So I know we have a few financial gurus among the regular posters here at LP. I'm wondering if any of you have done the CFA level 1 exam, and if so, if you have any preparation tips.

So far I've worked my way through 72/74 chapters, doing all the practice questions in the book as well as the ones in the Schweser study notes.

I found 2 practice exams online but haven't been able to find any more as of yet. If anyone has a source for more of these it would be greatly appreciated.

My exam is in less than 2 weeks, so its uber crunch time.

i just graduated from college (university of texas in math: actuarial option) and am now going to take some time off and play poker for a living. i think poker has come at a perfect time in my life. i started playing towards the end of college and didnt take it extremely seriously until the last year or so when i was already pretty much done with my degree, so it didnt have a chance to have a negative impact on my grades and other things. and now within the last 6-7 months ive been able to make a decent amount of money, enough to let me feel comfortable taking this risk and making this decision. my plan at the moment is to continue playing poker and use the freedom that it grants me to enjoy life while im still young and have no obligations. ill do that until poker is no longer profitable or another reason stops me from playing and then ill try to get a job and start my career. i'd imagine poker might even be interesting to mention at interviews since a lot of the concepts such as expected value, variance, risk of ruin, random variables, etc are all relevant in actuarial work and would be easy to explain to anyone in the field.

i have standard asian parents and was pretty worried about how my mom would react to my decision, especially given her bias against anything related to playing cards and gambling. she was uneasy at first but was willing to listen and i spent about 2 hours explaining to her how it was possible to have an edge, that itd be super unlikely id ever go broke, variance, my results thus far, etc and she said she trusted me so im happy about that.

i really have to thank LP for everything. this forum and its posters have been essential to my growth and improvement as a player. theres so much for a starting player to learn. you just have to actively seek it out and ask questions and take part in the discussions. so thanks for everything guys.

So started off the month switching to pokerstars and I really don't see why you guys love it so much ok it was decent but the bonus literally takes 9 times as many hands to finish as full tilt according to my calculations plus no rakeback so it doesn't make sense me? graph:

Switched back to full tilt poker using my mother's credit card (lol) and getting rakeback + bonus so literally 10% it took off ps bonus 100% ftp bonus yay plus 3 months free cardrunners and omaha manager eventually after 100 mgr...

So I am barely playing any poker these days and decided that I'll play tournaments instead of cash games because with the miniature volume of hands I'm putting in there's no way I'll make any money from cash games, but if I can win a big tournament I'm in business. Better value for the time I put in since I've been playing usually 1-3 tables and only 1-2 times a week.

Was only playing big massive MTT tournaments and kept making it into the money but busting out in the top 50 or so of thousands of people. So I decided to try some smaller SNG's and played 4 last night, won 1 and got 2nd in another. Fun stuff.

I've also completely changed my playing style compared to what it used to be. Since I'm playing less tables I'm much more focused on playing by feel than by preconveived rules, and I'm going with my gut to make reads which have been right about 95% of the time so far. Made some huge bluffs and huge calls. I think this strategy is so ideal for tournaments cause I'd usually float through a tourney around avg stack size and try to go harrington style of being an overall nit. But the problem was that once I got deep and the blinds were up it was always hard to keep my stack solid cause I wasn't making enough moves and didn't have a stack that could take much risk. this new strat had my stack fluctuating all over the place but in the long run it would grow. Pretty awesome.

Anyway it was a lot of fun. Just felt like ranting a bit about it =)

i moved house friday to be with an internet friend, we got drunk watching purepwnage then went out.... cant remember A N Y T H I N G that happened but

1) a flatmate said he went out for cigarettes and found us crawling around on the floor for 20 minutes in the street at 4am

2) i woke up with a broken foot

god fucking DAMNIT. you have no fucking idea what agony this is. CONSTANT fucking pain. i cant walk....i cant do fucking anything.

we just got back from a clinic where they gave me crutches but it takes me 10 minutes to get up the 2 flights of stairs in the apartment and i almost have a heart attack at the exertion.

i cant go to the shop coz i cant hold anything. im gonna try to do some laundry but iono how. i cant even bring a glass of water to my room.

im supposed to be getting a job and shit asap. this is so fucking terrible, i can only imagine how pissed off the flatmates/owners feel about having to deal with a cripple in their house.

before i got the crutches i had to crawl to get to the bathroom, how fucking bad is that.

dropped down to NL 5 at beginning of May to learn how to tighten up and grow some discipline. Ran way above EV the past 10 days but at least EV is still about 7 BI. Overrolled and moving back to NL 10 tomorrow with a clear head.

I've been unhappy with my lifestyle as of late and I heard a lot of good things about this workout from some friends who are all about fitness so I figured I would give it shot. Some background, I've been a lazy ass doing virtually nothing for about a year now so naturally this was probably the best idea ever.......fml. So I popped in the fitness test disc just to see where I'm at, try and get a feel for how bad of an idea this actually was. Well Shaun T answered my question very quickly for me, it was an extremely bad idea. I made it through the warm-up and 4 exercises of the fitness test before I keeled over in an effort to die. To an avail, I was to exhausted to actually die. I've come to the conclusion that I won't be starting the actual workout for a couple weeks while I attempt to do these on a daily basis until I can atleast remain on my feet for the entire fit test. Maybe I'll get my fiancee to take some pictures of me getting the Shaun T express bending me over for your entertainment. More to come.....

Game 3 Orlando @ Boston

Not sure what i want to happen. It would be cool if Orlando could win a game or 2 to tie the series and make it interesting again. But if they then lost I would prob be pretty upset. If Orlando loses tonight the series is over and there is no drawn out emotional heart crushing.
Herm, just had a random thought, who the hell is the celtics back up pg? i feel like rajon rondo never takes a break. i don't think ive seen nate play once.


poker wise i mixed in a table of nl 200 with my normal nl100 session and was really surprised that it was easier to beat than nl100. it's alot less randomly aggressive than nl100 which made it much easier. also everyone plays super nitty and it's really easy to run over them imo. i am no where close to good but holy shit it is fucking revitalizing to see for myself how bad everyone is @ nl 200 and nl 100. there has been so many people over the past few years who are much more talented than me give up or stop playing poker and have nearly convinced me as well to quit. but i'm looking at these tables and it still seems very easy. i guess fish used to chip dump back in the day. dusty was right, everyone is bad, no everyone is fucking bad, and therefore i will keep playing. i am no longer facing giants.

Previously i had a standard office chair, but this was fairly uncomfortable and my dad had a Herman Miller Aeron in the room next door to my bedroom so i kept stealing that for my poker sessions. I finally decided that i needed to buy myself a nice chair as an investment for poker. I did some pretty extensive research and it seems the Embody (The supposed Successor to the Aeron) is the most well thought out and designed chair.

Was difficult to find anywhere selling them in the UK, and even when i did i had to wait 8 weeks to have it shipped in from america. It finally arrived yesterday and already i can tell its going to be worth it. The chair is very comfortable but more importantly it "forces" you into a good sitting position. Im currently sitting completely upright with good posture and its not remotely uncomfortable, its more comfortable to sit like this than slouch even. Considering it comes with a 12 year warranty the price tag really doesnt feel that steep anymore. I think without all the extras u cud prolly get one for like $1200 or something.

The fact that the chair itself looks awesome is an added bonus!

Anyone considering a new chair id honestly advise splashing a few extra buyin's and getting an embody, especially if you are a professional grinder.
