I feel fucking crushed and Im not sure why but I just need to write this out, some might find it interesting i dunno.
I started grinding 10nl with the lp promotion sometime around february last year. I ran well in the beginning and moved up pretty quickly, by the end of the summer I was grinding 200nl. There, I hit my first brick wall. Everytime I triend to move up to 400nl I got fucked so bad. I just couldnt win. After struggling for quite a few months I finally decided I was doomswitched on FTP and moved my roll to partypoker. Continuing to run bad/play bad there I finally had to drop down to 100nl for a while. I was really discuraged and couldnt understand what I was doing wrong. I discussed alot of poker with some of the regulars I played with alot on FTP. Hearing their point of view was really eyeopening and I realised I had been playing way to agressive trying to win every pot I was in. I started to change my game and all off a sudden i felt I was playing really good and running even better.
I skyrockeded on party and I just couldnt loose for the longest time. I just kept moving up and I really felt my game improve drasticly. Sometime around July I peaked my roll at 90k. I was playing mainly 5/10 and some 10/20 when the games looked good.
Then finally the shit hit the fan. I lost big on one session of 10/20 and continued to spew/run bad on 5/10. Not sure about the numbers but over the course of 2-3 weeks I lost about 40k. Depressed I cashed out everything except 15k and decided to rebuild for a while and deposit money into another site. Not happy about the other sites I tried I continued to play 2/4 on party and eventually deposited 20k back into party and grinded 3/6.
I did really well on 3/6 as I have always done. I dont have all my pokertracker hands left but I think I have a winrate of somewhere around 4-5ptbb/100 lifetime on partys 3/6. But everytime I tried to move back to 5/10 I hit the same wall I hit when trying to move to 400nl on FTP. I basicly won alot of money on 3/6 and blew it all on 5/10. Because of this my br has basicly been standing still on around 40-50k for the last months. I think i might actually be in the red lifetime on 5/10. Its pretty sick, because I can feel how much worse I am playing as soon as I move up. The frustration of continuing to stand still finally got the best of me and my 3/6 game has really taken a beating. Ive been frustrated/semitilted for so long now I have no idea how to find my way back to my A-game.
September has been horrible, and I just finished a terrible terrible session. I lost a bunch of flips and tilt is always around the corner for me these days so it doesnt take all that much to push me over the edge.
My roll has now dropped to 25k and I just hate everything about poker. I have always had some problems with easily getting thrown off my A-game but it have never gotten me to this point. Im actually fearing that I will go busto and I feel like I need to make my decision right here and right now. I either shape up and stop being a fucking whiny ungreatful tilting retard or I might aswell quit poker alltogether.
Without dicipline a pokerpla<x>yer is nothing, its simply the single most important skill for succeding in this devious game.
Im now taking a break from poker. I dont know for how long but I have a feeling that I wont wanna play for a couple of weeks. Ill just focus on school and hopefully I can find my way back to playing good poker again.
good night.

get your shit together and come back even stronger, everyone has to go through this eventually if they havent already.
talentedtom can probably help you with some positive thinking stuff, i think he's into that. there are a bunch of books out there that can help your discipline. try to use that time to read a bit even if you don't like it, there's a lot of life changing stuff in books.
by the way, i'm sorry for what you're going through I thought you were doing good at poker overall...thats pretty shocking. you're one of my inspirations when I play poker because of the way you have fearlessly moved up stakes, I could never do that but for the first time in my life I moved up stakes fast and it's in good part because of you and some other people from LP as well.
I hope during your time off you focus your energy on improving yourself instead of wasting energy on being depressed and come back a better person and poker player, gl |

Dude, you made 90k off poker, so obviously you're good at it. Maybe you should take a break and come back renewed. |

best advice i can offer:
i don't know if this applies to you, but it has helped me a lot. try not to view each hand as a win/lose situation. poker is not like chess, where our ONLY goal is to win the game. the same goes for checkers, basketball, tennis, etc...the ONLY goal in all of the common games that we know is to just win. poker is different because we are aiming to maximize
Pr (we win) * $won
try to think more about the second variable and less about the first one. i find that this reduces tilt a lot...for me, focusing on "winning this pot" has been really self-destructive in the past. but once i start realizing that losing the pot really isn't that bad when i don't lose a fuckton..........then it becomes a lot easier to deal with losing the pot. kna mean?
<3! no problem, you'll be alright with a little more optimism. bring candy with you to the poker table, in a sense...candy will just sugar coat the background and allow the results to impact you a bit less. |

after retiring and freeing myself from the stress of poker I've got a new enthusiasm for life. Poker allows you to be a young baller by giving you so much easy money, but with a smart mind there are so many oppertunities out there. I think if you put some effort into school, networking, and thinking about businesses you'll get excited about life again and not worry about poker being a source of income.
My 3-week hawaii vacation at my uncle's house allowed me to think about non-poker stuff and now that I'm back at school I'm thinking of doing poker AI and hospital database software. In the end, it's just money...can't take it to the grave with you. |

You need to learn how to lose and be comfortable with it. It seems the source of your stress and tilt is your inability to cope with loses. You really need to shut off that emotional connection to your bankroll. A bankroll is just working capital its not actual earnings. It tells you what stake to play and nothing else. You should be cashing out a % of your winnings on a daily basis and "re-investing" the rest in your bankroll. When you can afford to take a shot at a higher stake you do it, as it means more earnings. That is all. It should not be emotional or "a big deal" to lose. You make things far too stressful on yourself by having some kind of emotional concern about how much money your bankroll is. You should be enjoying the simple process of poker which is A) Playing and B) Tinkering with your game and trying to get better. Thats all this thing is SakiSaki, a game. A game with many levels/stakes which you try to learn to beat. Your bankroll is like your points in the game, it tells you what you can afford to play and take shots at, nothing else. Seeing your bankroll as real money/earnings is going to make you feel the stress of every dollar you lose and win. Thats a horrible thing for you mentally. You need to unlearn what you have learned about money when it comes to poker. The money in your BR is meaningless except for the information it gives you about what stake you are supposed to be playing at. Your earnings are what you cash-out and send to yourself on a weekly basis and that is what you can feel good about/derive satisfaction from. Having emotional feelings with regard to your bankroll and its daily/weekly/monthly fluctuations is just nuts unless you enjoy feeling like your on a crazy fucked up roller-coaster that swings up and down happy or sad with every big pot you play.
Hope this helps' best of luck mate.

Man, I am experiencing the same thing as you originally did with the move to 400NL (at FTP, no less). Every time I've taken a shot I've been beaten down pretty cruelly (-6.5k lifetime at that stake =_=) |
