The biggest event in the history of eSports begins today. With a prize pool of $10.5 million and a first place prize of $4.8 million, each member of the winning team will claim the top spots for the most money made in not just DotA but ALL of eSports!
This is the most stacked DotA tournament I've ever seen. If the last year's finals were any indication, with titans like iG, DK, NewBee, Alliance, Na`Vi, and EG all vying for the top spot, this year's tourney is sure to present some great, action-packed games and some intense BO3, BO5 series.
Even if you don't know much about DotA, this event will surely be an entertaining event to witness at the exclusive newbie stream here!
See for yourself at the main English twitch.tv stream here. Coverage begins 10 hours from now at 9am PDT with 4 teams who earned a seat to the play-in series competing for the last available slot for the 16-team playoff series. More details about the tournament structure can be found here and at our own Team Liquid DotA site here.
1. Vici Gaming 7-1
2. Team DK 6-3
3. Invictus Gaming 6-3
4. Evil Geniuses 6-3
5. Natus Vincere EU 5-3
6. Titan 5-4
7. Cloud9 5-4
8. Team Liquid 5-4
9. Newbee 5-5
10. The Alliance 4-5
11. Fnatic 4-5
12. Natus Vincere US 4-5
13. Team Empire 3-6
14. LGD Gaming 3-6
15. mousesports 2-7
16. Arrow Gaming 2-8
Vici Gaming pulling out way ahead, but they have yet to play against the top tier teams (other than Newbee, who they beat). Clearly, momentum is on their side but tomorrow, they face DK, EG, Alliance, Liquid, and C9, all teams with potential to defeat them.
The struggles of Alliance and Newbee are particularly noteworthy. One is a returning champion and the other is a remake of an old Chinese powerhouse, but both teams are hanging on for dear life at spots 9 and 10, which is the cutoff for this phase of the International. Tomorrow is a critical day for them as well---they need to secure much needed victories to gain momentum going into the final day of the round robins.
Personal picks for games to watch for each series tomorrow:
19. DK vs Vici (though Fnatic vs iG, if not a stomp by iG, should be a REALLY good game)
20. Arrow vs Fnatic (Arrow, Empire, and mouz have little hope of advancing, but Arrow can potentially take a game off of Fnatic and cement Fnatic's place in the bottom half of the standings. I was thinking of watching DK vs Titan, but the game feels like it's going to dramatically favor DK)
21. EG vs Vici (Will Vici's momentum hold out or will EG, a top tier team, finally put a stop to their fantastic 7-1 run? Also, iG vs Liquid should be fairly interesting as Liquid has been performing out of their mind vs the top tier teams)
22. Na`Vi vs Liquid (Liquid fanboyism coming through here, though it's really important for Alliance to take a game away from Vici to keep their hopes alive)
23. Na`Vi vs DK (While Na`Vi has been appearing weaker lately, this is still a good, old-fashioned East meets West confrontation, though if Alliance wins vs Vici in the previous game, I might opt to watch Alliance vs C9 instead)
24. Liquid vs Vici (Hands down the most interesting game out of the 4 in this hour)
25. Newbee vs DK (This should showcase the best of Chinese dota and give Newbee a chance to redeem themselves for their lackluster run so far by beating DK, a feat they've accomplished several times before. C9 vs iG should also be a great match to watch, if Newbee somehow fucks up vs Na`Vi.NA and Arrow Gaming, I'm dumping them for the C9 game 100%)
26. EG vs Na`Vi.NA (The best of North America clashes here. While Na`Vi.NA's record isn't that great, they did take a game off of iG, so they are clearly still a potential threat take a game off of even the best of the best. Liquid vs Alliance would be my second choice)
27. Vici vs C9 (I feel like I haven't given C9 enough love. They run some unconventional lineups/strategies and the individual players have so much color and skill that they almost always deserve a mention. Honestly though, this series is really tough to decide without watching the games leading up to it. I could definitely watch iG vs Na`Vi or Liquid vs Titan instead. Hell, if Liquid starts winning their first two games, I might just end up watching every single game by Liquid this day)
1. Vici Gaming 12-3 advances to main event
2. Evil Geniuses 11-4 advances to main event
3. Team DK 10-5 advances to phase three
4. Invictus Gaming 9-6 advances to phase three
5. Cloud 9 8-7 advances to phase three
5. Team Liquid 8-7 advances to phase three
5. Natus Vincere 8-7 advances to phase three
5. Titan 8-7 advances to phase three
9. Newbee 7-8 3 way tiebreaker, advances to phase three
9. LGD Gaming 7-8 3 way tiebreaker, advances to phase three 9. Mousesports 7-83 way tiebreaker, eliminated 12. Fnatic 6-9 12. Alliance 6-9 12. Team Empire 6-9 15. Na'Vi North America 5-10 16. Arrow Gaming 2-13

From what I've seen, the Chinese teams have been drafting better lanes and ganking setups, with overall better skirmish executions.
But Alliance still boasts the ability to pull out perfect teamfights after being 20k gold/exp behind that leads to an all in base push and an unparalleled rat dota strategy so you can never count them out of the running.

why the resurgence of tidehunter do you think? bkbs even more crucial in these 5 man line up meta nO?
He received huge buffs for anchor smash in 6.81, allowing bigger damage reduction and making it work vs. ancient creeps (8x ancient stacks nom nom nom). In 6.80 his kraken shell dmg block was increased and debuff removal threshold was also lowered. Blink manacost was removed, and the creep wave equilibrium was rebalanced in favor of the offlane.
Now he's pretty much unkillable and gets his core items and level up so fast that he's almost always worth considering for a ban or a pick now.

dota is most definitely an enjoyable thing to watch. You're gonna have to spend quite a few hours playing (maybe over 1000?) To really enjoy and understand the intricacies of what's going on though.

Like any other great game, there are multiple layers that add complexity to this game -- knowledge of the game (107 heroes in dota 2 so far, each with 4 unique abilities, plus 130 unique items), hero/item micro, item/skill build selection, drafting, individual/team coordination, game sense (map awareness, timing, predicting opponents movement), and a whole host of other things. I guess it's like playing WC3 exclusively with heroes, but then 9 other players join you with heroes of their own and things get way more challenging and fun.
I guess the best way to enjoy the game is to learn some of the abilities that individual heroes have and the items that can be used at the liquid dota wiki here.
Plus this time around the broadcasters set up a newbie channel that tries to explain all the basic things so that might be a good way to start watching dota.

compared to war3, remove all normal units, multiple hero by 5, multiply item builds possibilities by 20, remove all macro, remove the issue of "timing" for any player w >90 IQ
still though the game is somewhat fun to watch

Check out the newcomer stream which will help you a lot. http://www.twitch.tv/dota2ti_noob If you come from a competitive background then maybe some of the stuff on this stream might seem a little basic, but bare in mind, dota is a very complex game. Just understanding what certain heroes do will increase your viewing pleasure massively. Highly recommend watching newcomer stream. Its a fantastic idea and it has got alot of positive feedback.
Final is gonna be so fucking sick though. Winners taking $5mil. Its crazy.
Also when you play this game for so long, what seems like a very simple game (only control 1 hero, how hard can it be??) is actually very deep and layered upon layer of complexity. So you do watch games and go, wow holy shit, he just did this and that. amazing play etc.

Can't think of one but it's a heavy nuker with an imba 6s silence that also amplifies magic damage to a single target by 45%. So kind of like a lina on steroids minus the stun and autoattack damage?
Skywrath ult does 1400 dmg at lvl 3 in a radius split between heroes in the aoe, so it comboes really well with heroes that lock targets down like clockwerk or enigma. With the silence applied that's almost 2k magic dmg on a single target on a 20s cooldown that drops to 0 when you get an aghs on that hero. Costs 800 mana though =D

TL;DR Era has severe anxiety issues and was throwing up and stuff during episodes while traveling with the team. He was subbed in by Excalibur for a few tourneys. Era then asks Valve if the team is even allowed to replace him for TI4 and Valve says no. Fnatic of course doesn't want to risk their success at the biggest tourney of the year, as well as Era's health, by traveling and competing with him.
Valve wins in the end and Era plays for TI4, apparently doing alright so far.
No hard feelings between the parties, just a shitty situation for everyone involved.

Well considering LoL is based off Dota there is no surprises there in your statement. Each to their own. I prefer Dota because it is much more immersive and complex than LoL. The graphics, the sounds and the gameplay all add up to a great experience for me, where LoL doesnt do that for me. Each to their own. I am sure anyone here could write an essay on the differences and countless people have in the past.
Original creators of DotA left it to Icefrog and created LoL. I haven't played Dota 2 tbh, but i've played tons of the wc3 one and I could say both games are very different, although they're both MOBA. You cant really say which one is more complex, since there are different factors, its like playing NLHE and PLHE tbh

Given how things have been going in TI4 so far, it's hard to say, so many teams that are expected to stomp are getting stomped, and vice versa. But I have little love for Excalibur though. He's too inexperienced and makes a lot crucial mistakes mid to lategame. Plus, it seems he has little leeway outside of the handful of heroes he can play. Era is way better for fnatic imo.

damn, crazy stuff. rooting pretty hard for fnatic and era. gogo hontrash.
but honestly lets be real, if fnatic ever wanna be serious about winning, n0tail has to play mid.
TobiWan needs to get checked for anxiety issues afaik, he gets annoying when one team pulls ahead by much.
I like fnatic especially Toenail and H4nni. Rooting for lots of teams/players. Such a spectator friendly event aswell, nice to be able to spec ingame and switch between games & casters. Also drewamleague, compendium etc make it more fun for lots of people i guess.
Some sweet games. Skywrath is fun to watch.

from the ones i watched best one so far was fnatic vs. mouz
and the most impressive performance by a player was VG fy earthshaker vs.
fnatic, especially considerering it wasn't a snowball solo mid shaker like qojqva vs. fnatic
it's easy to perform well when you are snowballing, but fy played godly sup shaker

both games are free, but in Dota you can pick any hero in the game since your first match. in LoL you need to grind or buy the heroes you can pick.
in LoL there is also a rune and talent system that benefects people as they level up their account. there isn't anything like that in Dota.
I prefer Dota due to the graphics and gameplay. I found Dota to be so much better... its personal taste I guess.
about the complexity of LoL, I remember I had the impression that Dota was more complex, but I don't even remember why, so I can't give an opinion on that...

She is popular because she is a very versatile hero. You can pick her early in draft and can basically put her in any position or lane. She can be a hard carry, solo mid, support, offlane. Anything can work. So it makes your draft flexible. Her ult is very strong as well esp at high level. Forces opponents to spend gold on sentries to prevent her ult gangs etc. Its a psychological advantage too, having to always think about her invis ulti.

i dunno man, i'm a huge n0tail fan as well since hon and before this TI i also thought h4nn1 wasn't on the same level (i think Fly isn't as well)
but after this TI i felt h4nn1 played really good, Era and Trixi did ok and the ones that played bad were n0tail and Fly

iono man, i used to watch era stream in hon first person for like hours. i watched like 10 games in person for his dota2 performance and it really seemed like he was half the player he was in hon. he wasn't checking the map as actively as he used to, and it felt like they gave n0tail a lot of different heroes that he wasn't expecting to compensate for the team issues i guess. or maybe they had n0tail mid LD, alchemist as a plan all along. btw i forget which one but either zai or ppd played with era on FIRE if i recall correctly.
there are so many death ball compositions without a traditional "carry" and with razer who feels more like an "anti carry". just static link the enemy carry and all the sudden its like dooming the enemy carry and having yours output tons of dmg. surround with enigma ult or other various cc like levi ult or brewmaster ftw.
that last fnatic game, i was yelling and banging on my desk everytime they landed a pudge hook lmao. my roommate came in and was like yea u watching the world cup bro?

Hope that fnatic stays together and turns shit around for next year, really unfortunate situation for them leading up to the biggest tournament of the year. Will also be interesting since BigDaddy said that Fly wants to play carry, and Xcalibur is lurking

scrims are for trying new strats out.. so take them with a grain of salt. The format is legit but its not as good as bo3 and alliance easily coulda made a deep run if they made it past round robin.. its just that the teams are so close this year and alliance lost too many games the first day. A lot of the games in the groups coulda gone either way and A is no exception, just watch their last match against the favorites eg. Having said that yea loda made some questionable plays not getting bkb etc.
I am hoping to see na'vi in the GF in standard ti fashion.

omnislash gets strong with attack speed, especially with already having the fastest BAT in the game (aside from ult'd alchemist) and a built in crit
healing ward is insanely strong for pushing and can be a nuisance for the other team during team fights
spin is super good early game and late game for magic immunity (and also as a semi counter to stupid phoenix)
only flaw is his lack of mobility and his kinda low stats (and you always get aghs anyway so whatever)
ninja edit - he just doesn't have a spot in the meta ATM so he's rarely picked up

so to summarize, you guys love a healing support that helps extend pushes, and this is enough in certain lineups to warrant jugg as a pickup?
pretty much 2 teams picked him DK and Fnatic iirc, but i just remember thinking from experience, that Jugg does alot of things ok, but none too well and remember just hoping he wouldn't have to carry (and he never had to)

dk only lost cause EG played 99.99% perfect. the list of teams to beat dk in that game is just 1.
like if your any other team, looking in, i feel like your both motivated and crushed. motivated because you can see where you can potentially take your game, but completely crushed because you're thinking "holy shit how many 100 hour weeks i gotta put in, to catch up to DK and EG"

I meant going crazy over/applauding very easy to pull of moves. I love the energy they have. Most of the Dota casters are amazing. I'm just glad Godz isn't casting though. He's an 'I mean' 'buuuut' cannon. Fires those out every second sentence. The only caster I thoroughly dislike in DotA is Ayesee. I don't even play the game and he gets so much stuff wrong. Glad he's also not casting. Tobiwan #1 anyway.
Fwiw, I never watched BW with Korean commentary. Korean annoys the fuck out of me. Also didn't care that much about Korean BW pro-gaming. Only in SC2 I started watching it because of English commentary mostly (even though in SC2 you have had or still have casters like Moletrap, Kellymilkies and Khaldor who are all absolutely horrific at casting).

this is from before the tournament actually started. I don't follow the dota scene at all except for the international so I usually come in to the tournaments with a decent clue on who is likely to win the tournament. Why was Newbee seen as one of the favorites prior to TI4? I checked them on liquipedia and it seems they didn't play/win a lot of tournaments. I assume it's because all their players are sick (only know xiao8)? Also what happened to NaVi after April 2014? They seem to be on a slump.
In this finals Vici Gaming are seen as the underdog right?

Having USA or Europe win would have been better for the scene imho.. its just the truth. You need socially accepted nerds not full on asian nerds no offense.
It's just compared to last year's final with Na'Vi against Alliance, this finale looked like some $3k tourney finale or whatever. When even Tobi and Lumi can't hype it up, then you've got a terrible final.
Last year's final was absolutely terrific. I was rooting for Na'Vi but in the end I didn't care much who won because those finals were just that good.

I remember when i was trashing battlenet/Garena with my brother playing WC3. We actually went to the world cyber games on a stipend and got top 5 USA on LAN.
But all the shitty kids who couldn't play the real game went and started playing nothing but DOTA in the custom game section and the game fell off. What a gay game DOTA is and all of the knock offs similar to it. DOTA wasn't even one of the better custom games out there. Footmen wars and a lot of tower defense games > dota.
Do not understand the point of this game really at all; farm creeps and have lame fights controlling one unit. No macro required. Hardly any micro. Weak strategies. Just a dumbed down version of better games; but of course that is also why it is popular.

cool, so, how would you counter newbee strategies? which heroes to ban and pick agaisnt them? and what build would you use for each hero?
no macro required? so, we don't need to farm gold? it's all about lame fights in the middle? wtf you're such a badass! you solved the game and developed a new meta!
how long did it take for you to get such a deep understanding of a game with more than 100 heroes and 50+ items? that's just absurd!

EE clinkz style is a pub build though. you just get soul ring + blink and go around ratting the whole game. EE is the ultimate 7k tryhard pubber but can't carry in real games because he doesn't know how to differentiate from pubs and tourneys.
