starting again by bober1, May 25

So I just graduated college and came back home a week ago. I have about 4 months before I start grad school at UC San Diego, so I need to make as much money as I can before then. So I started playing 100nl rush poker this past week. Here the results:

http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/9996/100nlrush.jpg

Agh! Running bad and playing like an idiot too. Oh well, hopefully things start going better soon.

I did just play this gem though:

KK vs AA :( by uglymoose89, May 25

Sorry but i really need to vent. This session on pokerstars i had KK 9 times. And every single fucking time someone at the table had AA. I lost every single time except once where i caught a king on the flop. RWEOQSCNDSNF i am so angry right now. /rant

edit: lol i was tilting so bad i doubled that number. I actually had it happen 5 times. I have the hand histories.

WSOP Action Selling by PanoRaMa, May 25

PanoRaMa WSOP Schedule 2010

June 19th 12:00 Event #36: No-Limit Hold’em (4-day) 1000
June 23rd 12:00 Event #42: No-Limit Hold’em (3-day) 1500
June 26th 12:00 Event #47: No-Limit Hold’em (4-day) 1000
July 2nd 5:00 Event #56: No-Limit Hold’em (3-day) 2500
July 5th/6th 12:00 Event #57: No-Limit Hold'em Championship 10000

Total BI: 16000

Hi everyone, I'm selling action on my WSOP schedule. I will only sell it in a bundle, meaning you have to buy as a % of my schedule (and total buy ins) and not pick and choose events. However I might allow for people to specifically buy only Main Event action (but those buying the schedule have priority obviously). I'm selling at 1.1:1, which to my knowledge is slightly undercutting my value due to how soft these events are (note I'm not playing any of the more expensive tourneys that draw the better players). Here is a link to my OPR: http://www.officialpokerrankings.com/...72A9F1834667AFBB98919BF5C928.html?t=2

Some background information:
My notable cashes include placing 1st in the Fifty-fifty last year for 12k, 1st in a 23k KO gtd this year for 6k, and most recently I placed 65/4997 in FTOPS 28 in the few tournaments that I have played in recent times. Admittedly I haven't played many MTTs this year but will begin to in order to stay sharp. As far as live experience, I've placed first in a 2009 Macau Poker Cup charity event for roughly 5.5k, and have been a regular player of PokerStars Macau and PokerStars APPT tournaments beginning the middle of 2009.

Most of my expertise is in 6-max online games, where I am and have been a consistent winner. My PTR located here includes a rough detail of my results so far this year (note the dates on poker timeline). I have documented my results from the past 2 years throughout my blog so you can look through previous entries as well. I am also a regular columnist for Baller Magazine (www.ballermagazine.com) which is a print and online English magazine based in Asia, and have 6 published articles thus far.

I will be providing daily updates to my backers via e-mail (and further correspondence via aim and/or phone if needed!). The way it will work is you will pay me a % of my buy-ins (with a 10% markup, hence the 1.1:1), and I will pay you the appropriate % from my gross winnings. For example, if you buy 10% which is 1760 (16000 * .10 *1.1), and I win 20000 gross amt, I will pay you 2000 - I don't deduct anything.

If interested, please PM me or reply to this topic with your contact information and we will discuss more over AIM/MSN/or Skype. As a side note, I will be giving priority to those who buy more than 5% moreso than those who buy less than 5% (I'll probably cap it at around 40 to 60%, we'll see). Thanks!

Super Fail by DaTruf, May 24

Ok, so I fell way short of my May goals. I know that there is a week left, but it's not looking too good. What is most disappointing isn't that I didn't achieve my buy-in goal, but that I'm not even to the halfway point of my total hands played goal (100k), which reflects a lack of work ethic and dedication on my part.

Poker is a tough game. And as a small stakes player, I need to be putting in the work if I want to improve and move up. Improving and moving up doesn't just happen. There's a process (or processes) to follow in order to achieve success (big or small) in poker. I have every tool (LP, HH posting thing, HEM, etc), every opportunity (I'm not having to work or go to school right now), and I have people to help my game along the way. So no excuses. If I'm not progressing on a consistent level, then there's only one place to point my finger.

I was at around 30 buy-ins in 35k hands, but in the last 5k hands I've dropped about 10-12 buyins, which is extremely frustrating. Unfortunately, I can't even say that it's due to downswinging.

I haven't necessarily run well in 100bb+ pots, but that's fairly standard. Everyone goes through stretches where they can't seem to win a hand after the chips are in the pot, or you seem to run into the tops of peoples ranges (LOL AS IF I CAN HAND READ AND PUT PEOPLE ON RANGES). And sometimes, even though I'm ahead and lose, the loss is a direct result of putting myself in a gross spot that should have never come up.

The main problem is that I've been spewing a ton in hands under 100bbs. These pots really start to add up over time. I don't even mind that I spew in alot of spots because poor play SHOULD lead to me learning. I do mind, however, that I repeat the same mistakes over and over instead of pinpointing these leaks and trying to fix them immediately.

Enough venting. To close out this last week of May, I want to play 4k hands a day (6-8 hours) and get better at evaluating my own game because that is a huge struggle for me. It's very hard for me to figure out how to plug leaks when:
a) I sometimes can't even identify the spot in which I'm leaking money
b) When I do identify a spot, I come to the wrong conclusion on how to plug that leak

So new goals (for every month):

-4k hands a day on days where I have the time (most days) with breaks after 500 or 1k hands (haven't decided yet) to find spots where I'm leaking money and try to correct my play.
-No buyin goals. While they're nice to have, they don't affect my play. My play affects my buy ins.

It's called a grind for a reason. Success in all things revolves around the "grind". It's the process by which we achieve goals and move on to bigger and better things. Nothing in poker is handed to you. You have to earn it. So until I wake up and I've turned into Paris Hilton, which I highly doubt will be happening any time soon, I'll be on the grind.

Sorry for the long boring blog. I just needed to get some thoughts down and clear my head.

gl LP,
-JT

CFA Exam June 5th by Fraser, May 24

So I know we have a few financial gurus among the regular posters here at LP. I'm wondering if any of you have done the CFA level 1 exam, and if so, if you have any preparation tips.

So far I've worked my way through 72/74 chapters, doing all the practice questions in the book as well as the ones in the Schweser study notes.

I found 2 practice exams online but haven't been able to find any more as of yet. If anyone has a source for more of these it would be greatly appreciated.

My exam is in less than 2 weeks, so its uber crunch time.

PROFESSIONAL by joLin, May 23

i just graduated from college (university of texas in math: actuarial option) and am now going to take some time off and play poker for a living. i think poker has come at a perfect time in my life. i started playing towards the end of college and didnt take it extremely seriously until the last year or so when i was already pretty much done with my degree, so it didnt have a chance to have a negative impact on my grades and other things. and now within the last 6-7 months ive been able to make a decent amount of money, enough to let me feel comfortable taking this risk and making this decision. my plan at the moment is to continue playing poker and use the freedom that it grants me to enjoy life while im still young and have no obligations. ill do that until poker is no longer profitable or another reason stops me from playing and then ill try to get a job and start my career. i'd imagine poker might even be interesting to mention at interviews since a lot of the concepts such as expected value, variance, risk of ruin, random variables, etc are all relevant in actuarial work and would be easy to explain to anyone in the field.

i have standard asian parents and was pretty worried about how my mom would react to my decision, especially given her bias against anything related to playing cards and gambling. she was uneasy at first but was willing to listen and i spent about 2 hours explaining to her how it was possible to have an edge, that itd be super unlikely id ever go broke, variance, my results thus far, etc and she said she trusted me so im happy about that.

i really have to thank LP for everything. this forum and its posters have been essential to my growth and improvement as a player. theres so much for a starting player to learn. you just have to actively seek it out and ask questions and take part in the discussions. so thanks for everything guys.

So started off the month switching to pokerstars and I really don't see why you guys love it so much ok it was decent but the bonus literally takes 9 times as many hands to finish as full tilt according to my calculations plus no rakeback so it doesn't make sense me? graph:

ran really decent at 2nl (don't laugh) but still don't see what you guys see in it anyway

Switched back to full tilt poker using my mother's credit card (lol) and getting rakeback + bonus so literally 10% it took off ps bonus 100% ftp bonus yay plus 3 months free cardrunners and omaha manager eventually after 100 mgr...

this last surge you see is rush poker soo much fun and every hand is a theoretical vacuum to me no dynamics strangely I think I do better in this setup unfortunately

If any of you have powerpoker then please help I won 3.60 in a freeroll then was told I would not be recieveng rakeback because of other account in doyles room been playing mostly druml in this account with extremely good run hehe
