Imo the referee did his job. Hunt simply wasn't out until the ref stopped it. Yes he was exhausted, but he wasn't out.
Now you could blame the corner for not stopping it, but obviously you can guess how much boo the crowd might have gave lol. And even tho really unlikely, i don't think a come back was 100% impossible after round 3. If there was live betting, i wouldn't bet my house on Miocic (i have no house, but you get the point).
Now the problem is, this kind of match is the reason a lot of people who don't know MMA very well thinks that MMA is "a barbaric sport". I recently got my GF to watch MMA with me. She missed the main event because it was too late, and tbh i'm glad she missed it, this is the the kind of match which might possibly make her lose interest lol. |
Should have been stopped in round 3 and 4... not even close. Terrible reffing. Using your palm of your hand over your face to absorb a record amount of blows while stuck on your knees for minutes on end is not intelligently defending yourself. The notion that just because there is a small, and by small I mean microscopic chance that Hunt could feasibly recover and win has no relevancy as to whether a fight should be stopped. By your logic the fight shouldn't have been stopped at all.
That said, I fully agree that I would blame Hunt's corner just as much as the ref. There's no way he ever quits, just throw in the damn towel if the ref isn't gonna do his job.

A referee can't stop a fight at any random time just because the fight is one sided, they have to do it when a fighter is not defending intelligently anymore. Watch the round 3 again, and tell me exacty at what time the referee should have stopped it. Even thought the whole round is pretty one sided, i can't find one time where i'm thinking "Yea this should have been stopped here".
2:40 looks bad, but Hunt is actually blocking shots, and firing back some shots (if you watch properly, he is landing elbows on Miocic). In the context of this fight, it seems like a good time to stop it, but in any other fights, this would be a early stoppage for sure.
1:25 is also a time where you could argue it should have been stopped, but again, Hunt IS FIRING BACK! He isn't KO at all, and is firing back shots. He is 100% there. The ref still can't reasonably stop it.
I mean at least every 3-4 seconds, Hunt lands a shot, he is clearly still there, and blocks shot.
That being said, i do think it should have been stopped in round 3, but that wasn't the ref's job to stop it, it should have been Hunt or his corner to decide that.
This kind of fight isn't good for the sport, it makes people who say "mma is so barbaric" right. |

Well, People are right. MMA is barbaric sport and is never going to have mainstream success. |

Well, Costas Philippou odds keep getting wider and wider, gotta throw down another bet. I am absolutely baffled by this line. Apparently I'm an idiot, but an idiot that stands to make a lot of money with not much risk (risking 100, my personal max for now, to win 430). My version of a 5-unit bet. I don't see Gegard making it a grappling match, so it'll just be a much classier volume striker vs a power puncher which obviously favors the better guy but makes for an extremely live dog in my eyes. |
