more and more aggressive as 3-betting and 4-betting light came around. And now there's 4-bet bluffs? What??
I've decided to coin my OWN wicked cool play. I've taken set mining to a whole new level...I call it "BOAT mining".

At the flop, some people advocate raising to kick out the draws or at least make them pay to see it. No. Obviously I've only reached step one, hitting a set. But I'm not trying to set mine, I'm boating mining. So letting him chase clearly lets me chase as well because I didn't hit my hand yet.
Obviously at the turn, either vince37_m or 7NIKITA7 has the completed flush and with a $.22 call to hit 10/45 (we can assume one of them has 2 spades, meaning IF someone else has the 5s, they have a spade of some other sort that leaves me with 45 cards to draw from). So I'm getting 1:4.5 odds of hitting a boat or quads with 1 card left and I need to pay $.22 (of my $2 stack) to see it to potentially stack off.
Dude, it's all about chasing cards at NL2. Hey. Dont judge.
Didn't do this in a while, http://www.liquidpoker.net/user_pictures/e9a5a.KEKE.png
Please see above and look for stats that you have different and why would that be.
They are only basic ones, I just want to confirm that I am roughly on the right track.
Small sample, only December NL50-NL100 as my game is constantly evolving and I have watched a ton of vids end November (so winnings will be pretty much irrelevant)
Is it worth it to start looking for good river bluff spots at NL100 apart from obvious 3 barrels, or should I study more on this topic once I start taking shots at NL200?
yeah, I moved down and I'm getting raped by every nl50 fish, it feels awesome!! + Show Spoiler +

I'm done with school and I have 6 months to take poker seriously again. Deposited $50 on AP and started grinding the $5 ultra turbo 500 chip HU SNG and now taking shots at the $20s. My goal is to hit $10k from $50 before I start work as a day trader. Here's my progress so far.
Ran like shit again last night. Santa did not deliver. Maybe he's waiting till Christmas day to make my dreams come true? I hope so!
On another note, Christmas is going very well and having a great time with family. Just wish poker mirrored that and then it would be so super sweet =)
Example: How many combinations of 22 and 55 on an A25 flop?
Solution: 3x2/2 + 3x2/2 = 6
Common Low/Mid - Stakes Leaks
- Most obvious reasons why low to mid-stakes players are worse than high stakes players is that they can't read hands well.
* Less aggressive and don't fight as much for pots.
- As you become better you'll realize no one ever has anything and you should battle for more pots.
Limped pots
- Rarely do players in early position lead out.
* They check and when late position player bets, they fold and move on to other tables.
- 90% of low-stakes players do not fight for limped pots. They check-fold if they don't hit anything.
- Limped pots are the easiest in the world. No one fights for them, no one cares.
- Steal any pot which isn't coordinated or draw heavy. If you get a call and a high card falls on the turn, fire again. (People usually never limp with J,K,Q,A's
Image
- Players don't use image enough
* Especially nits
* Nits should semi bluff more often
* Also two and three barrel more (Since nits never bluff in big pots, when they do, it's hard to call them down.)
* Nits should also fold TT and JJ more often when facing aggression. (When you're a nit, everyone knows you're a nit.)
- Generally, the majority of players should treat JJ like 99 and give both same value.
* Most of the times when we get either of these hands in on the flop, we are either against sets, overpair or a draw that has atleast 40% equity.
Pot Patrole
- Next time you're in a hand and want to check back the turn with top pair, medium kicker or an overpair, BET!
- Good players peel a lot of flops, because they want to steal on later streets. But almost always they have 5-9 outs, therfor you should bet.
- Betting the turn also makes you a tougher player.
- A common thing among low to mid-stakes players is checking behind on the turn after betting the flop on an open ender or flush, because they want to see a free card.
* Like saying "I want to lose 38 out of 47 times"
- When you check behind on the turn after betting a draw heavy flop. Villain will know your range is weak, and can play well vs you.
* With a draw himslf, bet the river to move you off your hand.
* If he has a good pair, check call your bet.
- High stakes players like to bet enough on the turn so that they'll have the correct odds to call if they get check-raised all in.
* In addition, by betting, leaving small amount behind, it shows you're committed and discourages your opponent from making a play at you.
* If he does shove all in (doesn't happen often). You can call and hit your outs and tilt him.
Balancing
- The idea behind balancing is to make yourself a tougher player so people can't accurately put you on a hand.
- No point balancing when people choose to ignore it.
- In short, up to 3/6 against almost everyone, just play.
* Bet when you tihnk an opponent's range is weak (strong) and check (or fold) when you think it is strong.
- Start balancing 5/10 and higher.
Playing Out Of Position
- Poker is a game where you make money by avoiding difficult spots with marginal hands.
- Nevertheless, people still like to play hands out of position.
- The reason it sucks is because we don't have a lot of choices:
* It's hard to manage the size of the pot
* Infinitely more difficult to run a three-barrel bluff oop than in position because villain could be flatting with the nuts 3 streets.
*Harder to extract value
*Can't choose to see a free showdown on the river and we win fewer pots.
- Simple advice: Fold!!
Showdown Value
- On a T28r board we should be more inclined to showdown with AK than A5 because AK dominates more hands if it improves.
* It also has twice as many outs against top pair.
- We should bet A5 because this causes A6+ type hands to fold and we rarely improve.
Leveling
- Players try to out level themselves too much
* If he's a nit, he's got the nuts, 2nd nuts or in rare cases 3rd nuts.
Backdoor Draws
- Players don't value backdoor draws enough
* Often we'd rather have a backdoor flush draw by the turn than a one pair hand.
* The main reason is the equity we have against villain's calling range on the turn.
* Can continue putting pressure if we miss river.
* Also balances your overall game. Players will think you are a crazy aggro maniac when you are just playing your equity.
Equity Equity
- Example: 55 on a 9TT board, your equity is horrible
* KJ on a 9TT our equity is decent, and rarely drawing dead.
- We often see players C-Betting 569 with AT or KJ. You do have overcards, but will need to fire 3 barrels because whatever handscall the flop aren't going to fold the turn very often.
Not All Fishes Are Alike
- Against the overly aggressive fish, you can start to call more with marginal hands or wait for the nuts
- The loose passive are bad at extracting value and genrally play passive.
* When this type of fish bets, fold.
* Since they call a lot, make thin value bets.
* Don't bluff them.
- Against those who never fold preflop, figure out what amount they are willing to put in with rags. (5x,6x,7x,8x etc.) until they fold
* And raise the highest you can with your premium hands
- Be more inclined to bluff the passive fish who are willing to fold when scarecards appear
* Increase your river bluffing freq. vs them.
- Against fish who like to show bluffs, and is doing it again, he will do it over and over. (Don't out level yourself thinking "he showed a few bluffs a few hands ago, to get payed off on this on). They don't think like that.
Just spent the last two hours having dreams that I was in WW2 as civilian somewhere in Europe.
Kinda long and at times random, but I must say I don't think I've ever had such an intricate dream I've remembered this well. Also the fact that when I would wake up, I could fall back asleep and continue to dream about the same subject.
Started out pretty weird - I had a dream within a dream starting with being in an apartment with another couple whom somehow creates a zombie apocalypse. Then it kinda just went straight into the main dream. I was in some sort of Industrial city which was pretty shitty with a few family members. We proceeded to get onto an elevator going to the 6th floor - during which the elevator went into a free fall and we were smashed back into the floor level, everyone was fine but the elevator had again attempted to reach the 6th floor I had just pressed the emergency button and it had for one reason or another stopped.
We then all got out, no one seriously injured and was greeted by a hotel manager who insisted on us coming back and getting any suite we wanted, we agreed and said we'd be back later in a week so we could use it then. My mother and grandparents went off back home but my brother and I stayed and decided we'd hit up a local pub. I was getting ready to walk and my brother looked at my strangely and told me we'll take the train. So as we are at the tracks waiting for a train to take us deeper into town I tell my brother about my dream about a zombie apocalypse, he dismisses it and I become very worked up about this. I even get to the point of telling him it'll happen at 4:00 pm this afternoon and we should hit up a gun store and really load up as much as we can - and if I'm wrong after 4 we can just return all the stuff we had bought - still he denied. So I asked him where he had a gun, he said he had a few in his house. At that time I see a military jeep fly by us and park in a field only accross the street, men jumped up and quickly set up a mortar aiming at a large Industrial Building a block off.
Before we knew it Military was all over in the field, I turned to my brother and started to cry out something to the extent of 'THIS IS IT' We hesitantly walked closer and watched them begin to fire off shell after shell into this building until it finally collapsed, after a while of standing there in disbelief I was approached by an dubious looking infantryman. I got the immediate feeling we needed get the fuck out of that place. As my brother and I began to book our asses to his house (a mile down the road) we looked back and saw Military (OUR GUYS) go into the train station, which was followed by gunfire and blood curdling screams. We then started to hear the whizzing bullets which were being shot at us as well.
As soon as we reached my brothers house he ran to get us each a gun and some ammo. he came back and got a rifle and handed me his pistol (idk why but I was pissed I got a pistol) anyways so we are both pretty fucking scared at this point and close all the blinds, turn off all the lights and wait. Before we knew it a bright moon had arisen and we started to see soldiers storming buildings and neighboring houses. As they opened the door to the house we opened fire, two fell but three burst through the door and were running right to our location, we bust out a window and hit the ground running deeper into the residential area. We begin to notice there are fucking military everywhere and we get trapped behind an apartment building. We end up busting down a window and hop down into a room of about 4 guys lanning (lol wat) we tell them the situation and none of them seem to believe us. One of them makes a joke about how fucking crazy we are and he's going to call the cops, he walks to the window and gets a bullet right to the head. Everyone jumps up and we tell them we gotta keep moving.
We continue running through the apartment and soon are at the entrance of the complex facing a few small houses/condos. We wait for a break and book it across the street. One of the guys at the lan and I make it safely across the street before we hear gunfire. I look back and see the other two guys from the Lan party get shot as my brother also makes it across. We frantically are looking around for someplace safe and we enter the first place without the doors locked. We run in on a father and daughter who look just as scared as we are. They tell us to hide and that the father will handle this. I jump into a closet and close the door. I hear a knock and the father opens they have some sort of Random Conversation. I hear two men enter (wtf he sold us out) he runs around the place a bit then heads out.
I get out of the closet and ask them wtf is going on. He responded, "They're killing all of the jews that have brought the apocalypse our way."
Apparently I was Jewish in my dream?
So we spend at least a day hiding in this man's house. Everyday we see more and more military coming around, patrolling the streets. But they soon vanish. There are no infantry patrolling, soon a massive group of civilians begins to pool outside the house we're at, they are talking about going on the offensive before they return, everyone begins to agree. My brother and I also end up in the street where we then see two infantrymen begin to walk towards the group, I go to grab my pistol (it was inside the house)... Fuck I was done for, they began walking towards me and I could hear gunfire in the distance, the crowd scattered, there were only maybe 10-20 of us there now. As they got closer you could see them prepare to fire. BAM one of them goes down, the other one spins around and is looking directly at the father who had saved us earlier, he's holding my pistol. He goes to fire again but the pistol jams or something and he immediately puts his hands up and drops to his knees. I see the soldier walk over to him with this gun pointed at his head. In almost a slow motion cut scene I drop to the ground and grab the rifle of the fallen soldier and shoot and catch the man in the right arm. He drops his rifle and drops to the ground, which my brother picks up and finishes him off. We run back inside the house for some reason and begin to look out the windows.
Soon there were more military on the scene, looking around anad busting into a few houses, they drag people out of their homes and into the street and begin demanding they tell them where the people who murdered the men were. They cower and point to our house. The men then proceed to kill the witnesses and begin to run straight at the house. We open fire from the windows but are soon overpowered. We needed to bail, again >_<
So we run out through the backyard. We look around to a house we can go to. there is a completely pitchblack house to the left I notice and I tell them I'll check it out, I run over and there is a garage in the backyard, I enter and find two random teenage girls hunched in a corner. I tell them they'll be okay and I turn back and tell everyone to get over here. Everyone enters the garage and we begin to see the growing need to GTFO out of this place.
It's brought up that there is a river that dissects two territories about a mile away, and once we get across that border we'd be safe. We decide it's better than dying here.
So we begin to set out to the river, as we pass we see a neighbor man in a window who motions to keep going as he begins to turn off all of his lights.
We get to the river and notice there is no way any of us can just swim across it, it's too wide and the current would be too strong. But there is a part of the river which is fairly narrow only two blocks up from where we were. We run up to the long grass that the river had provided us as cover and begin to make our way towards the narrow part in the river, at first the place was pretty empty only a few patrols far away, but now we had noticed jeeps and other military vehicles coming pretty close to us. We can see the narrow part just up ahead. We must have been spotted because I started to hear that whizzing sound of bullets followed by screaming. Soon it seemed like we were cannon fodder as we were being shot from everywhere, I looked back and we had lost the father and daughter, as well as one of the teenage girls. It was only the other teenage girl, one of the guys from the LAN, my brother, and I. At this point we are swimming across the river not really giving a fuck. at one point i feel a piercing burn in my right arm in two places. I find it more and more difficult to use that arm while swimming, again I get struck as I wash up finally on the other side. The others never made it as far as I did. As I feel myself dying I cry out, "WE'RE PEOPLE!!!!!! WE'RE HUMANS!!!!!!!!" Which only seemed to get chuckles from the troops who had just killed us. Soon it faded to black and I had awoken in a room with my brother a few other people and also my mother.
From this point on I was able to wake up, fall back asleep and continue to have random WW2 dreams along the same subject line of the dream above, I seemed to know about the fact I had died in my previous dream and knew exactly the situation I was in when I would get into a new dream.
Anyways this is a lot longer than I had originally thought it would be, I'm sure I'll read this tomorrow and be like wtf is this???
Day 5 or so, (according to my Holdem Manager trial at any rate...10/15 days left ), and I'm almost at the finish line to reach the next stakes.
So a few thoughts on NL2 (.01/.02)
Today I've experimented with just calling with top pair when others bet into me. When I say top pair, I mean top pair good kicker that you are reasonably sure you have the best hand (non-drawy boards). Happily, calling while in position has induced a lot of microstakes players to get FPS, or fancy play syndrome. I've had 3 players bluff their stacks at me which I called down because the plays just made no sense whatsoever.
Also: people do not fold flush draws, no matter what pot odds they're given. So when I've been betting my top pair, good kicker (first to act) into a board with 2 suits and they call and another card of the same suit comes down, I bet and fold to their raise without thinking twice. I looked over my hand histories and calling them down with top pair when they hit their draw has been a big leak of mine.
Lastly, set mining has been hitting gold recently! Phrenik reminded me of the profitability of set mining and I've been calling any raise up to 4x bb with any pocket pair and always in multiway pots. I think of my last 20 or so pocket pairs, 3-4 have hit a set on the flop. <3. SHIP ITTT
And of course, merry Christmas everyone! I still have to go see Avatar because I heard it's the best thing since sex and I'm probably the only person who has yet to see it. (Don't ruin it for me!!)

The first two happened in the first 3 hands...last one a while later, got dealt kings twice in a row. Merry Christmas to me from stars lol?
Since I have 100BI I'm starting to take shots at 200nl. So far it's going pretty well and I'm still adjusting to the 200 dynamics. Yesterday I was still getting used to the bet sizing and mixed in some 100nl tables cause I was stupid. Today I played all 200nl tables instead
few things I noticed, shortstacks are retarded at this level, alot more preflop aggression at this level, and people are just more aggro in general and likes to bet compared to check like those damn nits on 100nl. I guess I'll need to cut down on some tables because I haven't really developed good reads or know the players of 200 as well as I know 100 where I'm just comfortable enough to know whats going on.
Anyway today ran into shitload of coolers (ran into 4 4ofkinds which is wtf)and made alot of -ev bluffs. I'm playing my retarded lag game from the get go which is stupid. I see same thing happening when I started 100nl, as I didn't really know what I was doing playing so many tables and have swingy days all around.
So it's xmas eve. The tables are always insanely juicy right now. Just wrapping up the family celebration and will be sitting down to grind in the next 30 minutes or so. For the last 5 days I've run about 1k below EV and nothing has gone my way. If I run well tonight all of that can quickly disappear. So please, one time, run good! That's all I want for Christmas.
