I am wondering if I would rather be a heavyweight champ male lion or dolphin than my current human predicament?

I certainly would choose an accelerated transhuman with greater cognition and advanced SENS technology. I certainly would then choose to not procreate and influence antinatalism at a community level and upwards. Nuclear warfare or environmental disasters will probably get us before that point but if we really hustled we could save a lot of suffering. We must win the ideas war with Catholicism as well as Christianity in general. That is a pretty difficult task.

Something profound that David Benatar writes about that I never saw expressed in that way is the relationship between meaning in life and quality of life. There are certainly ways to have meanings in life terrestrially (not cosmically, the universe does not give a shit) which can positively effect quality of life. Simplified as helping people, reducing suffering, and creating works of art. We can also have quality of life with out any meaningful transcendence. The example used was a purely selfish, hedonistic jet setting millionaire. Actually I had thought about it but I have been kind of the 2 extremes. Hedonistic nihilist due to a golden rule morality that seemed to be broken in someway and meek sober alcoholic only living to help the fellow alcoholic. I would say today I have more meaning in my life than ever and the quality of life has not been higher since maybe childhood or university or a few years during poker. That is actually an interesting thought. Can anything really beat those magical years of childhood?

What I was going to say though is even though I have some humble but wonderfully transcending meanings in my life and my quality of life is relatively high compared to other points in my life and certainly to plenty of other human beings on the planet: after putting it under a David Benatar induced truth microscope my life is pretty bad and the lives of all human beings are bad. I think that is why it is so important to engage in meaningful activities. We really are all in this together and should be looking to make it suck less wherever we can. We all have gifts that can add to meaning. I think that is about all I have to say. I have just been reading "The Human Predicament" by David Benatar and was not quite ready to go to sleep and thought it might be nice to articulate some thoughts.

Meh. The premise is that it's a dietitian that comes from the future to help you with your choices. In reality, the person represented is obviously not a dietitian; most of the claims are factually wrong, e.g. "eggs have two types of cholesterol and so you should only eat the egg whites" wtf. At no point in time would a dietitian have said that. The science on the fats in eggs hasn't changed. Just the media spin on eggs changed due to corporate influence or just bad science. Even more ridiculous when he comes back about the steak and says it's bread that's bad.... that's never happened. The laziness of the video takes away from whatever substance it might have had [to make it funny]. The guy is just someone with no knowledge of nutrition who basically just reads the headlines or some blogs or whatever. I chuckled at the acting but if you find this funny because you think it's in any way accurate... facepalm

Relax. You literally saw it the minute I uploaded it, wtf. I started trying to edit it down with imgur as soon as I posted it, I had no idea it would end up being so big. Took me longer because the imgur resize function wouldn't save my new settings so I just did it in paint.

Obviously it's not "just a joke", not really. It's a humoristic way to pass a message -- to sell a certain narrative. Many people agree with the sentiment there, look at the comments. People seriously believe that this is a somewhat accurate portrayal of a dietitian, just that it's slightly exaggerated for fun. Top rated comment: "Exactly my feelings. We just don't know what food is good for us, it just keeps changing every 3-4 years and the dieticians just blabber that out. Eat what you like."

It's not triggering, it's just sad. That's exactly what the food companies want people to think. They want people to throw their hands up in the air and say "we don't know anything, nutrition science is just confusing as fuck, eat what you like" because they benefit from that. They know their marketing campaigns and the hyper-palatability of the food they sell will do the work to get you to buy it and make them money if you have no strong reason to avoid it. It's a tobacco industry tactic: confusion is the message. They don't have to deny anything, just allow people to be confused. The people behind the video clearly believe the same thing, as do most viewers who enjoy this video.

People dont think pizzas are just as healthy as a sald, the video is making a joke about dietary hysteria with things like cholesterol, gluten, red meat causing cancer etc through the years

The video has nothing to do with "diets". No one's talking about the Zone Diet, The Atkins diet, the Raw Till 4 Diet or whatever else. Those are fun to make fun of, but the video's about the science of nutrition: that's what a dietitian is, someone who is (at least in part) paid to understand the data and give evidence-based advice. Here, rather than elucidate something with humor, which they could have easily done, they chose to misrepresent what genuine nutrition experts have known and advocated for in the past few decades. As a skeptic and scientifically-minded individual, you would normally be condemning those who misportray scientific research, but your prejudice against the subject and/or your ignorance blinds you here. Like I said, this video could have been good if the person who gave the advice was playing a nutrition blogger or that annoying friend who keeps going on new diets and who knows nothing about nutrition research, but since he's playing a dietitian, someone who is rigorously trained to study food with the scientific method, it fails miserably. Also, the video's been up for more than one month and they still haven't fixed their misspelling of 'dietitian' either, which shows just how sloppy they are.

Btw, my girlfriend's aunt, whom I love, chain smokes, eats eggs/bacon/butter/beef/chicken/milk every day because she is convinced that the end message of the video you posted is correct -- the idea that it's all genetic and there's no reason to be concerned with lifestyle choices. To justify herself, she gives me the typical "I knew someone who was a health nut, never smoked, ate perfectly and exercised but she died from X disease before her time". It's difficult to see the people you love destroy themselves, especially out of ignorance. I hate knowing that I'm going to be losing her early while it could have easily been avoided if she had educated herself. That's why misinformation like this bothers me. It's not about some nerdy, abstract concern for the purity of a discipline that I study. I'm constantly witnessing the real suffering it causes to be misinformed about the impact that lifestyle choices have on the quality of life.

You sure? Watch the video Mortensen posted on this page. His channel is growing. People are so fucking confused about nutrition they'll follow the diet of a guy who eats one-year-old rotten meat for health reasons.

Wait until you've used up your reserves that you accumulated from animals and come back to us in 10 years soy boy.

'The Loco is immunized against all dangers: one may call him a scoundrel, parasite, swindler, profiteer, it all runs off him like water off a raincoat. But call him a fucking leaf and you will be astonished at how he recoils, how injured he is, how he suddenly shrinks back: “I’ve been found out.'

And when I come back in 10 years and I'm fine, you'll say "ah, you have been sneaking in some animal foods, it's impossible." or you'll say "just wait another 10 years" and you'll never be satisfied or change your mind because you literally are a true believer, like the cult members Leon Festinger studied.

Festinger and his collaborators, Henry Riecken and Stanley Schachter, examined conditions under which disconfirmation of beliefs leads to increased conviction in such beliefs in the 1956 book When Prophecy Fails. The group studied a small apocalyptic cult led by Dorothy Martin (under the pseudonym Marian Keech in the book), a suburban housewife. Martin claimed to have received messages from "the Guardians," a group of superior beings from another planet. The messages purportedly said that a flood would destroy the world on December 21, 1954. The three psychologists and several more assistants joined the group. The team observed the group firsthand for months before and after the predicted apocalypse. Many of the group members quit their jobs and disposed of their possessions in preparation for the apocalypse. When doomsday came and went, Martin claimed that the world had been spared because of the "force of Good and light" that the group members had spread throughout the world. Rather than abandoning their discredited beliefs, group members adhered to them even more strongly and began proselytizing with fervor.

But why wait for me? Please tell us what you think about this man:

I don't know you keep doing you I don't care if people are naive enough to fall for this meme but when this shit starts getting more pushed by governments I'm going to start getting pissed off. The UN is already shilling on this as part of climate change. Quite rich to call me a true believer, in what exactly? Eating the way that people have since all of history? Show me the tribe or culture or whatever that has been around for 5 generations and is vegan.

god, you've had nearly two weeks to think of a better response than that. you fall back to the naturalistic fallacy + a sv3rige propaganda video.... which we have just spent two pages mocking.

nice to see you're still consistent with choosing the advice of fat diet gurus at least.

Erm, there was definitely a shift from 'actual experts' in whether sugar or fat was the primary source of obesity? Eggs were bad when I grew up, now they've been rehabilitated. I mean sure, everyone sane agrees with the 'eat food, not too much of it, mostly plants', but I've seen shitloads of conflicting advice on smaller subjects (is breakfast important? intermittent fasting good?) from people who have their credentials in order and who seem to be acknowledged as 'knowing their stuff'.

Norway isn't like the US where this stuff is 'big food trying to confuse us into continuing bad habits' either, and as the science has improved, governmental dietary recommendations have totally tried to sway us away from red meat and onto more plant based. Our foremost experts also used to recommend lots of milk for everyone, now that's more of a it's okay to drink low fat milk. And while it seems plainly obvious to me that bacon, red meat and deepfried stuff isn't healthy, I don't have the same impression wrt to having some amount of lean meat, eggs and chicken, and aside from you, mostly every reliable source I've seen seems to recommend fish fat as totally awesome.

I mean don't get me wrong, I'm totally on board with correctly executed vegan being great. But I also don't see any reason to complicate stuff beyond say, what I read in this article https://www.theatlantic.com/health/ar...t-and-the-winner-is-real-food/284595/ , that seems on the money to me. And I'm also not seeing anywhere that 100% vegan is better than 85% plant 15% fish - just today I read that norwegian dietitians pretty unanimously agree that mackerel in tomato sauce (a staple norwegian sandwich topping) is about the healthiest thing you can eat.
