I had to read nickel and dimed for a 'shared reading experience' with the rest of the freshman class at Mizzou. The book is definitely prone to hyperbole but if you'd ever seen an interview with the author you'd see why. She was on the Colbert Report recently being interviewed about her new book that she wrote while going through cancer treatments. Basically it came down to everyone pissing her off trying to make her think positive thoughts when she's like I HAVE FUCKING CANCER, I'm not feeling great right now. Kinda wanted to read that book but never did.

Missouri, by the way, has the highest amount of meth labs in the country. A lot of people think it's mostly a rural issue, but often meth labs are found in the suburbs. They're normally found after fumes start emanating from a house or it just blows up. It's pretty nuts. I really don't think I interact with that many people on meth though, maybe it's just the circles I run in. Along the lines of the book you mentioned is a movie called Winter's Bone. It's a really highly rated on movie on rotten tomatoes that's about how meth can ruin lives in rural areas. Haven't seen it yet but looking forward to it soon. A lot of people have said that the movie is like from another world or something then you see a Cardinals hat and it hits home that this could be a person that lives an hour away.

i saw a documentary very similar to the first book where a couple lives for 30 days on minimum wage. might have actually been a tv series on netflix, but was still pretty interesting.

I've done the minimum wage job in maine shit and I can tell you for a fact it is not possible to raise a family on minimum wage and it is extremely difficult to survive by yourself on minimum wage. I don't know a whole lot about politics or what raising minimum wage would do so I'm not going to go about preaching it happens, but I know it fucking sucks for people who have to try to make a living out of it.

Actually there have been interesting studies on this (humans fucking animals evolutionary patterns over). One example I remember off the top of my head had to do with fish too. Some fish who are hunted have a natural drive to become larger, the larger fish scare off their predators due to size. So the fish have been naturally increasing in size. Now humans have come along with nets which obviously catch the larger fish but can't catch the smaller fish since they go right through the holes in the net. This recent event is causing the fish to adapt by getting smaller. The smaller fish however are obviously more easily hunted by predators. These two conflicting environmental pressures have caused fish species to decrease much much faster then it was originally predicted they would.
