Essentially, smart computer builds make sure that your CPU does not bottleneck your GPU, and your GPU does not bottleneck your CPU
Most shops are dumb about this and go overkill with the CPU with a weak GPU, but for optimal gaming performance, thats not the way to go. You want the strongest possible GPU that your CPU can support.
Btw just for fun, today i tested overwatch with 1440P resolution on max settings... graphics looked amazing but i had a whooping 8 FPS or so LOL (im still on my old laptop...)
Intel i5 6500
8 GB DDR3 RAM (1600 MHz +)
A PCIe x16 3.0 slot to install the card in.
The i5 6500 might bottleneck the card atmost 5FPS at 1920x1080 in some CPU intensive AAA tittles at Ultra Settings. However, the CPU bottleneck becomes less prominent as you start going of higher resolutions like 2560x1440.
Other than that, if you play at 1920x1080, then please don’t go for GTX 1070 as it will be an overkill. Wait for a GTX 1060 and buy that. It will still give you north of 60FPS at Ultra settings at 1080p with FXAA."
It does seem that the day i decide to ugrade my GPU, i will need to ugrade CPU too.
I've seen a couple of benchmarks which compares the fps between a 6600k stock vs OC to 4.6ghz and the difference is massive in a few games like Shadows of Mordor and GTA V (20-25+ fps) but very insignificant in other games. And the 6600k is clocked higher than the 6500, so that's possibly a ~30 fps loss in some games without much future proofing at all by going the 6500 route without OC. Seems like a suboptimal gaming build to me, but you know best how you use your PC.
Btw those 1070s from MSI usually overclock very well. Mine is at 2100mhz/9500mhz stable in the most demanding games. It's really impressive and it makes a fairly big difference in FPS.
fuck I should just sell some of my Pokemon cards, if no one stakes that is what I will have to do - lostaccount

was that at 1440p? because at 1080p, as i said in my post, it CAN make a difference. But 1440 is so demanding on the gpu, from what ive read, my i5 6500 isn't gonna bottle neck it.
Maybe in some very specific games it could happen, but my GPU bottle necking the CPU is a lot more likely to happen.
But to be honest, i did not research over clocking very much... i didn't even know u can over clock the 1070. I will have to check that out.

i have an i7 and it is overkill. Usually its at 2% usage at most. Wouldn't get one unless ur using apps that will utilize it.

Yea in 99% of cases, for gaming, modern I7 like the 6900K is total overkill unless you have like dual GTX 1080 in SLI.
But the shops always give PCs huge processors and crap GPU, because most people have no idea about computers and just look at the processor.
Even people on here advise getting I7s with a GTX 1070 even tho they are way more tech savy than general public.
Also, its funny how shops never include SSD even tho its amazing, and they give you crap case, crap PSU, crap ram. I'm so happy i decided to build my own.

remember gaming isn't the only use for high powered rigs, in particular the CPU is used in a lot of poker applications these days
I have an i7 on my laptop to keep HEM2 and notecaddy running smoothly
piosolver rig is a 12 core xeon (or 24 threads cause hyperthreading)
both have trashcans for video cards
not surprising there is a bias towards higher powered CPU on a poker forum
like if you were in a clinical trial and randomly played on 3 machines:
machine A) 100 FPS
machine B) 120 FPS
machine C) 140 FPS
would you be able to tell the difference?
would any one of these machines have a competitive advantage over another?

Ok first of all, you actually need a screen that does display 144 FPS obviously.
I personally don't have my computer yet, so i cannot really answer your question.
But, if i look at 30 FPS and 60 FPS, the difference is MASSIVE. Like not even close.
I have read on the web, and apparently, difference between 60 FPS and 144 FPS is just as massive.
But i can't really confirm that yet since i didn't get to see it yet with my own eyes. I will probably do like a small blog entry once i see it myself
And finally, YES its supposed to give a big competitive edge in First person shooters. In a game like starcraft, not so much.
Here is a video that gives an idea of how big difference is:
"144 fps is definitely worth it, because it simply makes aiming and playing the game feel smoother. But also it's worth noting that the most important thing is to have a low ping along with that."
My guess is, as you up in FPS, you get diminishing returns. My screen can go up to 165 FPS but i doubt thats necessary.
