Falling behind by thewh00sel, May 15

I've been pretty lazy this month, both in blogging and in playing. I started out well with a nice little 5k upswing in the first few days, but then I stopped putting in a lot of hours. On Friday and Saturday I had a confidence-deflating couple of days. I played a few hands poorly that put me in tough river hero-call spots. I called all 3 and lost all 3. That equated to about 6k worth of river calls all going the wrong way.

I think getting myself into those call-down river hero spots has been a big leak in my game for quite some time. I just can't help myself...the feeling of scooping a big pot to a river bluff is just too satisfying. Really trying to work on it though by getting more aggressive and avoiding the passive lines that seem to creep into your game when you play too much live poker.

These annoying pots resulted in an early end to my Saturday night session, followed by Sunday and Monday off from poker to get my mind on something else. We had a relaxing Mother's day, complete with swimming and vegging out. We even watched the series finale of Desperate Housewives to cap off the day...IT WAS MOTHER'S DAY DON'T JUDGE ME. I haven't seen a ton of the episodes but I thought the ending was kind of lame...ok let me put my penis back on and get back to poker...

Today is the halfway point of the month, and I've only put in 58 hours, which puts me well off the pace of 40 hours per week. Pretty terrible, but given that the WSOP is coming up and I'm going to be grinding like a madman, I'm not going to be too hard on myself for not playing much; especially when I've been making bad/questionable decisions at the tables. It's probably best that I took a few days off.

Truthfully I don't feel much like playing today, but I think that's a function of having a couple days off to relax, and the amazing weather we've been having, so hopefully sitting down at the table will kick-start my focus. I'll need to average almost 8 hours per session if I stick to my normal schedule of taking 2 days off per week to hit the 160 hour mark for May. My current average session length is 6.9 hours...Hopefully I can pull it off.

I tried a little PLO-HU by Joe, May 15

http://i.imgur.com/z91Bn.gif

The variance was huge, in the beginning lost loads due to runbad, then got some of it back. Was fun though + won 287 EVbucks, so all is good

I played like 7 different opponents, 3 fishes and 4 regs (i guess). Felt good in all of the matches, I think I was outplaying my opponents in 5 cases, in those other two I guess it was about even. Obviously just my feeling.

I basically played just to accelerate my PLO learning process, because after 2.5 months of PLOLing 6-max I still kinda suck at it. My red line (= non-sd winnings) is terrible and so are my results from the blinds and utg. So I decided to try some HU to work on that. If you PLO guys have any tips on where to look for leaks and how to learn to fix them, please post in comments.

Joe

Day2 Newcomer comeing through by R3m3mb3rM3, May 14

Yo with those sick rhymes I start my second blog post.
My challenge is 10$ to 1000$ and writing about it. So This was my second day of hardcore poker playing, and it was nerve wrecking and a lot of hand sweating. I probably never was this happy and devastated at the same time.

I discovered a poker site which would create some graphs for me. It rated me "5 Stars Queen" in Sit & Go playing.
Thats kinda good I guess. My graphs looks quite satisfying as well.

Account was created a while back for playmoney, looks beautiful still.

Nice win streak at the end made my day, even though I feel terrible in heads up, but I sort of say myself its cause of the fucking luck. Seriously.
Me A Q suited clubs
he A Q suited heart
all in
hear heart heart FUCK YEAH YOU MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF SHIT, I BET YOU FEEL GOOD, YOUR SO GOOD MOTHERFUCKER.

However I bet I just have as much luck but don't appreciate it.
All in all I feel my graph is too spikey, almost bankrupt at one point... I might have a look into bank roll management again

I might start non Sit & Go tables again, There are too much Allin shit in Sit & Go for my taste. Anyone share their feelings about this? Maybe that would even out the spikes of my curve as well. But for that I have to work on patience too..
Anyway in the comments under my last post someone recommended me Hold'em Manager 2 trial. Downloaded it, saved my hands, imported my hands... nothing. The only thing it does is showing me the tables I'm playing on.
Any advice? (sort of off topic. I know google is my friend and stuff)
Thanks for reading and heres some German hip-hop.

Back In Black by TampaBayMat, May 14

And it feels good.

Little recap -

February: Grinded the micro MTTs and made a profit of about $1k.

March: Approached by my coach with a backing deal, unfortunately there were limited spots and they wanted people who could play on PokerStars

I think I got so excited about being backed and being able to cash out my roll that when this fell through, I wasn't in the right mind-state to play anymore. So I supposed this + putting in a lot of volume in Feb. caused me to take a break for like 3 weeks.

March 25 - May 11: Played 10, 25 and 50PLO with varied results. Bottom line was that I made another $1K. I'd logged some months of experience with PLO prior to this stint, so this wasn't a big deal.

May 12: Doing my normal PLO grind, decided to play a handful of MTTs... found myself playing really well, placed 26th in a 5r for like 40 bucks or something.

I think that my hand reading ability and my ability to range opponents spiked really high due to the recent PLO stint. I felt really... aware. Kind of a weird way to put it, but yeah.. lol.

May 13: Sunday. Played about 7 MTTs (was busy till 1pm and the selection on Carbon is poop) and played really well. FT'd (5th) the 3r for $300 and had a low level cash for $17 in a $5fo.

To wrap up this little timeline report, I'm pretty happy about getting back on the MTT grind. Hoping the time spent playing 6max PLO will continue to bode well for me in the NLHE MTTs.

*I realize this is a pretty shitty blog post. I think this one was more for my benefit than anything. Graphs (once I figure out the enigma that is HEM2) in future posts, cause I know bitches love graphs.

Starting up again and HUSNGs by hapahauli, May 13

Graduated college a couple of weeks ago, so I figured I'd start up poker again in the summer before I start law school. I was a breakeven microstakes cash player before building up a small roll on Full Tilt (Really really hoping THIS is true).

Anywho, I deposited $50 on Lock Poker a month ago and built it up to a thousand playing HUSNGs, then tilted half of it off, then built it back up again. Absolutely love the gametype and have been making a killing at the $20-30 reg/turbo speed games. I'm just too damn impatient in 6-max and full-ring games - being able to open 80-90% of my hands is much friendlier for my attention span.

For someone who has always struggled at low-stakes cash games, I'm surprised at how bad some of the midstakes HUSNG regs are. These guys are so predictable and get killed by aggressive postflop play. Against some regs, I'm opening all my hands from the button and cbetting every flop, and they'll never fight back enough.

One particular reg (name-redacted), after I valuebetted trips on the river:
+ Show Spoiler +

I still don't have an HUD or pokertracking software, so it was kinda funny to see the numbers. (btw, what do y'all recommend for software? Seems like Hold'em Manager and Poker Tracker are the big two).

I'm definitely not normally doing the above against your average player, but the guy folds probably ~80-90% of hands to double barrels and c-bets 90% --> checks --> folds to river bet if he doesn't have atleast 2nd pair.

This same reg check/raises a polarized range (very weighted towards air) and runs up some random crazy bluffs.

+ Show Spoiler +

I get good odds to call the check raise on the flop, and call the huge turn bet since he would never pot the turn with top pair with two tens on the board. I snap called the pot sized river bet to some funny results:

If you managed to get to here, thanks for reading, and I'll be posting more in the coming months.

Another new guy in the Game by R3m3mb3rM3, May 12

So my name is R3m3mb3rM3, a name you should remember.
(Im so famous everytime I log in I have to confirm I am RememberMe via checkbox)

Joke aside, as many of you I enjoy starcraft and strategy games in general, and when I heard someone got poker champion 2 years back to back I started doubting poker is just about luck.

I was always pretty good in games without much practice, which didn't keep me from practicing anyway. So now, smelling some money, I want to give poker a shot.

My plan: start with 10$ play till nothing is left or earn 1000$.
The last 5 days I started to read a lot, watch a lot and play a lot of/about poker. My first tables went horrible so I started sit & go's with a lot success. I was down to 1,50$ (close one ^^), now I'm back to 25$ and I feel a lot more confident and strategic.

As motivated I am at the moment, I doubt I will pay for Tracking software, even if it would be useful, I don't want to commit too much until I convinced myself I can make money.

So I hope you will hear from me soon and I hope you'll

Assume the position (youtube vid) by palak, May 12

really good pair of history lectures made by hbo

EDIT as per request: History lectures by Wuhl who is primarily known for being a comedian, so it's actually entertaining. The lectures are on the concept that history as we remember it is largely skewed by popular misconceptions that come from old age media sources first line is "I am going to assume the position that history is pop culture." E.g. taken more from novels by Irving and Longfellow more than it is actual events. Can be summed up by "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." Also has parts on the idea that Americans constantly elect or care about their stars "star fucking is as american as apple pie" and other things that have been in American history that have unusual origins.
