Thoughts on Microstakes

Day 5 or so, (according to my Holdem Manager trial at any rate...10/15 days left ), and I'm almost at the finish line to reach the next stakes.

So a few thoughts on NL2 (.01/.02)

Today I've experimented with just calling with top pair when others bet into me. When I say top pair, I mean top pair good kicker that you are reasonably sure you have the best hand (non-drawy boards). Happily, calling while in position has induced a lot of microstakes players to get FPS, or fancy play syndrome. I've had 3 players bluff their stacks at me which I called down because the plays just made no sense whatsoever.

Also: people do not fold flush draws, no matter what pot odds they're given. So when I've been betting my top pair, good kicker (first to act) into a board with 2 suits and they call and another card of the same suit comes down, I bet and fold to their raise without thinking twice. I looked over my hand histories and calling them down with top pair when they hit their draw has been a big leak of mine.

Lastly, set mining has been hitting gold recently! Phrenik reminded me of the profitability of set mining and I've been calling any raise up to 4x bb with any pocket pair and always in multiway pots. I think of my last 20 or so pocket pairs, 3-4 have hit a set on the flop. <3. SHIP ITTT

And of course, merry Christmas everyone! I still have to go see Avatar because I heard it's the best thing since sex and I'm probably the only person who has yet to see it. (Don't ruin it for me!!)

My graph up to today:

Happy Christmas! With your thinking you seem like one of those newbies who will definitely get to stakes that you can comfortably live off.

Researchers used brain scans to show that when straight men looked at pictures of women in bikinis, areas of the brain that normally light up in anticipation of using tools, like spanners and screwdrivers, were activated.

Merry Christmas to you too! And thanks for the vote of confidence haha. The transition between live poker and online poker was VERY difficult and it's so different! I'm hoping I'll be a better poker player in general as I keep improving my poker game.

I feel like my showdown graph should(/could) be higher though, especially since I'm playing a pretty tight preflop game. Any comments?

Calling too much when you're beat? It would make the redline up and blueline down..

not that i would be good enough to give any advice, but that was one of my biggest leaks, and since i worked on it, i dont have that fancy redline anymore (not as fancy as before ) but i finally have a somehow ok blueline so i think ur right

Hmm Mikeymoo I think it's my c-bets/not folding to flushes or sets when i hit top pair when I'm holding AK. At NL2 I usually assume they're calling me down with a worse kicker or their stacks sizes are so small that their over-the-top raise is usually a minraise or so and I can't fold that.

And I can't really apply this:

to microstakes... Dx

I can usually, in live cash games, put people on a hand or range of hands and I'm finding it really difficult to do the same online, especially while multitabling. Any suggestions?

I made the assumption that you were using the HUD from HEM when you said you had it, but I remember it was slightly complicated to get it working so maybe you aren't using the HUD. I suggest you set it up if you don't have it running already. I know there are players that don't use a HUD and can keep track of what kind of players are sitting at there tables, but for a beginner like me the HUD helps a lot. The stats from the HUD help immensely with hand ranges. If you look at your own VPIP, it can give you a good idea of what kinds of cards that other players with similar stats play. Then you can adjust up and down for higher and lower VPIP's. At least that's how I do it.

A tip for the HEM trial. I've been using the HEM trial for well over a month. I have the luxury of keeping my computer on 24/7 and I just haven't closed down HEM since the day it expired. I don't know if you can still start up HEM after the trial is expired but it keeps working if you never close it. I'll probably eventually buy it, but I'm not going to pay 90% of my bankroll for it just yet!

only 4xbb for setmining ? You know there's somewhat another way to chase sets : just don't fear to call any raise up to his stake / 10 (8 to be exact) Assuming your opponent is likely to get allin.
At least that's what i'm doing, except that sometimes when i know some of them isn't likely to get his entire stack in i don't call 5xbb or something unless i've good odds obv.

Feel free to correct me.

Shin-il : Yeah it was very very very good for me too. Rekrul : YOU MOTHER FUCKING FUCKING SON OF A BITCH

calling too much would only make your blue line go down, unless ur taking it away on later streets.

Hmm...I don't think this is entirely true. Not every hand you catch a set, they'll likely be willing to put it all in for you. Even supposing they have AK, if its a low board and you catch a set, I hardly think they'll shove or call a shove.

Also, I've just been finding places where the board shows major draws or full house opportunities and a light check raise usually takes the pot down if they've been betting something like top pair. Also, if I raise preflop with premium cards I usually raise 5x and a c-bet more often than not also drags the pot down.

An impressive NL2 graph. Keep up the good work.

I am a degen. Do not believe in any of my advice.
