yes christians are extremely gay, but what about buddists? for all we know they enjoy the cock just as much as christians do but you are just less likely to interact with them, unlike the gay christians you are constantly in touch with. |
I don't mean "christians are gay a lot".. just used them as an example of a spiritual group.

I'm studying accounting lol?
my interests are varied but as far as this blog goes I am just stirring up some shit, I like to see what people have to say.. nothing here has to do with any kind of study.. but it'd be cool if someone reading the thread happened to have read a relevant study and wanted to share it etc..

The full blown gay people I know are pretty driven. The bisexuals seems like hippies. |

I just can't see the connection? But perhaps being gay makes you work harder overall (because you have to struggle and fight harder for acceptanse!) - thus the causal explanation is that gay people work harder, not that harder work ehtics make people gay.

seems like it. there's obv less gay people out there than there are straight people, so they have to work harder on themselves to attract |

I'm trying to find the words for what I mean here, I don't mean being gay makes you work harder nor the other way around.
Ok, for instance I randomly stumbled across this no-masturbation community: http://reddit.com/r/nofap
A lot of people in this specific reddit forum ("subreddit" decide to quit masturbating. Many of them report feeling more driven in day-to-day life and such. After orgasm, males and females, your dopamine (respnsible for a lot of things in the human brain, and very important in the brain's reward systems & reward seeking behavior) and prolactin (makes you feel "satiated" and suppresses sexual desire) levels change (for instance, prolactin levels increase after orgasm). I can't find any literature on it right now, but I read that it can effect the levels of these hormones for as many as 7 days afterwards.
Now, I know of no hard evidence specifically supporting this (and neither does that nofap subreddit), it just seems like an interesting thought.
(abstract talking about prolactin levels after orgasm http://joe.endocrinology-journals.org/content/177/1/57.short only measured it for 40min afterwards though )
Basically I tied the above thoughts in with my experiences with people who are highly motivated, smart, successful, religious, and who sometimes exhibit (what I interpret to be, or, sometimes, overt) same-sex attraction behaviors, but who are married to women or otherwise do not publicly identify with same-sex attraction.
So people who deny themselves sexual fulfillment may end up with behavioral effects from, say, not having as much of the satisfying prolactin hormone in their body. Maybe it results in higher day-to-day "drive". Many religions suppress sexuality and that effects people in all sorts of ways :o
also it is interesting that there is a prohibition of certain "unclean" meat (ie pork) in the bible, and its there because pork carried a lot of diseases and was frequently undercooked and was dangerous to eat. what were the drivers for recommendations against masturbation?
Lots of conjecture of course but food for thought. |

wat
lol some of the titles of that guy's work are pretty interesting.. doesn't seem very academically rigorous in the title but I can't investigate further atm..
also notsureiftrolling. but he seems pretty legit insofar as he is generating ideas, investigating, and probing. tho reading his wiki he has received criticism for making claims from data which doesn't support his arguments.
will investigate later, hopefully some of his papers are publicly avail.
also apparently he's received criticism for racism.. yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah
after completing the wiki article hmmm noooope I don't reckon I'm very similar to this man
also there is an entire field of research, ethnobotany, which is based on collecting and investigating indigenous people's knowledge of plants with a focus on finding medicinally useful chemical compounds.. looking through old writings and folk knowledge is a perfectly valid direction of inquiry. |

read some, skipped some.
degree - business.
sexuality - straight
girlfriend - yes
successful? heh, not yet.
This is such an extremely loaded blog question that there's no fucking way you're gonna get a solid answer. To be honest, I think you were looking for a shit-storm as opposed to any real dialogue.
THAT BEING SAID - I can understand gay people feeling a need to 'express/prove' themselves more than the average joe (us fools (well, 90%)). In all honesty, I think the problem has moreso to do with our generations lack of work-ethic. Also, especially our lack of thankfulness.
I admit it, I fall prey to both. Hugely. I've been a shit poker player/university student for years - and I'm going to mexico to soon for a family christmas.. and fuck my life, I deserve it! .... haaha.. aha... see? I'm gonna join the job market soon, at a shit-paying job... and I *feel* like I deserve better.
Guess what? I fucking don't.
It's time to join reality. Just because I raped the shit outta people at poker 4-5 years ago at poker doesn't mean shit. In fact, it's actually a bad thing.
Anyways, don't know where I'm going. But yes, I do believe your gay friends do work a bit harder in order to 'prove' themselves.
Pokers 'easy-days' are over. long and gone. it's time to get a fucking job. and hell, if you have a gay guy to your side, buy him a popsicle for christmas.
Case Solved. |

I would correlate it to oppressions. If you are part of an oppressed group (homosexuals, some religions as judaism, immigrations, even women to some point), you feel you have more to prove in order to take revenge (against society in a whole). So you are more encline to be highly motivated.
In this case, christians are for me, far to be motivated people... |

The thing about sex and hormonal changes doesn't take into account why they would choose a same-sex partner as opposed to a hetereosexual.

Yeah, it is a fuzzy connection. I talked about the masturbation hypothesis and hormone changes with sex in order to establish some evidence that sexual activity might effect behavior in other realms. Then, it gives some context for the hypotheses, "culturally sexually oppressed people may have above average motivation levels under some circumstances", or perhaps, "talentedtom is a homo ".
Obv these are not workable/testable as worded above but brainstorming is part of the process of exploring and perhaps finding a testable idea. |

Why is it not testable. I don't see why you can't work out a test design for this =)
However it's pretty good to have a working theory on why it is like you think; doing these random correlation studues and youll always find some small connection between totally random variables. But you can't explain it and it's pretty uninteresting unless you work it out more in detail. |

This has actually been proven in a study:
Christians are more likely to be happier than atheists.
Close friendships explain why religious people tend to report more life satisfaction than others.
People who go to their places of worship often tend to be happier than those who go less frequently.
Sharing any kind of bond over meaningful beliefs would probably also help boost well-being.
I would even think that possibly they feel like they have "something to live for". Not saying atheists don't, but religious people feel like they have a "boss" they have to impress. Someone else is judging them, and it's human nature to try to succeed. If they felt like they were succeeding in the religious aspect of their life, and they truly believed in the reward (heaven), then it would make them happier.
